Kanye West Keeps It Real Like Pinocchio

Posted Mon Nov 24, 2008 8:59pm PST by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Someone just asked me what I thought of Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak and it was hard for me to answer.

Last month I blogged that I liked the album's first single "Love Lockdown" but could not get past the fact that the outspoken rap star could not sing. I even joked that "Love Lockdown" was cool, but that Kanye should stick to rapping and absolutely not release an R&B album. Two days later, I found out that 808s & Heartbreak mainly featured Kanye singing, as opposed to rapping.

808s & Heartbreak isn't so much an R&B album as much as it just features Kanye West singing on the majority of the songs. A lot of rappers sing their way through their rhymes-Nelly, Snoop, will.i.am-so this isn't the first time a rapper has tried this. However, it has to be among the first times that a rapper has released an entire singing album.

Though Kanye's singing talent is suspect, his production is still among the best. The music is consistently good throughout the album, and Kanye tries keep his singing in safest ranges possible. He mainly sings in low tones as he does on singles "Love Lockdown" and "Heartless" and rarely ventures outside of those areas. When he stays in line, the singing is bearable, enhanced by the production and catchy melodies. But when he pushes it too far, it's a painful listen.

What saves the record is its inspiration. Called 808s & Heartbreak, the lyrical content dwells on his various pains. On "Welcome To Heartbreak" he sings about his desires to have a family. "Bad News" tells the story of getting the news of his mother's untimely passing. "Amazing" featuring Young Jeezy informs a detractor that no matter how hard they try to discourage him, he will prevail. The rest of the album is focused on girl problems.

Singing about these topics over pulsating ballads gives the songs additional introspective layers that he would not have conveyed had he rapped them.

I give him credit for having enough artistic licenses to step outside of the box to push himself to try a different style.

There is only one song that ruins the vibe. It's the final track, "Pinocchio Story," a freestyle song recorded live in Singapore. In attempt to justify his penchant for complaining at award shows, fighting with the paparazzi and press, Kanye argues that he's just being honest like Pinocchio. Yes, Pinocchio, the fairytale about the wooden puppet-turned-real boy whose nose grew whenever he told a lie. Not only is this a weird, unlikely metaphor, the song is horrible. They should have left it off the album. But maybe it's included to illustrate the type of creative energy that motivated him to travel down this lane in the first place.

I have mixed feelings about the new sound delivered by Mr. West. I clearly think this is an attempt to make the lyrical content of music more popular to the masses. I think it’s a clear example of being influence by your peers. Mr. West associations with Common, Bentley, Andre 3000, John Legend and others shows a group of individuals that are broadening the scope of hip-hop and may in essence be creating their own unique genre of music. The creativity by Mr. West and others show that labels are not always able to classify the art form of making GOOD Music, which happens to be the name of Mr. West’s record label. I have no idea if the album will be a commercial success; because innovators are rarely appreciated during their own lifetime. So I would suggest buying the album although it may simply not be one for the heavy rotation in your iPod.

Billy,
In one half of your article you commend Kanye for pushing the envelope into the seldom dwelled 'singing rappers' territory but at the end you condemn the song that pushes it the most (featuring little production, and singing from end to end). Pinocchio story has very little to do with justifying any previous action but more to vent about the consequences of his fame (his mothers death, etc. "i just want to be a real boy"). I think you should listen to it again, it'll sink in when you listen to the words.

p.s. i usually dislike people who point out things that really don't matter but i cringed a few times during this article because of it (grammar) so I have to do it. Why are you missing full words in your review of such a high profile entertainer's album ("Kanye tries keep")?

i am a big kanye fan however this is a subpar c.d. from him i love the creativity however this is not his strong suit and i cant wait until he comes out with a new rap c.d. because there are very few tracks from this c.d. that i will be playing

"...little crumbs from leftover blueberry pies..."? HahahahahaaahHAHA!

Starzzbabii, that is the most classic diss to hater today. You need to be rapping & writing your own column.

And KevelnLamar20, word. Don't hate, congradulate & elevate. Learn from Kanye's drive, focus & risk-taking. I'm buying it today without hearing the whole album because at least West will give you something creative & challenging.

1st blogger is a hater!! Go back and listen to Usher Biotch! Heartless has a nice bass line. Nice Groove!

He sucks and has zero talent. Try playing instruments, you ignorant clown. Find out that making music is more than pressing a few buttons and blinking a few lights. His singing (if that's what you call it) absolutely sucks. Also, bass is for timing, not lead. I wish you idiots would get that.

This is an excellent album. His words are remarkable. You really have to feel what he is saying.........He is very gifted......enjoy the fruits of his labor. "Just be glad your a real boy/girl"

I respect Kanye's attempt to be different hip hop needs it, but damn this is hot garbage. It sounded like he just got a divorce from his wife and just said damn i need to make an album to pay alimony. Im heartbroke that i paid money for this and didnt get the bootleg!
I should make an album now.

I can't believe Kanye was serious when making this album. Why is he trying to sing? The singing sounds absolutely terrible and what makes it even worse is he distorts his voice when trying to sing on this album. He really needs to stick to producing. It doesn't even sound like real singing. And I love how he thinks he's the voice of our generation and a great rapper he is so overrated it makes me sick. I could name 10 rappers who blow him out of the water. His new stuff just doesn't sound raw at all and I'm disappointed. STICK TO PRODUCING KANYE.

16. thaichick -

I don't care what nobody on this blog says! THE NUMBERS SPEAK THE TRUTH! This album will be #1 on the charts! Just wait and see. This album is definately lyrical. The things he says is mind-blowing! Nobody can match his creativity. Kanye is a genius! I've been listening to this ablumn consistently since I bought it yesterday. I even had it on while I was sleeping.

18. indikia -
Now honestly people why hate on Mr. West??? 808’s and Heartbreaks is album that Kanye put together to share his emotion with the world. This album is something different and people need to close their mouth and open their ears and listen to the words that are common from kanye. This album by far is going to be great.

19. Fred -
Kanye West is not the voice of MY generation (18-30). That honor belongs to The Who, who are the voice of every generation

20. AnthonyN -
this is GOOD music. everyone cries about how they want the old kanye and when he releases his next album, people will be wishing for the "old 808" sound. props to Kanye, 4 straight critically-acclaimed albums! that's pretty much unheard of.
