Etta James Disses Beyonce's Inauguration Performance

Posted Thu Feb 5, 2009 12:42pm PST by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

It's safe to assume that Beyonce's portrayal of Etta James in the retro film Cadillac Records did not impress the legendary soul singer.

The 71-year-old pioneer, who rose to fame in 1950s, recently made it clear that she was not a fan of the self-proclaimed diva whose third solo album I Am...Sasha Fierce is the #3 album in the country.

Before performing "At Last" at Seattle's Paramount Theatre last Wednesday, James complained about Beyonce singing the song for President Obama and wife Michelle's first dance at the Neighborhood Ball.

"You know that woman he had singing for him, singing my song, she's going to get her a-- whipped," Etta said to a thunderous applause. She went on to add that she could not "stand" Beyonce.

Some dismiss James' anger as jealously, saying that she is only upset because she was not invited to perform the song herself.

However, James' anger warrants the asking of a few key questions:

Did anyone from Obama or Beyonce's camps contact James beforehand to seek her blessing?

Since Etta is not credited as a songwriter for "At Last," she technically does not have the authority to approve who sings the song. However, considering the significance of the song being performed at the inauguration ball for the first African American president and furthermore the song being used for the president's first dance with the first lady, consulting James beforehand would have been the honorable thing to do. I know that appropriate clearances were already in place for Beyonce to perform the song for the promotion of Cadillac Records, but the inauguration is a historical, not promotional, event.

Additionally, based on James' rant, she is not a fan of the president either. When addressing the Seattle crowd, she referred to Obama as "your president...the one with the big ears," and added, "he's not my president."

Was James even considered to sing or even invited to the inauguration?

Let's be honest, would the inauguration committee have asked Beyonce to sing an Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross or Tina Turner song in lieu of having their involvement? We all know the answer to that question. Since Etta has said that she is not a supporter of Obama, had she received an invite or not, maybe she would not have attended. To take it a step further, if Etta had made it clear that she did not want any ties to Obama, why then would they use her staple song to celebrate his first day of presidency?

Ironically, the day following Beyonce's January 20 performance, James' son Donto James was quoted in the New York Daily News saying that his mother loved the rendition. "She thought it was great," Donto said. "She's gotten emotional, just like everybody else."

This isn't the first time Beyonce has caught flack from one of her predecessors. Almost exactly one year ago, I blogged about a tongue lashing Beyonce received from Aretha Franklin. The Queen Of Soul was upset with Beyonce for referring to Tina Turner as "the Queen" during an introduction at last year's Grammys.

In this instance, I sided with Beyonce. I agree that Aretha is the sole Queen Of Soul, but also acknowledge that Tina Turner, too, is a queen.

In the case of Etta James, I take Etta's side. Though her reaction is crass for someone of her stature, I feel that she was robbed of a moment in history. Considering her struggles to break into the music business in the 1950s and ability to prevail with such great success (she was inducted in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993), she should have had the opportunity to sing the song (that she popularized) for the president.

If "At Last" had not been significant and did not express the message that the inauguration committee wanted to convey, they would have selected another song. But they wanted "At Last."

I bet Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" wasn't even up for discussion.

A representative for Beyonce said that the singer does not have a statement or comment at this time.

i think beyonce did a great job, and its sad that this is what we are focusing in, and Etta really needs to get over it.

LOL... you act like people can't have an opinion. Truth is, Beyonce could be sued for copyright infringement and should be.
I love James' feistiness though. Her opinion on Obamba is funny.

etta james is just mad cause she isnt relevant anymore.

44. Danielle -
Is she suffering from dementia?

I do not normally leave comments on these stories but I had to on this one. You have a history making event. The first African American president. You have the chance to get the one and only Etta James to sing to sing for this event and you choose some wet behind the ears girl who did not travel the road that Etta did. Etta is part of the people who made it possible for us to even have a president named Obama. When in this country did we forget where we come from and who led the trip to get here. Who ever put the parties together blew it.

And Beyonce has people that should stay on top of all the technicalities, its not her job she pays people to make sure all the legal stuff is taken care of!

WOW What a snobby old bag. Turned an ugly situation uglier.

whatever happened to someone just doing a great job at something!i thought she did wonderful. people in our country build more political, social, 'diversity' walls by looking more into issues. its a shame that we can't just say, great job. who cares if you like this person and not that! i mean really...when are people going to wake up?? has america become so sensitive that we can't just say...good job?? nothing more was intended by the action? its a hard thing to determine what is malicously done or something done without due thought. cut her a break already! *i thought she was great and not disrespectful in any way* i was invited to sing at the ball, i'm not mad...grow up Etta

It's sad that Beyonce gets verbally abused because she sang a song! Obviously the Obama's didn't want Etta James to sing it (maybe the fact that she doesn't like him...) so they asked someone who supports him to sing it.

I think Beyonce sang it as good or better then Etta James....but that is my opinion!

I think out of courtesy they should of contacted Ettha and tell her that Beyonce will be doing a rendition of her song.

And Ettha sounds bratty. Sounds like my grandmother. Someone really annoying and loud mouthed...

Beyonce is sexy and young. :) So beyonce. I love you.

If it wasn't Beyonce, it would have been someone else!!! The song "At Last" will live on even after both Etta and Beyonce have left this world and has been performed by everybody of their mothers. Some, I say better than both Etta and Beyonce. Both versions are good in their own right! It just seems odd to me that Etta was on the set to help Beyonce play her in the movie and even commented that she did an admirable job upon the release. What has changed since then? And lets not even get into the whole Aretha/Beyonce crap!!!!!

Etta James has the right to her opinion. However she shouldn't blame beyonce, because she was allowed to sing the song. My thoughts on how Beyonce perfomed it are not good. I think she sounded terrible. Emotional or not. that's just my opinion.

Beyonce is no Etta James.........
At last is a classic and Etta made it that way.

54. Chad -
Eff Etta James. If Barack isn't her President, then she should take her old has-been ars to Canada for the next 8 years.

55. James B -
Let me start by saying I've never bought, nor ever will buy, a Beyonce' record in my lifetime. That said......

Didn't I see Beyonce' sing this song on an awards show in the late fall/early winter and Etta James was in the audience smiling away? Beyonce' went down to her seat and reached out to her. Etta took her hand briefly and was ALL SMILES.

Sounds like somebody didn't get more recognition and is angry and bitter. Look Etta....you didn't write your songs, and your time has come and gone. You don't deserve the respect of Ray Charles. Aretha gets respect (well...because she demands it in a song) but also because she took female R-n-B to incomparable heights.

Please Etta, just get over yourself.

James had every right to be upset. Beyonce's performance was terrible!!!!!!!!!

57. Nicole M -
Beyonce can't sing? lol...okay

Why would they want her to sing it if she feels that way about the President? And it is obvious why they would want to pick that song to be sung. Since asking the crabby lady to sing it is not an option, ask someone who wants to.

59. Amy -
One would think that there are more important issues at hand than that of a by-gone singer getting her feathers ruffled becasue someone else song "her" song. My take is simple...quit being a diva and do your job.
