Etta James Disses Beyonce's Inauguration Performance

Posted Thu Feb 5, 2009 12:42pm PST by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

It's safe to assume that Beyonce's portrayal of Etta James in the retro film Cadillac Records did not impress the legendary soul singer.

The 71-year-old pioneer, who rose to fame in 1950s, recently made it clear that she was not a fan of the self-proclaimed diva whose third solo album I Am...Sasha Fierce is the #3 album in the country.

Before performing "At Last" at Seattle's Paramount Theatre last Wednesday, James complained about Beyonce singing the song for President Obama and wife Michelle's first dance at the Neighborhood Ball.

"You know that woman he had singing for him, singing my song, she's going to get her a-- whipped," Etta said to a thunderous applause. She went on to add that she could not "stand" Beyonce.

Some dismiss James' anger as jealously, saying that she is only upset because she was not invited to perform the song herself.

However, James' anger warrants the asking of a few key questions:

Did anyone from Obama or Beyonce's camps contact James beforehand to seek her blessing?

Since Etta is not credited as a songwriter for "At Last," she technically does not have the authority to approve who sings the song. However, considering the significance of the song being performed at the inauguration ball for the first African American president and furthermore the song being used for the president's first dance with the first lady, consulting James beforehand would have been the honorable thing to do. I know that appropriate clearances were already in place for Beyonce to perform the song for the promotion of Cadillac Records, but the inauguration is a historical, not promotional, event.

Additionally, based on James' rant, she is not a fan of the president either. When addressing the Seattle crowd, she referred to Obama as "your president...the one with the big ears," and added, "he's not my president."

Was James even considered to sing or even invited to the inauguration?

Let's be honest, would the inauguration committee have asked Beyonce to sing an Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross or Tina Turner song in lieu of having their involvement? We all know the answer to that question. Since Etta has said that she is not a supporter of Obama, had she received an invite or not, maybe she would not have attended. To take it a step further, if Etta had made it clear that she did not want any ties to Obama, why then would they use her staple song to celebrate his first day of presidency?

Ironically, the day following Beyonce's January 20 performance, James' son Donto James was quoted in the New York Daily News saying that his mother loved the rendition. "She thought it was great," Donto said. "She's gotten emotional, just like everybody else."

This isn't the first time Beyonce has caught flack from one of her predecessors. Almost exactly one year ago, I blogged about a tongue lashing Beyonce received from Aretha Franklin. The Queen Of Soul was upset with Beyonce for referring to Tina Turner as "the Queen" during an introduction at last year's Grammys.

In this instance, I sided with Beyonce. I agree that Aretha is the sole Queen Of Soul, but also acknowledge that Tina Turner, too, is a queen.

In the case of Etta James, I take Etta's side. Though her reaction is crass for someone of her stature, I feel that she was robbed of a moment in history. Considering her struggles to break into the music business in the 1950s and ability to prevail with such great success (she was inducted in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993), she should have had the opportunity to sing the song (that she popularized) for the president.

If "At Last" had not been significant and did not express the message that the inauguration committee wanted to convey, they would have selected another song. But they wanted "At Last."

I bet Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" wasn't even up for discussion.

A representative for Beyonce said that the singer does not have a statement or comment at this time.

You know, I don't care who you are, most people thought the same thing why didn't they give Ms Etta a chance to sing it. At that age people feel they can say whatever they like at this point. But Beyonce could have even suggested it so anywho that's my thought. Hello wasn't Stevie singing his stuff as well as letting others.

Billy Johnson, Jr didnt do his homework before offering his 2cents. Etta James doesnt even consider Obama to be her president. So I dont think any amount of ego stroking would have made the outcome different. Etta James is known for exactly what she displayed recently.

The song was a ground breaker for Etta James, she did it with passion, the beyonce version is a joke at best. beyonce should show a little bit more respect for people who are better singers. I'm surprise Obama didn't invite Ms. James to sing her own song for the inaugaration.

Honestly,I LUV beyonce, and think shes one of the greats of ur generation..but she couldve done better at the inauguration ball for sure..and Etta is just jealous and old and bitter..lol

Let the President honor Etta James in a way that he sees fit. A command performance at the White House seems appropriate, if Etta would accept the invitation.

Beyonce is such a diva. I don't see what the song had to do w/obama, but who cares

69. Joe B -
They should have just gotten BLONDIE to sing "One Way Or Another" instead. :-P

All fans aside, Etta has a right to be upset, but she didn't need to act so class(less). Beyonce sang it well, Etta did back in the day... and now it's just a case of a Diva having a fit in an unprofessional way, and another Diva just... singing well.

P.S. Who knows the story behind that day, maybe Beyonce did have approval to sing from the record company and Etta was just mad that she didn't get to do it.

This is Ludicrous, It's not Etta's song anyway.... She sang it as a cover herself. Who the heck is she to speak at all. Nat King Cole sang it before her and he sang it after someone else.... SITDOWNANDSHUTUPETTA, just be glad that your name has been brought back into mainstream media

Etta is just being a whiner. She isn't the only person to record that song. She is actually the third behind Nat King Cole and Glenn Miller. Many people know her version, but she has no claim at all to anything having to do with that song.

I think that Ms. James is being petty! There are many people who have coverd this song Joan Osborne just to name one, does she also have issues with her too? She is not an Obama fan so why should she be asked to sing the song? Maybe this is Pres. Obama and Michelle's "song" so that is why they choose it. Also I think Beyonce did a great job and she gave the moment the respect it deserved. Ms. James needs to get over herself!

74. Kim -
Etta James would have solidified the moment with the grandure that it deserved. Instead the Pres & First Lady received a second hand song from a second hand singer.

me personally I don't care to much for beyonce either, but with all do respect ms james was wrong for what she said. beyonce did a great job performing it and etta did a great job writing and performing it back in her time. but it's past her time. it's not fair to take it out on obama either. she was wrong.i'm not a fan of beyonce but ms. james went to far. they should've asked her can they use her song, but still alot of what she said was uncalled for.

76. fitfavored -
Sadly, Etta James has not been performing well for some time.

Beyonce did a great job.

77. LynnS -
This song belongs to Etta. Let her have her gripe

78. Edensdestiny -
Is this really noteworthy??? "At Last" we have another politician ready to break promises in the White House? At last, we have more debt than ever in our country? At last, we have two useless wars going on at once? I will give a resounding "AT LAST," Bush is out of the Oval Office :0)

Im on Etta's side.. Beyonce had no righ to sing her song... Plus she messed it up. I would b pissed as well.. Go on Etta!!! I dont like her remarks on Obama though

80. Elizabeth -
I'm siding with Etta James on this one.
