Etta James Disses Beyonce's Inauguration Performance

Posted Thu Feb 5, 2009 12:42pm PST by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

It's safe to assume that Beyonce's portrayal of Etta James in the retro film Cadillac Records did not impress the legendary soul singer.

The 71-year-old pioneer, who rose to fame in 1950s, recently made it clear that she was not a fan of the self-proclaimed diva whose third solo album I Am...Sasha Fierce is the #3 album in the country.

Before performing "At Last" at Seattle's Paramount Theatre last Wednesday, James complained about Beyonce singing the song for President Obama and wife Michelle's first dance at the Neighborhood Ball.

"You know that woman he had singing for him, singing my song, she's going to get her a-- whipped," Etta said to a thunderous applause. She went on to add that she could not "stand" Beyonce.

Some dismiss James' anger as jealously, saying that she is only upset because she was not invited to perform the song herself.

However, James' anger warrants the asking of a few key questions:

Did anyone from Obama or Beyonce's camps contact James beforehand to seek her blessing?

Since Etta is not credited as a songwriter for "At Last," she technically does not have the authority to approve who sings the song. However, considering the significance of the song being performed at the inauguration ball for the first African American president and furthermore the song being used for the president's first dance with the first lady, consulting James beforehand would have been the honorable thing to do. I know that appropriate clearances were already in place for Beyonce to perform the song for the promotion of Cadillac Records, but the inauguration is a historical, not promotional, event.

Additionally, based on James' rant, she is not a fan of the president either. When addressing the Seattle crowd, she referred to Obama as "your president...the one with the big ears," and added, "he's not my president."

Was James even considered to sing or even invited to the inauguration?

Let's be honest, would the inauguration committee have asked Beyonce to sing an Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross or Tina Turner song in lieu of having their involvement? We all know the answer to that question. Since Etta has said that she is not a supporter of Obama, had she received an invite or not, maybe she would not have attended. To take it a step further, if Etta had made it clear that she did not want any ties to Obama, why then would they use her staple song to celebrate his first day of presidency?

Ironically, the day following Beyonce's January 20 performance, James' son Donto James was quoted in the New York Daily News saying that his mother loved the rendition. "She thought it was great," Donto said. "She's gotten emotional, just like everybody else."

This isn't the first time Beyonce has caught flack from one of her predecessors. Almost exactly one year ago, I blogged about a tongue lashing Beyonce received from Aretha Franklin. The Queen Of Soul was upset with Beyonce for referring to Tina Turner as "the Queen" during an introduction at last year's Grammys.

In this instance, I sided with Beyonce. I agree that Aretha is the sole Queen Of Soul, but also acknowledge that Tina Turner, too, is a queen.

In the case of Etta James, I take Etta's side. Though her reaction is crass for someone of her stature, I feel that she was robbed of a moment in history. Considering her struggles to break into the music business in the 1950s and ability to prevail with such great success (she was inducted in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993), she should have had the opportunity to sing the song (that she popularized) for the president.

If "At Last" had not been significant and did not express the message that the inauguration committee wanted to convey, they would have selected another song. But they wanted "At Last."

I bet Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" wasn't even up for discussion.

A representative for Beyonce said that the singer does not have a statement or comment at this time.

Etta James seems a little wacky.

Etta James could use a lesson or two from Beyonce on class. Beyonce did a fantastic job singing at the inauguration. She did Houston proud!

Word up! I agree...I used to love Beyonce, now she's just average to me. She's cocky and screams all over the place. I miss sincere people like Aaliyah (RIP). I'm not saying Beyonce can't sing, but she's such a camera hog. I give props to Etta James. She reiterates what I feel!

wow what a biotch. beyonce was (and is) awesome

125. LizzieL -
Whatever, she's just a washed up drug addict has been.

First of all, Etta james is a relic of an age of pioneers, many like her who got screwed out of theie masters and royalties because of their ignorance. Ms. james showd her ignorance at the Seattle function where she obviously showed her senile side. Who does she think she is? Did anyone know she was still alive before the pic with Beyonce? NO! So, get over yourself. And she really hit a new low when she made those disparaging remarks about President Obama. Don't get mad because your trifling ass dad refused to recognize you. He's in the same boat as you, Etta! He had Daddy issues, too!

Etta James is one of the lowest forms of minority to me: the race of Blacks who hate themselves because they're black and hate other black people. Go crawl back into the desolate hole of despair you lived in before Beyonce' revived your work.

FYI, if 'At Last' was such a treasure, don't you think it would be a mainstay on the classic oldies stations, of which I listen to regularly? Etta needs her ass whipped for being so classless and spiteful.

Are you serious? She should be honor that Beyonce sang her song. Why is she hating for? Its a new generation.... move on... she had her fame. There are millions of other song Obama could have chosen. He obviously like her song. I will not say her name like the way she would not say Obama's.
Yes she work hard in her career, but if she using this to cause some publicity, it will only damage her legacy. Beyonce have fan base from Japan to Europe, Africa, and United States. Not a "wise" decision to do this.

Etta should have been the one to sing the song. Her generation paved the way for entertainers like Beyonce. Wether or not Ms. James supports Obama is beside the point. Etta James has been "dissed" by the White House

I'm a big Etta James fan, but I'm also a fan of Beyonce's ass... so I'll take the job of whipping it. End of story. :)

At last, some one I can agree with. Go Etta!

I know that there is always going to be an entertainer that many people do not like. I am saddened more than anything else to see a black woman attack/criticize/belittle or reject another black woman.
Etta James WAS someone I admired because of what she went through to get the recognition she received.
Beyonce has shown time and time again, that she is a young lady with style, class and the gracious attitude to learn accept the lessons of life. If it were not for the Etta's and Aretha's of the world Beyonce would not have had her chance.
YOU QUEENS should act like one. Maybe if you watched Beyonce, you would learn how a lady acts.

what a disgrace to Etta James. Beyonce did not do the song justice, as she often does not, but asking permission of the original singer is respect in my book. And obviously there was none here.

136. Dan -
there are.
i dont see the problem though.
they are both two amazing singers, and they both sing the song well

137. Chinadoll -
I think Etta James is right. How she went about it, I think she didn't have to go to the extreme to get her point across. That song Beyonce sang was Etta James signature song. If anyone should sing it, it should of been Etta James. First Black President which is historical, then Etta James should of sang the song.

138. Northmiamidave -
Etta,

Get a grip! You are are making a fool of yourself!

Beyonce did a great job!

You know what the lady is old...further more in my experience with old people they lived long and they feel they have the right to say what they want to say.

I don't think she is jealous and I agree with the writer, after Etta saw "Cadillac Records" she probably was disappointed in her performance.

Beyonce is a good performer but she ain't all that, they should have given someone else the spotlight for a change...they should have given it to Ms. James herself.

Remind me...This song is Etta James' HOW? She sang it. Period. She has no rights to it, she isn't the only singer who ever sang it, and she has a lot of nerve trying to take anything away from Beyonce, Obama, or anyone else because she wasn't asked to be the one to perform. Sheesh!
