Etta James Disses Beyonce's Inauguration Performance

Posted Thu Feb 5, 2009 12:42pm PST by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

It's safe to assume that Beyonce's portrayal of Etta James in the retro film Cadillac Records did not impress the legendary soul singer.

The 71-year-old pioneer, who rose to fame in 1950s, recently made it clear that she was not a fan of the self-proclaimed diva whose third solo album I Am...Sasha Fierce is the #3 album in the country.

Before performing "At Last" at Seattle's Paramount Theatre last Wednesday, James complained about Beyonce singing the song for President Obama and wife Michelle's first dance at the Neighborhood Ball.

"You know that woman he had singing for him, singing my song, she's going to get her a-- whipped," Etta said to a thunderous applause. She went on to add that she could not "stand" Beyonce.

Some dismiss James' anger as jealously, saying that she is only upset because she was not invited to perform the song herself.

However, James' anger warrants the asking of a few key questions:

Did anyone from Obama or Beyonce's camps contact James beforehand to seek her blessing?

Since Etta is not credited as a songwriter for "At Last," she technically does not have the authority to approve who sings the song. However, considering the significance of the song being performed at the inauguration ball for the first African American president and furthermore the song being used for the president's first dance with the first lady, consulting James beforehand would have been the honorable thing to do. I know that appropriate clearances were already in place for Beyonce to perform the song for the promotion of Cadillac Records, but the inauguration is a historical, not promotional, event.

Additionally, based on James' rant, she is not a fan of the president either. When addressing the Seattle crowd, she referred to Obama as "your president...the one with the big ears," and added, "he's not my president."

Was James even considered to sing or even invited to the inauguration?

Let's be honest, would the inauguration committee have asked Beyonce to sing an Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross or Tina Turner song in lieu of having their involvement? We all know the answer to that question. Since Etta has said that she is not a supporter of Obama, had she received an invite or not, maybe she would not have attended. To take it a step further, if Etta had made it clear that she did not want any ties to Obama, why then would they use her staple song to celebrate his first day of presidency?

Ironically, the day following Beyonce's January 20 performance, James' son Donto James was quoted in the New York Daily News saying that his mother loved the rendition. "She thought it was great," Donto said. "She's gotten emotional, just like everybody else."

This isn't the first time Beyonce has caught flack from one of her predecessors. Almost exactly one year ago, I blogged about a tongue lashing Beyonce received from Aretha Franklin. The Queen Of Soul was upset with Beyonce for referring to Tina Turner as "the Queen" during an introduction at last year's Grammys.

In this instance, I sided with Beyonce. I agree that Aretha is the sole Queen Of Soul, but also acknowledge that Tina Turner, too, is a queen.

In the case of Etta James, I take Etta's side. Though her reaction is crass for someone of her stature, I feel that she was robbed of a moment in history. Considering her struggles to break into the music business in the 1950s and ability to prevail with such great success (she was inducted in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993), she should have had the opportunity to sing the song (that she popularized) for the president.

If "At Last" had not been significant and did not express the message that the inauguration committee wanted to convey, they would have selected another song. But they wanted "At Last."

I bet Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" wasn't even up for discussion.

A representative for Beyonce said that the singer does not have a statement or comment at this time.

Etta is just jealous because she is an old washed up has been. I love Beyonce and like "mazuline m" said, she was just doing her job.

Let's see, who would I rather have sing at my party ? a fat, bitter, angry old woman with a drinking problem or someone hot and young. Etta James should just die already

143. Thomas G -
dont be singing my song...sheet

144. thats hot! -
Whatever, I agree...Beyonce needs to chill the hell out and stop acting like she is a legend. Why is she singing someone else's song that of whom is still alive! Big disrespect to Etta James.. She needs to stick with her "single ladies" (put a ring on it) lol..

145. Katherine -
Amazing. I thought Beyonce did a fantastic job with that song. Etta needs to get over it.

In the grand scope of things, what is the big deal!?! please don't make an issue out of Beyonce singing a song to the President. Etta James has a right to be upset if she wishes. But beyond that, who cares.

147. Heath -
The Pres screwed up that one! I'd be pissed too..

148. Hondubirding -
Black folk always do this sort of rants

Etta ~ sit your ole Ass down some where!
You are too ole to be hating like that.

Aya - we know you voted for your person just because he was white. Also a stipid thing to make a decision by. And I'm not of any of the race choices so what does that make me?

I think beyonce needs to get over herself she can't keep going on trying to steal other peoples thunder I'm gald it keeps biting her in the butt she doesn't deserve any bit of the fame she's recieved, she's a horrible singer and an even worse actress. I wish she would just get a new career and stop bothering people

152. Harris -
she is gets too much credit and she is way overrated.

Hmmm. On the one hand, I think Etta is acting like a child (and really, that Obama comment was quite unnecessary... but I may be a bit biased because I voted for Obama and am optimistic about his Presidency). She does need to grow up. On the other hand, I do think they should've consulted with her first before using the song - I realize it isn't her place, legally, to say yes or no as she didn't have a hand in the writing or production. But it would've been the prudent thing to do in this situation, particularly if they're using a signature song of hers to associate with someone she doesn't support... much like how Heart asked that Barracuda not be used in conjuction with promotion of McCain and Palin, as Heart did not support them (and I think it was rude of Gretchen Wilson to perform it in support of McCain and Palin despite Heart's wishes). So this is a double-edged sword. Plus, I don't particularly care for Bee nowadays either, although for reasons other than the At Last dramafest.

what kind of man gossips like a school girl?

On one hand, I think there was something to the idea that James should have been asked for her blessing. I think James' reaction at this point has all the earmarks of petty jealousy. Obama's entire campaign was about youth and change. Having a young and still rising star preform the song for the first dance just followed that trend (even if it was more of a shuffle on Obama's part)

Please proceed to next life Etta..Atleast Beyonce is rated!

I think that it is crappy for Beyonce to catch the bitter emotions of bitter old ladies who cannot be happy for a younger sister to make such great accomplishments, its like a cat fight between these women who should take pride in the road they paved but instead choose to be critical of every action, as if criticizing a duaghter that is never good enough and cant do anything right. How many people do you think googled that song, and how many do you think downloaded it and purchased it immediately after. So regardless of the mixed emotions that she had she needed to remember her age, remember she is first a lady then a diva, or queen-whatever and once upon a time she was a young performer.

I am so sick and tired of people hating on B! I love her she is my girl, I swear jealousy comes in all sizes and ages. I mean get over it the girl is a diva, she has the body, the look, and the voice. All I have to say is do yo thang B! Let the haters hate that means ur doing something right!!!

As much as I love music, lets remember this is just pop music, it comes and it goes. People wanted that song, sung by a relevant current artist. Sorry etta isn't that anymore, and Beyonce will be lucky to go down in history as anywhere near as important. Pop music and fame is fickel and something noone should make there God.

i am sick and tired of the back lash Beyonce recieves just because she's beautful and can sing amazing. It's ridiculous that Etta James would say something like that about her and Obama. Of All people I never expect that kind of talk from an icon that grew up in that harsh era of america. I have lost complete respect for her...Beyonce keep ya head up..Barack keep ya head up, and Etta James get a life for real
