The Rap Pack Brings "Swagga" To Grammy Stage

Posted Mon Feb 9, 2009 12:23am PST by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

The Grammy's isn't over yet, but I just watched my favorite part, the performance of T.I.'s "Swagga Like Us" featuring Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil' Wayne and the pregnant M.I.A.

"Swagga Like Us" is my favorite song of 2008 and from the moment I heard it I thought it was a great idea to pull the "swagga like us" sample from M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes." M.I.A.'s high-pitched melodic voice, the militaristic track and rhymes from four of hip-hop's biggest MCs had no chance of failing.

How appropriate to have the former rapper turned Oscar-nominated actress Queen Latifah introduce the performance and dub them the Rap Pack, a fitting comparison to the Rat Pack.

Shown through black and white lenses, the set opens with a pregnant M.I.A., whose due date is actually today, dressed in arguably the most inappropriate outfit a performing pregnant mother could ever wear-a black sheer bodysuit with polka dot circles covering her chest, belly and backside. One good verse into her hit "Paper Planes" the curtains behind her open to reveal the superstar rappers and the tune switches to "Swagga Like Us."

Building on the their comparison to 50s Hollywood elite gang of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, the Grammy stage is made up like a big band set, a band housed in an orchestra section and all.

All donning tuxedos, Kanye was up first, exuding enough confidence to momentarily take the emphasis off his New Edition-like mullet, semi-Mohawk shag. The hype ensues as Jay-Z, Wayne and T.I. take center stage, spewing their verses and owning the Grammy moment.

There was so much energy I would not be surprised if M.I.A. exited only to head to the hospital to deliver that baby that had just been a part of hip-hop history.

I am so happy rap is getting the long over due respect and attention. The song says alot about how much society has accepted rap music and the "swagger" that comes along with it.

2. JarrettT -
The funny thing is that they sampled music from M.I.A., for this song, who sampled music from the Clash for her song. How original!

One of the worst performances I've ever seen. My wife and I were laughing on how pathetic this was. Four morons yelling out unintelligable nonsense. What an embarrassment. On the other hand, Paul McCartney was great!

so um to the #4..yahoo! Music user!! um that was the greatest collabo in grammy history..minus the fact that M.I.A. came out there wearing watevr that was suppose to be..they represented the "swagger" that is way over due for hip-hop! so u and ur wife can buzz off! bc obviously u dont like rap or hip-hop music! take a look at the lyrics b4 ya knock a song down..got it!!

5. Monique -
OK...Yahoo Music it's obvious you don't know Hip Hop. I can say how BORING I thought Paul McCartney was, but I won't. You don't know how much of a moron you sound like by making that unintelligent statment that's full of ignorant nonsense. Know what ur talking about b4 you make such ignorant statements. The Rap Pack ripped it!!!!!!!!!!!! If you don't know you need to ask.

to #3 Yahoo1 Music User. that was definitely one of the best collaborations in history. TI was amazing and lil wayne was also very good. but wtf was MIA wearing? lol. and anyway #3 y r u watching this video if u obviously hate rap or hip hop or anything that doesen't fit into your little model of "good music". Mccartney was pretty good though.

Rap's legacy:
1) The best song of the year is still someone else's beat.
2) Such low self esteem that all they can rap about is swagger.
3) Every year rap music gets more amateurish.

What happened to all the promise Rap showed with groups like Public Enemy? Last nights rat pack was aptly named because it smelled like something from the sewer instead of what rap should have evolved into over the last thirty years.

Even PE sampled others music.
2) Such low self esteem that all they can rap about is swagger.
Having swagger is all about high self esteem.
3) Every year rap music gets more amateurish.
I kind of agree with number 3.

9. Yahoo! Music User -
old people cant stand new music

10. __A_YAHOO_USER__ -
Actually MadMike, CK has a point. If you are big, you don't need to sing about it. If you are small, then its probably a good idea to sing about being big.

But anyway, I thought overall it was pretty good, but at times lacked the punch it should have packed.

And btw, isn't it about time they stopped singing about "swagga"...I mean, seriously you guys...

The Rap Pack? Please. Those idiots should be thankful that there are a bunch of suckers who buy their lame music, or else for their career they would be asking if people would like fries with with their orders!

12. Tenant HO -
Please if you don't appreciate Hip Hop please don't comment about it because there is no comparison with collabo with Paul McCartney. Its obvious that he sucks and this collaboration actually made the show

This was he worst performance of the night. Who they think they are?
Where's Diddy ?

14. cmd -
Ha ha i love how pregnant she is. Love this song

That supposed "Rap Pack" performance was like listening to a train wreck. I'm not trying to knock a pregnant woman, but MIA looked like a swollen lady bug up there. She should have tried something with a little more fabric. And I agree with the take that McCartney looked like he needed a hip replacement and sounded like he was trying to swallow razor blades. Dave Grohl definitely saved that performance.

I don't know or care about the song...just have to give props to M.I.A. for going to the award show in the first place-let alone performing! On my due date I could barely roll my big butt out of bed! LOL

17. Yahoo! Music User -
what was she wearing and how did she get to be a prego and who is the daddy. the performence was aful there were to many people on the stage. and M.I.A she looked like she had a hooker or hooter see through full body suit wit yoshi circles every where. but on the bright side if you look at her alfit from far away it looks like a smilie face.

if you know the history of rap it started in the hood... with kids who didnt have anything but other peoples records... to sample...no instruments...just sampled beats and a microphone. And the Eatles stole their whole style from early black performers...and who hates on a pregnant woman...ohhhh yea HATERS.

19. Megan -
MIA looked horrible and the performence was bad they wasted a ton of time w/ all those performances. Boring!

20. Abbie -
I have to agree with the first comment. It is nice to get the respect that rap deserves! These four are just as talented as anybody else!
I loved the performance, in my opinion it was the best performance of the night. Kanye, Lil Wayne, Jay Z, and TI are my 4 favorite rappers and it was AMAZING watching them perform this song. Gave me chills. Just incredible.
