T.I. Sends Right Message At Jail Sentencing

Posted Fri Mar 27, 2009 12:24pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

As a hip-hop fan and journalist I have watched a multitude of unremorseful rappers get incarcerated.

This is not to say that I don't think that some of the arrests were unjust because I do. But in the endless instances of drug charges, acts of violence and even perjury, I have never seen a hip-hop artist admit to any wrongdoing or accept any responsibility for their actions that ultimately lead to their sentencing.

This always concerned me because of the message it sends to the young impressionable fans. A message that says someone else was to blame for rapper's decision to carrying an illegal drug, assault someone or lie in court.

T.I. originally seemed to be heading down that same path when he pleaded guilty when charged with attempting to buy unregistered machine guns and silencers the day he was scheduled to perform at the 2007 BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta. He posted the $3 million bail and was sentenced to house arrest. But he reconsidered maintaining his not guilty plea when he learned that if he lost in court he could face a maximum of 10 years in prison and $250,000 fine for each count.

Last March, T.I. was fortunate to be able to make a deal with the judge. In exchange for admitting guilt to a federal weapons charge he could serve one year and one day in jail. Friday, he was officially sentenced and will begin serving his jail time in the next 30 to 60 days.

But even though T.I. managed to avoid more severe punishment for his crime, he actually did something that other rappers in his same position likely would have never done. He accepted responsibility.

When he entered the Atlanta courtroom Friday he did not make excuses, reports AP. "Today, I would like to say thank you to some, and apologize to all," the multiplatinum selling rapper said to U.S. District Judge Charles Pannell Jr.

"Everything I learned was through trial and error," T.I. added. "I've learned lessons in my life to put in my music so people won't make the same mistakes as I."

I appreciate that T.I. was  not just spewing rhetoric.

His current single "Dead And Gone," a collaboration with Justin Timberlake, is about a reformed man who has learned from his transgressions. He raps, "Now I get it now I take time to think before I make mistakes." The hardcore rapper managed to do the impossible by scoring a hit with a positive record. The song is No. 4 on The Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at No. 2.

Additionally, T.I. has completed 1,000 hours of community service, a lot of which has included talking to kids about avoiding the troubles he experienced. He has made 262 related public appearances.

Additionally, he was the subject of a MTV reality show called "Road To Redemption" that chronicled some of his efforts to help steer kids onto the right path.

T.I. has also recently said that he hoped that kids would be not impressed by his rap sheet but would acknowledge that he is taking the steps to become a changed man.

Hopefully, T.I.'s plight will not just inspire youth, but his fellow rappers alike.

I respect TI more now than I did before his last arrest. I'm the same age as TI and many of my friends and people I know of the same age where we are at a crossroads in our lives. I really like his dong Dead and Gone.

Whoo hooo!!! ahha

I love the message that he is sending to our young people. So many of them get so wrapped up in wanting to portray a hardcore image and they will do anything to maintain it. T.I. has taken the time to show them that being in and out of the system is not cool and that is not the way they should choose to live their lives.

T.I. is really being a great role model to ages, backgrounds, and racial groups fo all kind!!! not only is he my FAVORITE rapper, lyrics not to mention fine as hell. Now we all have another reason to look up to him! Although, I am sure he will give us even more to admire. Everyone makes mistakes, it's learning from them that make you who you are.

I RESPECT T.I SO MUCH FOR BEING HONEST AND STEPPING UP AND TRYING TO WHAT HE CAN DO GIVE BACK. I LOVE HIS SHOW. I THINK HE HAS REALLY STEPPED OUT AND HELPED SO MANY KIDS AND YOUNG ADULTS. THEY HAVE BEEN SHOWN WHAT COULD HAPPEN TO THEM IF THEY STAY ON THE ROAD THAT THEY ARE ON NOW. I FEEL HE IS VERY INSPIRATIONAL TO THE YOUTH COMMUNITY. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH HIM WHILE HE GOES THROUGH THIS, AND WITH HIS FAMILY WHO MUST NOW DEAL WITH HIM NOT BEING AT HOME FOR A YEAR. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP T.I AND HANG IN THERE. IT WILL BE OVER BEFORE YOU KNOW IT AND YOU WILL BE MAKING MUSIC AND REACHING OUT TO PEOPLE AGAIN SOON.

TI is not the best rapper alive and neither is Lil Wayne, but by treating the situation the way he has, he is now the most respected rapper of the South.

However, we have to all remember that a crime is a crime. But by the way TI is acting, he can be forgiven.

Gee you never saw many of the black jazz musicians ever going to jail nor Motown greats like Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder. Some of the most talented black musicians are jazz musicians. Why doesnt the younger generation learn to make real music that takes time, dedication and a sense of purity rather a focus on money and violence? Greed thats all and greed is a sign of weakness and ignorance. Playing the emotional roller coaster doesnt cut it. This "thug" should serve hard time period. Our country has become a playground for all types of criminal behaviour and its time we as a nation said NO. Black or white it shouldnt mater a criminal is a criminal.

Rappers are starting to calm down and realize that there is nothing wrong with admitting fault. In fact, in my eyes it looks like someone is scared out of their mind when they try and act tough all the time. They are compensating when they do that. I wonder what he was going to do with automatics and silencers... besides try and murder someone and get away with it.

Much, much respect to T.I. And that Reality Show he has is incredible. That's the first reality show that I make sure I watch and I have never even bought or picked up a T.I. CD...His singles were cool and I knew he was cool, I just never got into him...But now that I see his character and morals are so on point I have to break down and buy all his joints today at Ameoba

Those guns he tried to purchase might have been for home protection, but you can buy legal guns that will suffice. The possibility of some innocent person getting slain by the illegal machine guns is why he should be held accountable.

KEEP YOUR HEAD UP HOMIE,AT THE END THERE WILL BE NOBODY BUT YOU AND ALMIGHTY

i love t.i and have met him t.i call me

Everybody shuld respect t.i for doing what he's doing. He is accepting responsibility and is paying for his actions. Not saying what he did was right. But many other people wuld keep this on the downlow like they never did anything wrong. I will alwayz respect him as a rapper and a man.
