On The Road With JamBase: Manchester Orchestra

Posted Fri Nov 21, 2008 3:49pm PST by Aaron Kayce in On the Road With JamBase
Neither an orchestra nor from Manchester, this band is mysterious. Actually from Atlanta, GA, the young quintet is full of shadows, dark corners, emotional catharsis and gut-piercing pain. Bandleader Andy Hull found his path while in high school and he hasn't looked back. Busy writing songs and turning on industry big wigs, Hull decided to get home schooled for his senior year and write an album. While the band's lineup slowly materialized they put Hull's efforts to wax and released the EP You Brainstorm, I Brainstorm, But Brilliance Needs A Good Editor. Not even in their twenties, the band hit the road hard and began to find the chemistry that would inform their full-length debut, 2006's breakout I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child. The title is perfect: dark, full of questions, burdened with emotion, ready to explode or implode--this is Manchester Orchestra. Now supporting the EP/DVD Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind (released October 14), Manchester Orchestra are headlining a tour with Dead Confederate as support. Dates available here.

Name: Jeremiah Edmond
Band(s): Manchester Orchestra
Instrument(s): Drums
Album you always take on tour: My Morning Jacket Z

What would someone always find in your van or tour bus? What supplies don't you leave home without?

A mess of pillows, blankets and bags. We always bring a lot of medicine with us. Being sick on the road is the worst so we drink a lot of Emergen-C and Airborne. You can usually find a few celebrity gossip mags as well.

What personal rituals do you have to help keep your sanity while on tour?

I try to enjoy the other bands. Watching their sets helps inspire me and helps me remember why we're doing this.

Speaking of rituals, does the band have a pre-show ritual to help prepare for the stage?

Not really. Andy and Chris do vocal warm-ups before the show. Everyone else just hangs out.

Audiences come in all shapes and sizes. What's the screwiest fan encounter you've had? What's a great, positive fan encounter you've had?

I can't really think of any one crazy fan. Maybe I just miss it all 'cause I am packing up the drums or something. Getting to meet the fans that are part of our street time is always great.

What's the strangest thing you've seen from the stage while performing?

A man in a gorilla suit at an outdoor show in Florida.

What's the first thing you like to do after a show?

Sit down and try not to throw up.

Tell us about a great road food stop you've discovered in your travels.

We really don't have a lot of opportunities to go and find good food. We usually are stuck grabbing fast food or eating at the venue. Jonathan is big into finding little pizza shops. Last time we were in New York our friend Brian took us to this amazing restaurant called Nobu. We had the biggest lobster I have ever seen.

If I weren't a musician I'd probably be a (blank) because (blank).

If I weren't a musician I'd probably be a (producer) because (that's what I did before the band).

(Fill in the blank) are the baddest mothas on the planet.

(Colour Revolt) are the baddest mothas on the planet.

Your band mates will often reveal strange things about themselves during a tour. What stuff have your fellow musicians shown you that took you aback or delighted you?

Jonathan was supposed to be a child genius or something. Then he met Andy and it all went downhill.

Name a few things we'd find on your rider.

Water, Red Bull, beer, veggie tray.

What was the musical highlight of your last or current tour and why?

Playing Letterman was amazing. I used to watch it with my parents when I was little so playing it was a big deal. Playing with our friends Colour Revolt and Unwed Sailor in NYC to a packed crowd was really cool too. Colour Revolt was the first band to ever give us a chance and take us on tour and Unwed Sailor was a really influential band for me growing up so that was a really cool night for me.
