Julia Sweeney With "Letting Go Of God"--An Atheist Anthem

Julia Sweeney and me: "Letting Go of God "  (MP3,3:55)

Atheists are big this year. You have the best selling books by Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. In a year where three Republican presidential hopefuls have said they don't believe in evolution, I find it refreshing.  Agree with them or not, none of them have quite the heart and humor of Julia Sweeney. And she's really, really smart.

Julia, who some of you know as Pat from SNL, has also been recognized for her amazing one-woman shows, " God Said Ha" and her latest, "Letting Go of God".

This is the song that we wrote for the movie of "Letting Go Of God" —which isn't out yet, but when it is I am hoping we get a Best Song Grammy. If Melissa can get it for that song she wrote for the Al Gore movie, why can't we?

Also, for those of you in the Los Angeles area, Julia and I are doing the "Jill And Julia Show" at Largo on the 13th of November. What happens is that I sing a song, and then she tells a somewhat related story. As our theme song goes, "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But, overall, it's a swell show.

I know that God is!

Anything that gets people questioning our country's lockstep Christian conformity is a great thing, in my opinion. I planned to read the Hitchens book until I read about his curmudgeonly NY Times review of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." How can he possibly know what he's talking about if he doesn't like Harry Potter!?! :-)

"Letting Go of God" is a wonderful song. I love singing along, especially the chorus. Great melody!

Hi, I love Julia Sweeney's performance/audiobook "Letting Go of God." It made me laugh a lot, but it certainly made me feel better about letting go of god (that's such a great title - it really says it all very well).

I downloaded your single, and I'm enjoying it right now. Best of luck to the both of you!

I think that those of you who proudly boast about there being no God (who by the way is the same God who wakes you up every morning and not your alarm clock and makes your brain function so you can type these blaspemous words) are in for a rude awakening one day. And while you're laughing at this shameful display of "music", you better read Revelations. It's the end of times, guys. Look around you. You may think I'm crazy but I guarantee, one day you will look up in the sky and see Jesus standing there. He's coming back soon and on that day you're gonna wish you had listen.
PS, This goes out to Julia too

mecokkeco - You realize that 70% of the world is not Christian right? This vast majority also finds your beliefs and ideas probably as implausible as you find Hinduism or Islam or whatever. So which one of you is right - probably none. So forget about "guaranteeing" that we will be sorry, and Jesus will be back, because I have heard the same sad song from Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, etc.... The only guarantee is that you don't know the truth and either do I....

6. mecokkeco -
I could argue all day with you, but I'm not going to. I'm gonna pray for you Atheists. I'd rather have faith in Someone than have none in anyone. You won't shake my faith just like I probably won't shake your non belief. Be blessed and have a great day anyways. That's the good thing about God, He doesn't make you believe in Him. You have you OPINION, and I have my beliefs...

7. mecokkeco -
Bobby W.- Oh, and further more, I didn't say anything about what percentage of the world is Christian or not. If 70% of the world worships Satan, will you?

8. Jason A -
I think anything that celebrates a loss of spirituality is kinda sad. Regardless of the faith they are abandoning.

9. mexeecoman -
I deffinetly agree with mecokkeco and i really hope that all of you who agree with Julia eventually see the bigger picture. Im not hear to rag on you but i do know that God is real and thay Jesus died for us. He has done to much in my life and others, maybe even yours, to just let go of Him and say he isnt real. Whatever pain or loss you have experienced in the past doesnt mean you give up on God and start saying that you just dont think he is real or maybe that if he was he wouldnt have done this or made that happen, but the truth is that we choose our own path and we are resonsable for ourselves so dont blame God, look in the mirror people. He Loves you and wants you to trust Him, so do it, he wont hurt you.

There are too many times that I have been late to work, needed a parking space, and said, "Please God, give me somewhere safe to park." A parking space has appeared too many times for this to be sheer luck. God is out there, and anything that celebrates otherwise is certainly within one's own right, but probably not in one's best interest.

I AM A CHRISTIAN and PROUD OF IT. Listen, I am not saying that you MUST be a christian, God blessed each and every one of us with the OPTION TO CHOOSE. GOD DOES NOT FORCE ANY ONE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM. God give "you" the option to choose, if you choose not to believe, then it's probably because you have not yet had the opportunity to experience his SUPER-NATURAL POWER. I can understand why, today there are so many people that call themselves christians yet, do not exhibit JESUS' TRUE LOVE for ALL MAN KIND and I am so sorry for that. There are so many christian leaders and followers that are not living within the realm of what JESUS really taught when He was here on earth. JESUS TAUGHT THAT WE ARE TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER, WE ARE NOT TO JUDGE ANYONE BUT TO PRAY FOR OUR ENEMIES, FOR THEY NOT WHAT THEY DO. Again, I am sorry if any of you readers have been disappointed and or hurt by anyone that has called themselves christians yet were hypocrytes.
I find it so interesting that so many people that have not yet accepted Christ in to their hearts, have so much evil words about Christ. Why is it though that other faiths do not get persecuted, WHY NOT? Glad you asked! JESUS SAID..."YOU WILL BE PERSECUTED FOR MY NAME SAKE, THEY HATED ME AND THEY WILL HATE YOU, "BUT" DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED, FOR YOU WILL REIGN IN HEAVEN WITH ME WHEN I RETURN and YOUR NAME WILL BE WRITTEN IN THE LAMBS BOOK OF LIFE". "COUNT IT ALL JOY WHEN YOU SUFFER TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS FOR MY NAME SAKE, FOR IT BUILDS PERSEVERENCE, ENDURANCE, AND FAITH". I cannot speak for all christians but I can speak for those that live by these words spoken by Christ, that there is ONE GOD,ONE SON OF GOD, ONE TRUTH and NO ONE CAN COME TO THE FATHER (God) BUT ONLY THROUGH THE NAME OF JESUS. One day...our Holy Bible says,"EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW, EVERY TONGUE SHALL CONFESS THAT JESUS IS LORD". That's what we christians say, IT'S WHAT OUR BIBLE SAYS. As you come against us, we are to love on you and pray for you, because we as christians know that there is a HEAVEN and HELL, many will go to heaven and MANY WILL NOT. FAITH..is believing in those things that we can not see, WE CHRISTIANS DO NOT LIVE AS YOU NON-BELIEVERS (since we have been saved) ANYMORE, WE BELIEVE BECAUSE WE SEE GOD'S SUPER-NATURAL WORK IN OUR LIVES. God has set me free from Weed, Sexual Abuse since Child-Hood, and sexual lusts. You see I am every bit human as you my friend, the difference between me and you is....I have always believed in a God and GOD HAS ALWAYS BELIEVED IN ME. So please do not try to display hypocrytical statements saying that you do not believe in anyone or anything..YOU DO BELIVE IN SOMETHING. YOU BELIEVE, that you can make plans months from now or for tomorrow to plan an event of some sort, well, your believing that you will wake up. You go to work, you do not get paid daily, yet by faith you believe your job is going to pay you, right? SO PLEASE DO NOT SAY...THERE IS NO GOD..there just is no GOD IN YOU.

12. Maria Morales -
I THANK YOU HEAVENLY FATHER for giving me the blessing of knowing your SON JESUS. My life has been so much better ever since you have been in my life. I HAVE PEACE, peace that cannot be bought, I HAVE FAITH, faith that is built up by the evidence of your love and miracles in my life, PURITY white as the driven snow, FORGIVENESS for the ugly things I have done and said, though I struggle on a daily basis in this world, YOU ARE JUST TO FORGIVE ME WHEN I TRULY REPENT FROM MY HEART, PROSPERITY to build my jewelry business that YOU BLESSED ME WITH THE IDEAS.
THANK YOU JESUS, THANK YOU FOR THE BLOOD THAT YOU SHED ON THE CROSS, THANK YOU JESUS FOR TEACHING ME HOW TO LOVE MY ENEMIES AND NOT CURSE THEM, THANK YOU JESUS FOR TEACHING ME HOW TO FORGIVE THE MAN WHO RAPED ME, TORTURED ME, ABUSED ME from the age of 6-13 yrs. old.
THANK YOU for being my HERO. I LOVE YOU, IT IS AN HONOR AND A PRIVILEGE TO SERVE YOU.
I WILL FIGHT TO THE END TO DEFEND THE YOUR TRUTH CAUSE YOU ARE THE TRUTH. Jesus is good, not evil, it is He that has taught to love anyone who is ANTI-CHRIST. It is the LOVE OF GOD, THAT LOVES YOU ALL..even if you do not love HIM, and you hate HIM, and you detest CHRIST GOD IS STILL GIVING YOU THE CHOICE TO TURN YOUR LIFE BEFORE the end of time comes.
NON-BELIEVERS...all you have to do to experience Christ...IS ASK GOD TO SHOW YOU AND TO BEGIN TO WORK IN YOUR HEARTS AND I PROMISE...HE WILL. If you are reading this...THEN GOD IS ALREADY BEGUN WORKING ON YOUR FAITH.
I LOVE YOU ALL BELIEVERS and NON-BELIEVERS.:0)

NON-BELEIVERS:
THE HOLY BIBLE SAYS (not me):
Revelation 20:10
The devil, WHO FOOLED THEM, was thrown into the LAKE OF BURNING SULFUR. That is where the BEAST and the FALSE PROPHET had been THROWN. THEY WILL SUFFER DAY and NIGHT FOR EVER AND EVER.

Then DEATH and HELL were thrown into the LAKE OF FIRE. The LAKE OF FIRE is the SECOND DEATH. Anyone whose NAME WAS NOT written in THE BOOK of LIFE was thrown into the lake of fire.

I am not preaching fire and brimstone....I am literally taking it from our HOLY BIBLE.
Take these words up to God if you have questions because they are not my words but the word of God. Don't believe me, research the verse for your self.

Revelation 21:27
Only what is pure will enter it. No one who fools others or does shameful things will enter it. ONLY THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE WRITTEN IN THE LAMB'S BOOK OF LIFE WILL ENTER THE CITY.

So you see NON-BELIEVERS...No everyone goes to heaven, not every one. Even I have to fight my salvation daily so that I can continue to keep my name in THE BOOK OF LIFE. I don't believe ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED..NON-SENSE!
Works without faith is dead.
Faith without works is dead.
Means you can go to church all you want, faithfully but if you aint doin nothin for the kingdom to bring others to the saving knowledge of Christ, you're dead.
Means if you feed the homeless faithfully, yet you do not lead them into the saving knowledge of Christ...you are dead.
IT'S NOT ME WHO SAYS THIS...IT'S OUR HOLY BIBLE.
DON'T EVERY BELIEVE MAN..RESEARCH THE WORDS IN YOUR HOLY BIBLE...King James Version.

Peace out!

I just think its interesting to hear people say that testing or leaving our nation's foundation of Christian beliefs is a good thing. Ever stop to think that maybe our 'system' won't work if it's used in a way it's not designed for? When every signer of the Declaration of Independence(even benjamin franklin who was not a Christian)believed in an all-powerful God and prayed daily together in the early Congress meetings, I think they meant for Christianity to be an integral part of the U.S. Call it Republican, call it conservative, myself, I don't think any of today's candidates are more than money hoarding tycoons but the U.S. needs Christianty to function effectively. Evolution is a non-point but 'trust in God' is the central idea. It's not coincidence that a God-believing country rose from dust to become arguably the most-powerful civilization in history in barely 200 years. To leave that foundation would be the same as a second revolution. Then we'd be in the same boat as the rest of the world.
Here's a second thought, I've always wondered how there can be a 'nice' atheist. Where do they get the niceness? If there is no idea of morality, no idea of good deeds, nothing but ME, why even try to live in a social order? Man doesn't have morality, morality comes from God. As an athiest, you want money, fame, etc(arguably what every living person wants) you will do whatever it takes, kill, cheat, steal, and not feel an ounce of guilt. Ha! Even athiests need God though they claim to reject him. Even athiests feel guilt. Even athiests need God to live in a socially functioning world. It's all a front to get attention as usual.

Maria Morales: It sounds like you have been through alot and have come out with a loving heart. That is proof of the living Christ.

Everyone: Show me another religion/sect/idea/phenomenon in the world that can change lives as Christ does everyday. Good luck.

You listen but you won't hear...
You look but you can't see...

mecokkeco - Your right we shouldn't debate this, I have been in too many of these debates and know they lead nowhere. As for me I would rather search for the truth, or admit I don't know, then believe in something that is convenient and might make me feel better.

My point about the other 70% of the world is, there faith is as strong as yours even though there beliefs are different. If a muslim was to come to you and say I guarantee you will be sorry if you don't believe in Allah and read the Koran, what impact with that have on you? You would probably think it is some poor misguided, brainwashed dude, who believes in a false religion. I just want you to know that Christianity invokes the exact same resoponse in 70% of the world. So while you sit on your perch thinking you have it all right and they have it all wrong, the majority of the world is looking right back at you with disbelief from their own perches.

The agnostics sit back and look at all this and see the insanity in all of you claiming you have a monopoly on an unknowable truth.

Jason A - spirtuality is not exclusive to religion alone. You can be a very spiritual person without ascribing to any particular religion.

16. vt_flash -
Bobby W: Do you believe it's an unknowable truth? Do you believe that everyone who is claming that monopoly, is in the same boat?

You are completely 100% right in saying we should search for the truth. Don't take another man's(or woman's) word when dealing with this incredibly important subject. In my own search for truth, the answer is Christianity. I don't believe we are in the same boat as Muslims or Hindus or whoever else. I do believe the evidence is obvious. To me, sitting back and rejecting this 'insanity' of religious claims is pointless and wasteful. But that doesn't mean someone has already discovered the truth and you have to choose among whats already out there. The Christian church today is disappointing many, my-self included, in that regard.
I believe the Bible, the Word, is the truth. Jesus is the Word. He directly convenes and helps us search for truth. There is no other intimate god-like creature on earth. No one else can make these claims. That is the truth I've found. What else can I do but hope and pray that my life-story helps someone somewhere find this truth aswell? It's like finding an island of gold, more than I could ever use, and no one believing that it exists.
One more thing, the most destructive idea in circulation today is the idea that what I believe makes it truth. That's insane. The idea that what I believe is truth for me and what you believe is truth for you. I belive the moon is made out of cheese. When it's something silly like that, no one is hurt. Now let me merge that idea with arguably the most important question ever conjured by the mind of man for the past ?????? years.

17. vt_flash -
Bobby W: I've clearly upset you. But what part of what I said is untrue exactly?

18. chessicah -
I think that everytime a Christian voices his/her views about Christianity it is met with such sarcasm and resentment. Is it not believable that Jesus came and died for the sins of the world. To most "intelligent" people that sounds ridiculous, but maybe "intelligence" is the problem. I don't have any problem with expanding your knowledge and being all you can be but I think in our search for higher learning we get all screwed and think that the principles and practices of God are archaic and stupid. If you can't touch it, it doesn't exist or if there isn't empirical proof then it doesn't exist. Love can't be touched but it does exist. I think that it is a sad world we live in when we can not recognize God in our everyday life and seek to exclude Him b/c we think that we are so self sufficient we can do all of this ourselves.

19. Bobby W -
Yes I believe all the folks who claim a monopoly are in the same boat. I have studied many of the major religions and I see nothing really significant that distinguishes one from the other. They use the same logic and same threats to demand adherence, and they all pretty much provide a generally good and altruistic bent that promotes the continuation of society. The most telling point in fact, is the similarity in the psychology of believers across religions.

I shouldn't have said that it is unknowable - because I don't really know. What I do know is you don't know what the truth is and either do I. I can present you with tons of evidence and logical inconsistencies, and you, and the Muslims, and the Hindus, etc., will still all proclaim you are right and everyone else is wrong, and you won't have any real evidence to back it up.

20. vt_flash -
Bobby W: This is the depth where debate is pointless. Let me just say Buddha didn't save the Buddhists, Visnu didn't save the Hindus, Muhammad didn't save the Muslims, the old testament didn't save the Jews, it was their teachings that founded their respective faiths. But Jesus saved the Christians. No teachings can make you right with God, only God can. If I were a good person and God accepted me, basically I made myself right with God. Then who needs God? Jesus makes me right with God. That is why I say we are not in the same boat as the others. That is the difference that makes all the difference.

Now I'm going to sacrfice farm animals around my fiery pentagram and scream like the demon I am. Bye Bobby. Good luck man.
