Stupid Ass Party

Posted Fri Oct 19, 2007 11:00am PDT by Jill Sobule in Jill Sobule and The Provocateurs

I just got back from playing a fancy Hollywood star-studded party at the latest trendy Hollywood club.

Everyone was too good looking--I'm not sure if it was in an intimidating way, or in a sort of creepy way. All the girls, fixing their makeup in the powder room, were thin, blond and long-legged. I felt like a midget--I should start wearing high heels again. All the guys had great hair and really expensive looking eyeglass frames. It made me almost understand those bitter right-wing folk who love to deride the Hollywood elite.

Sure they will save a poor orphaned puppy, but would they help, or take in, a piss-smelling bum? Or a struggling musician?

Maybe it's just my bad mood. You see, I was asked to play a millionaire's party for free (which is okay, I do that a lot for friends and charity) but then when I got there, I was treated like...the help. Which I don't mind, being the help, if I get paid at least something...a token...some swag?

So there I was in the back room, away from the fun, waiting for my turn to play for the very chatty crowd. They talked through the entire fifteen-minute set of the band that came on before me. The band, consisting of 4 cute boys, was not as miserable and upset as one would have thought. They were smart and got baked before the show.

But for me, it made me want to leave Los Angeles for some Red State utopia where everyone knows their neighbors and they have block parties. Maybe there I would sing my songs (or learn a Faith Hill cover) and people would...listen.

As it turned out, I didn't end up singing at all. By the time I was supposed to go on, everyone was ready to leave. The party host apologized and agreed that it was not the right atmosphere for music (other than the bad Euro-house that was blaring all through dinner).

So, I walked outside and waited in a long line for the valet. It cost me $10, plus tip. But I did see Meg Ryan.

Do you think they really have block parties?

Neighborhood bbqs end up being the red-state equivalent to a "block party" i guess. You learn some Faith Hill songs and you can tour every backyard in Texas and they'd probably at least pay you in hotdogs! Hmm maybe i'll do that.

I think you were treated poorly and are absolutely entitled to feeling angry and hurt. You have so much talent and should not have to put up with crap like that. I mean you're famous too - right? Comparisons are odious, yet it is hard not too feel small when you get your faced rubbed in it as you described. I was lucky enough to see you and Warren play and you signed my Pink Pearl CD with "Love Jill" - you, my friend, have way more class than those you describe at that party!!!

Sounds like a crappy night. Meg Ryan is awesome though!

On any given night the sweet and spicy message and music that Jill Sobule conveys will resonate with enough people within any crowd that the end result will be positive. I felt that after hearing Jill live during the Pink Pearl tour that there was a revelatory response in myself. A wide-eyed willingness to politely, or impolitely question the yet-to-be-questioned, to think critically, yet maintain a beautiful innocence

It's my feeling that within any crowd this will be the result to any Jill Sobule performance..

It's a good thing there are places like Largo where people actually want to listen to the music (and lyrics). I have definitely become spoiled going to shows there, so that when I go somewhere else and people are talking through the whole show, it's just upsetting. Sorry the party ended up being a waste of time, but I agree with the earlier poster who said it would have been worse if you did have to perform for a crowd like that. I'll look forward to seeing you in the better places for people who do want to listen!

Next time you'd want to shell out bucks for charity, YM or email me. At least, in the Philippines, we can sing-along "I kissed a girl!"
