Obama and me

Now I know what all of those girls at Shea stadium must have felt for the Beatles, or what the bobby soxers saw in Frank, and probably what a few girls in South Korea still feel for Michael Jackson.

On Friday night in Chicago, I played at a Barack Obama fundraiser, along with Wilco and Macy Gray (who was not wild about having to share her dressing room with me).

When they told me I could meet him, I thought, that's cool. I had no idea he would turn me into a silly girl whose heart was all a-flutter.

Sure, I had seen the charisma in his speeches and flashes of it in the debates, but meeting him one-on-one was something entirely different - even if it was only for 10 seconds and a photo op. But, for that 10 seconds (okay maybe it was 7), I was the only person in the whole world that mattered to him. He takes his time as he grasps your hand, looks you deep in the eyes, and… swoon.

I've heard that Clinton (Bill) has this ability too. My Aunt Mickey, who was very proper, uncharacteristically said that when she met Bill, she understood why Monica did what she did.

Of more importance, I have the feeling that this man could actually bring change and hope to an indifferent, cynical or completely disgusted electorate. It was so great to see the concert hall filled with excited 20-somethings. OK, so maybe Michael Jackson wasn't exactly the right analogy. Maybe, it's more like… John Kennedy.

And someday, if anyone ever asked me to, I would so sing "Happy Birthday (Mr. President)" Marilyn-style to Obama.

Where do you guys stand on Hillary vs Obama?

Hi Jill! I'm glad you got to be part of it.

I think Clinton and Obama would make a great ticket, and would be happy with either one at the top. I go back and forth about which one I favor for President. I think Barack has more chance of bringing the nation together, Hillary is more likely to actually get things done in Washington.

that would be great if that could happen

I think Hillary votes Republican and talks about being a Democrat. I'd much rather see Obama - or actually Gravel.

I think Hillary is a leftist who knows just how far toward the center she has to go to get elected, and who's willng to compromise when necessary to get things done. I've had enough of progressives who are so sanctimonious and unwilling to "play politics" that they never really accomplish anything.

As much as I'd like to see Clinton and Obama together on the ticket, I'm not confident it will happen. It's awfully hard for the top two candidates to get through a primary campaign without tearing each other apart. Plus, the VP choice always seems to come down to "which state can he deliver."

Don't you think that together they'd own the black vote and the female vote, and win in a landslide?

He did the same thing to me in Philly this summer. Totally.

I hope Obama gets the nomination. I cant really get behind Clinton, but I do think that either should be positive change in comparison to the current administration. I met Kucinich the other day at a concert where he spoke about clean energy. Honestly I would love to see him as president, but he is or is labeled as "unelectable". Even though I love how radically left he is, the best presidents in our history have been moderate. Liked enough across the spectrum in order to unite the country. The only candidates I see as capable of uniting this country are Obama, whom i prefer, and Giuliani. What do you all think?

I'm not fond of Hillary's politics. She's a good politician and a good campaigner, but I don't like some of the stances she's taken (on Iraq, for instance - and it's just one instance - and her refusal to admit it was a bad vote). Barack, however charismatic he is, still doesn't have enough experience to my mind. I'd love to see a Hillary/Barack ticket as I think that's the killer win for Dems this time around. I would hope that Barack would see an opportunity and take the VP offer. I do not think Hillary would take a VP offer from Barack.

Jill, that one-on-one charisma is exactly what I felt when I met you at your Denver show! You ignored all other people in the room.

Anyway, between Hilary and Obama... I lean more towards Obama, but wouldn't be disappointed if Hillary won. We seem to have a better choice of candidates than we did in '04!

How about Biden as Obama's running mate?

11. bmyers13790 -
Biden would make a great choice for VP! I can see it happening. Dv8or70 is right, I think, that Hillary won't accept the VP spot.

Hm, Biden would be a pretty good candidate though he'll get a lot of ribbing for the old plagiarism charge. Dodd would also do well. Both guys are older which aids in Obama's experience issue (that strategy aided Bush). The problem I have with them is that they're both Senators. Presidents come more often from the governor's chair than the Senate's chair. It might seem too insular to voters. Perhaps the governor from Montana? To help with the votes from the west?

Jill, I did a blog post about a child with a heart ailment whose mom was atheist. One of the commenters was a hands-on healer Christian. We all flew to your hometown of Denver as he felt he could heal her.

Anyway, there are over 328 comments about it. Nothing makes people type like religious discussions.

Dude, don't leave us all hanging like that. Did the hands-on healer help the child with a heart ailment?

Jill, I am a new fan of yours. I attended the Change Rocks fundraiser in Chicago. You were excellent. And, just to clarify, I am not a twenty-something. I am 54 years old and attended with my twenty something daughter.....I paid for the tickets, lol. Put Him In The Hall of Fame......you rocked the house ! Thanks for all you do in the name of honesty. I have a photo and some video of you and the rest that I took with my old Sony Cybershot. I will try to send it to you.
