Huckabee, The Gays, Predictions, And A Song

Posted Mon Dec 31, 2007 11:00am PST by Jill Sobule in Jill Sobule and The Provocateurs

I just saw a clip of Mike Huckabee on Face the Nation yesterday morning. I like his demeanor- his easygoing manner. He seems like such a nice guy.

And, he has a sense of humor-as opposed to Giuliani whose only funny moment in the campaign, so far, was wearing the red vest in his Christmas ad. It was not intentionally funny, I think. Huckabee also seems more of a populist than your average creepy greedy tax cutter. And, Huckabee did have a more humane stance on children of illegals (well, compared to the other Republican hopefuls). Although in the last few days he has flip-flopped and has become more hard line, tying the Bhutto assassination to illegal immigration.

Okay, so he doesn't have foreign policy savvy, but he can hire someone who does…like Bush did (yikes!).

So what's my problem with Huckabee?

Well, I am not usually a one-issue kind of person, but I do have one test:

How one feels about… the gays.

I think it says a lot, no? And, my stance has some leeway. For example, if I have to, I'll accept Edward's statements about not being ready for gay marriage. But he is against a constitutional amendment, as well as against job discrimination and "don't ask, don't tell". And, he is fine with civil unions.

Huckabee has gone far and beyond the usual "marriage is just between a man and a woman". Here is a good quote from 1998 that Russert brought up:

"It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations—from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia.”

I love how he compares, say, boring lesbian couples that have been together for years, to going all the way with a dead person. Here's another one from back in the 1980s where he believed we should quarantine Aids patients:

"If the federal government is truly serious about doing something with the AIDS virus, we need to take steps that would isolate the carriers of this plague..."

And another:

"I feel homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle, and we now know it can pose a dangerous public health risk."

Okay, so these are his religious convictions, and some say I need to be more tolerant. But, is that like being tolerant of Mel Gibson's dad's church where they believe that the Jews are still responsible for killing Christ?

And, I so wanted to like this man from Hope Arkansas…like the other ex-governor from Hope.

So, do any of you have any predictions for Iowa? I have no clue like everyone else, but I'll just take a stab: Edwards and Romney? No, I just can't commit.

Oh, here is a very short old song of mine on the evils of the gay agenda:

"under the disco ball "

I think we should probably get a better view on how he stands on this issue today. The latest quote that was used was from almost ten years ago. That's a long time in a person to mature, learn and grow. When he made his quote over 20 years ago about AIDS patients, we didn't know what we know now, and I bet he regrets those statements. Ten years is a long time in terms of how far homosexuality is viewed in our society. It's possible he's learned along the way like the rest of America.

That being said, he could very well still feel and think the same. I have no idea. But, I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt, and as was said in the blog, not judge him on one topic.

"I think we should probably get a better view on how he stands on this issue today. The latest quote that was used was from almost ten years ago."

Sorry, I'm not buying that. In my world, if he's a Republican he's a Republican for life. I say lets round them all up (these Repubilcants) and put them on the same desert island he wanted to put all of the AIDS patients, both heterosexual and homosexual.

Jill, I don't know if this is provocative enough, but I finally did think of a couple good slogans for the site as we discussed at the LC show that night; one of them being, "Over 1 Million Provocations Served Daily......"

Happy New Year, and hope to see you soon!

By the way, I am joking about that.

My real take on Huckabee is that while he is talking a great game, it's just that--a game. I dont HEART Huckabee. although Obama is still looking better and better; given what I saw in Sicko about Hillary Clinton.

However I do think an Afro-American or Woman President would be a great thing. I think it's time has come. It's well-overdue. Meanwhile 18 more got killed yesterday in Iraq.

There's more to life than just not getting beaten up. And when it comes to matters of the heart one can hope for respect and understanding. Love isn't a very intellectual thing, when I fall in love it just hits me and I have no choice. Love is impossible enough without outside forces tearing at you too.

I hate to say it, but I get both sides of this issue. I can not imagine how awful it would be to be in a committed long-term relationship and then your partner is hurt in a terrible car accident and their homophobic parent forbids you to go to the hospital while their life ebbs away - that is just not right. On the other hand, I know decent people who believe homosexuality is a sin (they also tell me Ghandi is in hell because he rejected Christ as his personal savior) and they feel it is their moral obligation and duty to save the souls of sinners. The problem here is you can not have philosophical eclecticism. You cannot for example , simultaneously, be a Christian fundamentalist and an atheist - no matter how tolerant one is. I think Huckabee has accepted Christ and for his personal brand of Christianity - there is no check off exception for homosexuals. So I respect his moral consistency, but I also think as President he must represent everyone and he swears to uphold the Constitution not the Old Testament. Personally, I think if he were smart, he could just say something like - "Despite my personal beliefs, It's not for me to judge someone or predict who will go to heaven since I can not read God's mind." This is a perfectly fine syntax for him not to lose the Christian vote while not alienating 10% of his potential voters. Just in case your reading Mike, I am still available for political consulting :). Jill, I do not, for one second, believe your anti-Republican rants. But I am behind you all the way in provoking dialogue and discussion. Best wishes for a great 2008 - get that new record out!

Breaking news from the Des Moines Register:

obama 32, hillary 25, edwards 24

Mike am I ranting? Hmmm, I guess a little.

Happy New Year

Oh, and one more thing (because apparently I'm long winded today): have a blissful New Year everyone.

8. jillpixy -
I am curious:

Who are the people that read this blog? Are they Yahoo readers, or people that have known of me before?

9. vincentblackwod -
Vincent Blackwood; a fan of yours for about three years. I heard "Somewhere in New Mexico" at a time when I really needed to hear that I wasn't the only person who felt so lost and isolated. I found I wasn't alone, another person has gone through that really dark place. I know "I Kissed a Girl" saved a few lives. I think "New Mexico" has saved a few lives too.
I didn't really become a tad too obsessed until I heard the live a Joe's Pub concert uploaded at your web site and read your journal; how hyper-intelligent -- what a dry acid wit. Your my hero -- my heroine -- and I mean that in the Lou Reed sense.

And how are your experiments in home cooking going?

10. jillpixy -
I am going to start this week on my cooking journey. Will let you all know

11. vincentblackwod -
Oh, do include pictures.

12. vincentblackwod -
You'll be on Martha Stewart in no time. I mean the show of course.

Hi Jill,
Once upon a time, I went to see a Warren Zevon show in North Carolina and got to hear you. That was 2000 and I have been a fan happily ever after. I have followed your career and purchased your music since then. I came here from your website link. I like the blog and think you are doing a great job. Of course, you risk the real you failing to live up to my fantasy projection, but then again I may fail to live up to yours. I would love to hear more personal stories from you - within respectable limits of course. I mean you were certainly the "it" girl for Kissed a Girl and have had to deal with the fickle finger of fame. I admire your ability to persevere and grow. I think you are still finding your voice here. I would say that your ability to be honest and vulnerable is paradoxically one of your greatest strengths as an artist. So, was Margaret a real girl and did she really end up in that video? How about updating your Kathy Lee song with Martha as new three-way memeber of your torrid love affair - now that would sell. Give her a secret love affair with Donal Trump and have her cheating on him with Rosie on the side. See it practically writes itself:).

14. jillpixy -
Margaret was real and was in an "adult" film.

For those that don't know it, I have a song about my alleged lesbian affair with Kathy Lee Gifford. I lived with her above her sweatshop, while Frank paid no attention.

I have since had an affair with a certain current Secretary of State. I shall not go further in revealing the name.

Now, I am seeing (have only gone to second base with) a certain older woman who is currently in Iowa.

15. jillpixy -
Tomson, thanks for the kind words

I am still trying to figure out this blog. It is on a music site and I am supposed to deal with more political issues. As you can see we are straying...cooking recipes. Maybe, it was a bad idea, this politics and music mix. I am not sure who these Yahoo users are. In truth, I have tried to avoid the personal (although not all that well) as I want it not to be about...me. But, maybe I have to play to my strengths. Which I guess is spinning a yarn, singing, and...lying about my affairs with famous celebrities.

16. vincentblackwod -
Tomson, you are right, your idea (an update of Kathie Lee) does practically write itself. This is my humble effort, certain not up to Jill's standards. But I like the idea of two sharks, I mean Martha and the Donald, cuddling in bed sharing a cup of Joe. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy that a love like that can exist.

Kathie Lee
by Jill Sobule

Kathie Lee's in love with me;
that's why she left the show.
Kathie Lee, she sleeps with me;
no one's supposed to know...

We'll be on Martha Stewart soon;
I don't mean the show.
Martha's cooking with Donald Trump,
In bed, sharin' a cuppa Joe.
He opens the Post -- Martha and Rosie
Doin', well, you know.
Coffee spilt, words tossed;
Gentlemen, don't call your lady a ho.

I'd love to know if Kathie Lee has ever heard the original version of the song.

Hey! so nice discussion , BUT NEW YEAR is coming, how to celetrate this wonderful day? you love to try something new? http://interracialsingleonline.com you will be surprised there

18. Honus -
I've heard the "oh he probably regrets the quarantine AIDS patients" suggestion before but I watched him on Meet the Press and the quote was repeated and he said he still believes it.

Too many gaffes for Huckabee this week. (He's crossing a picket line and doesn't know it, for one!) Romney has the organization, and I think he wins tomorrow by a comfortable margin, with Huck and McCain at 2 and 3. For the Dems, I think it's too close to call. They say Edwards has to win, and I don't think he will. Maybe Obama, Clinton, then Edwards, but all three within a couple of percentage points.

Jill, got a prediction now?

Burt
