Musicians can act, but can actors be musicians?

Posted Thu Jan 3, 2008 3:59pm PST by Jill Sobule in Jill Sobule and The Provocateurs

I have brought this up more than a couple of times at dinner parties when the conversation lags: "Can you name any actors or actresses in the last, say, thirty years who have successfully transformed themselves into good singers, musicians or songwriters?"

Most people are at a loss to come up with anyone.

Or, they come up with confusing answers like "Jamie Foxx." But was he a comedian, an actor or a musician first? I went on Wikipedia, where all the secrets of life can be found, and discovered that he studied music at Julliard. So Jamie doesn't count. He's a cool throwback to the days when actors had to also be song-and-dance men, like Sinatra.

It's easier to answer the question the other way around, musicians to actors: How about Tom Waits, Kris Kristofferson, Bjork, Ice Cube, Cher, Mos Def, John Doe and Mark Wahlberg, to name a few (Madonna not included).

But when I think of actors-turned-singers, I think of Bruce Willis, Eddie Murphy (with "My Girl Likes To Party"), Keenu Reeves (Dogstar), David Hasselhoff, and my favorite…Steven Seagal. And don't forget the tabloid-celebs-with-record-deals: Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton.

Okay, my friend Michelle has just reminded me of one actor-turned-musician whose music career has eclipsed her acting one: Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley).

I know there are more. Can you all help me?

For fun, I'll leave you with a quote from Steven Seagal:

"I don't consider any actors to be real musicians… I'm probably going to get in trouble after saying that. I think Jeff Goldblum is the only good musician."

Michelle’s note:  This post hits a little close to home for me.  In my day job as a songwriter-for-hire I’ve actually worked with quite a few of the “celebs-with-record-deals.” Maybe I’ll write about that for our next post? Also, some recent examples I thought of… Mini Driver, Juliette Lewis, Billy Bob Thorton and Jared Leto.  Oh, and I LOVED Lyle Lovett in The Player.

Jill: Michelle, will you please tell that story of the unnamed but obvious starlet with drug problems?

Milla Jovovich "Divine Comedy" wasn't a bad CD or is it a stretch to call what she does in those "Resident Evil" films acting? Yeah, you're right.

Remember, Michelle, you only get 3000 characters, good luck.

I'm not sure how the sincere, naturalistic performance of the singer turned actress in "Mind the Gap" was overlooked.

Hi Jill,

Great post, but I say check out Kris Kristofferson if you really want to see genuine talent.

This guy was born in Texas, joined the army, became a Captain and flew helicopters. He was also a Rhodes scholar and has a Masters Degree in English literature. He was going to become a faculty member at West Point when his music career took him into stardom. Given all that, I can easily forgive him for starring in Convoy (really bad trucker movie during the cb craze of the late 70's).

I am not a feminist, but I can not help but think that we are missing out on so much talent because female singers must now be hot and sexy as well as being able to sing. We could never have a Mama Cass today and what a sad commentary that is on our popular culture.

I just saw Cyndi Lauper being made fun of because of how she looks in a bathing suit. That really bothers me. She is such a talent and what a great voice. Is she not allowed to age because she's in the entertainment industry? I mean, anyone who likes Caption Lou Albano has got to be a good person, right?

Fame is la lot like bowling, we set em up and then we knock em down. I really hope someone tells these young pretty actresses to save their money and then move to Iowa to have a real life. Don't you ever miss Colorado? I mean, LA must take a toll on your soul. Luckily, you are still 21 and turn all the boys heads.

Oh my god. In Mind the Gap, it was all method acting. I knew how to play a struggling artist. I think that is all I can do.

Huckabee has just been projected to win

Yes, you were great in "Mind the Gap." I really like that movie.

There really are lots of people who went from music to movies, burt nobody the other way 'round. I guess maybe because there's no money to be made in that switch (not counting the 15-year olds who become manufactured pop stars).

A couple more names: Kevin Bacon, Helen Slater (her CD's probably as lightweight as her acting, but she's still beautiful), Kathleen Wilhoite (I remember kinda liking her CD).

Obama won. Whether he was your candidate or not, it says a lot about America now- that in Iowa, which is 90 percent white-they chose him. This is a good thing, no?

6. Richard -
Americans tend to vote for the one with the most charisma. Obama is it. Policy choices are great for political savvy folks, but it's the gut feeling that people have about candidates that moves people to vote. Let's face it, we know politicians lie and pander and we know that presidents cannot do anything without Congress first voting on the issues (well, Bush has gotten away with more than most and much more than he should) so we have to vote on who makes us feel good about the direction s/he will take. Obama is the one this year. And, yes, it's a good thing.

Maybe we need an update to the Golden Throats compilation featuring the likes of Eddie Murphy, Seagal, Bacon, and the like.

Jill, you're one step closer to singing a breathy version of "Happy Birthday, Mr.President" at the White House.

I'll second Minnie Driver, I laughed at the thought but her second album is quite nice. And Juliette Lewis is crazy therefore she can rock out...

are you going to post a Best of Whatever You Want list?

9. CaryM -
Jill, check out William Shatner's Has Been album. It is excellent. Danielle Brisebois also has two great albums, Arrive All Over You and Portable Life.

Michelle, did also mention Jason Shwartzman as someone respectable.

How about David Hasselhoff. You haven't really lived until you've seen his "hooked on a feeling" video.

Jill & Michelle,
I've got two pretty obscure ones. Some might call them a stretch, because honestly they haven't done anything commercially successful--in music, but there is Clint Eastwood and John Carpenter. Both of these guys did some pretty interesting sound track work for their films.

Eastwood's soundtrack for Mystic River is astounding--at least for me it is. He follows it up with the soundtracks for Million Dollar Baby and Flags of our Fathers. (I haven't seen Letters From Iwo Jima yet, and don't know what the music is like in that film. Is it Clint Meets East? Interesting thought.) He even took a turn to country in Honky Tonk Man, which, honestly, I'm no C&W fan, (Too Bush-like) but it wasn't all that bad. Supposedly he did some song writing in that one too.

John Carpenter, well, if you haven't heard the theme song for Star Man, well, it is a pretty interesting electronic number created on the then popular CMI Fairlight sampling synth. It's some very interesting stuff. Especially since the director actually created it!

Rick Springfield was looking for a record deal, got an acting part on a soap opera that made him famous, and eventually found success in the music business. Roy Rogers was a singer in Hollywood long before he became a cowboy movie star.
John Travolta and Dan Akroyd are fine actors, but both have sold an awful lot of records.
I've seen an clip of a very young Hulk Hogan playing guitar. I must say his guitar playing was way better than his acting ( outside the ring, that is...)
BTW, Frank Sinatra was a well-known singer well before he started making movies.
