Help me make my next record

Posted Fri Jan 18, 2008 4:59pm PST by Jill Sobule in Jill Sobule and The Provocateurs

How would you like to be an executive producer at a promising new record company (or at least buy a tee-shirt that says you are)? What about having your own theme song? Have you ever wanted to have a concert at your house with a semi-famous singer-songwriter? And…how would you like to sing with me, despite your (possible) lack of talent, on my next big hit?

Okay, I know this blog is really not supposed to be about me. I am very happy about that…really. We have been talking a lot about politics, but because this is on a music site we touch on music too (like Huckabee's views on the Scissor Sisters).

As we all know, the music biz  is in turmoil. A lot of folks are bummed out, losing jobs, and confused about what the next business model will be.  But as an artist, I find this an exciting time. We can be pioneers and start having more control of our  own careers. That's what I'm thinking.

A bit of history: I have put out 6 CDs and been on four labels –two disappointing majors, and 2 indies (both of which went bankrupt).  My personal favorite CD, "Happytown" (on Atlantic) was discontinued, and since I don't own it, I cannot re-release it. One would think that after a couple of hits ("Supermodel" and "I Kissed a Girl"), that I would be living the high life or at least flying business class constantly. But I hate to tell you…I still live like a freshman. The record deals that I signed were not moneymakers...

Now, I'm not complaining. I have been blessed and have played music for over 14 years without having to have a real job - which is a good thing because I have no marketable skills to do anything else.  And right now, I have a bunch of new songs and finally feel ready to do a next record.

The problem is that I don't have one of those nice big advances from a record company to pay for the studio, musicians, producer, marketing, publicity, etc. - much less the illegal payola.

So, I have come up with new business model:

You guys - well, fans and companionate friends - invest in me. You fund my next CD (digital release, 8 track cassette, etc.) in exchange for gifts, services and participation.

Here is the site: Jillsnextrecord.com

So far the response has been pretty great and surprising. Let me know what you guys think. I'm here to please.

Now back to Huckabee.

In prosperity our friends discover us, in adversity we discover our friends.

I am pleased and happy to be able to help you and I am selfishly helping myself get some great new music. Book the studio now and beat the Spring rush. You will succeed in this effort and please make those t-shirts in XL sizes. I think at $500.00 a donor should also get a special colored ID card that if I flash at any of your shows - you have to act like we are close personal friends and that I inspired you to write many of your songs. Man, that would be sweet.

"I'm here to please"

And you always do, thank you.

Wow, after only one day you are already 1/4 of your way to your total. I guess it isn't just tomson_1963 and I who think you rock.

In fact, Entertainment Weekly has picked up on it too;

http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2008/01/singer-songwrit.html

First they are hip enough to know "Christmas is the Saddest Day of the Year" and now this. Remind me to renew with them.

I'm so looking forward to this CD!

Now I'm off to search blogs and post annoyingly positive comments about you. Try it everyone, it's fun!

Okay, Yahoo blog readers, will get backstage passes, no matter if there is a back stage for even...$25

Maybe everyone should do this: plumbers, etc....

Gee, I hope none of the people who posted on "Letting Go of God" get wind of this. But then if they donate...

Very nice, thank you, Jill.

The description of the Gold Doubloons Level is hilarious. The funniest thing that I seen in a week. Whoever thought of that is a genius.

6. Yahoo! Music User -
I would suggest that you focus on making the best music you can. When I listen to good music, I am not concerned about Huckabee or his view on the Sizzor Sisters.

Jill, we met a few times while i was with capitol and also at your shows, would love to help, have access to studio and producer, btw, loved "mind the gap", not posting my private info for obvious reasons, t

Been a fan since "I Kissed A Girl" so I had to donate. I wanted to donate $500 so I could be mentioned in song, but had to settle for access to the secret site (couldn't you have waited til tax-refund time). Hope that Palm Springs song you sang at Largo recently makes it onto the album. Any chance the secret site will contain some harder to find Jill songs like Queen of Spades or Almost Fell (hint, hint)?

A diamond level but not one for pearl? Tisk, Tisk.

Almost $25,000 already. I bet you're sorry you didn't turn to your crazy, funny, smart fans and friends earlier, Jill.

10. jillpixy -
Well, dangerousbeauty, tell me more.

So, for all you guys out there strapped for money (in this wonderful economy) don't feel pressured to donate. Pass it on to one of your more well-heeled friends.

Wouldn't it be great to start a site for other artist to do the same thing?

11. madmod1234 -
Just want to mention how funny it is that Texas is #1 in money donated so far.

What happened to the Neil Young message from Michelle? Now you see it, now you don't.

Hey Jill! I'll be sending what little I can afford to contribute to your new album, soon, but since I can't give you as much as I wish I could, and I have a sizable readership on my blog, I have you a big, phat plug to my audience here: http://city-of-dis.livejournal.com/515837.html

I hope it helps, and as always, keep up the amazing work, you saucy goddess you!

15. Marc-Anthony -
No problem, Vincent! I've been meaning to do a write-up about Jill for some time now and with the advent of her drive for the new album, this seemed like the perfect time. It's also just my (admittedly tiny) way of paying Jill back for the years of life enrichment her music has given to me and mine. :)

16. Yahoo! Music User -
What's up Jill? I don't really know your music at all but I think the whole "Help me make my next record" idea is great. Why shouldn't artists ask fans for their help? I mean, we're the same ones downloading all that music for free. We should be more than glad to help.

Also, I see that you joined the Steve Hoffman forum. Good luck with that. That forum is like an online Star Trek convention for so-called audiophiles. Ignore the ones who question your donation move, they're the same ones who donate their money to keep the very wealthy L. Ron Hoffman's site running.

Oh, and when there is an actual woman posting on their forum, they really don't know how to react so expect some weird comments. The only women they're used to are in their avatars.

Cheers.

P.S. It's a cold winter in Denver this year, eh?

Jill,
We met years ago in LA. I am a film and TV composer and also produce. Have a studio. Would be happy to help. www.richandgigi.com.
Take care,
Rich

Juliana Hatfield has had some modest success with the honor system @ her website for music which I believe helped fund a release.

Tell 'ya what, stick "Queen of Spades" up for d/l and a paypal link next to it and I'd pay ya 15 bucks just for that one song!

19. dangerousbeauty4you -
Jill, I sent you an e-mail to your e-mail address at "info@jillsnextrecord", please get back to me as per your request to talk more. It also looks like between Rich, myself, other fans, friends and family as well as the other artists that I have worked with in both the music and film industry, we can get your next "CD'S" produced, distributed and sold in record setting time, no pun intended but a bit funny nonetheless. You can e-mail me at "dangerousbeauty4you@yahoo.com" and then I can give you my private e-mail and other contact info. Look forward to hearing from you personally and musically. All the best, t
