My Halloween Song On NPR today: "Women Whose Halloween Costume is Just That They're Slutty--That's Not a Costume at All"

Posted Wed Oct 31, 2007 10:29am PDT by Jill Sobule in Jill Sobule and The Provocateurs

I was  again the guest op-ed troubador on NPR's  The Bryant Park Project. Here's the NPR link and song: "Women whose Halloween Costume is Just that They're Slutty--Well, That's Not a Costume at All"

Here's the lyrics--remember I only had one day to write the song. But I meant every word of it. Oh, also check out my pal Eban who brought in his Theremin:

Halloween was my favorite holiday but in these last few years

Something so terrible has filled me with fear.

It's not the razor in the apple; no I heard that never happened

No, it's something much worse

It's women whose Halloween costume is just that they're slutty

That's not a costume at all. What happened to Witches and monsters?

They left the Halloween Ball

Just putting kitten ears  on your head is not creative.

A skimpy black dress is not very scary--unless you're Ann Coulter

Stiletto heels are not that special unless worn by a man

I'm not a prude, but I'm not a fan....of

Women whose Halloween costume is just that they're slutty

That's not a costume at all. What happened to Witches and monsters?

They left the Halloween Ball

Okay, maybe if you play a dead prostitute from say Jack the ripper days or maybe a zombie whore from outer space. But the naughty devil outfit in lingerie? Well, that's...just not good.

What was your best or worst costume ever.

In first grade I was Joe Namath, quarterback for the NY Jets

Bad or good?

I love the song. Just the comment about the witch Ann Coulter would nail the song's meaning.

Jill - could it be you've noticed this much more since you moved to LA? It's pretty chronic problem here. That said, one of my best Halloween costumes was I went as a Frat Boy In Drag As Carmen Miranda. Had a fruit hat with bear cans on side, lots of details. Looked absurd and was least slutty girl at party, fully of leotarded Kitties and Foxes... and yet I wound up going home with one of the hottest guys there. Oh the irony...

(Big fan, like the song... very "Sunrise/Sunset"...)

Oh - and hard to go wrong as Joe Namath.

Great title! Very funny, as usual.

I think if someone dresses slutty for Halloween then they MUST be scary the rest of the year....great song as usual!

Great lyrics! Hope to hear you sing them soon!
I made werewolf costumes for my sons when they were little. I thought I was very creative when I ripped T-shirts and sewed furry fabric to peek through the slits. I even made them wolf ears to wear on their heads Then a kid at their school turned to them and said, "What are you? Care Bears?" We were all crushed. So much for scary.
