Video Interview: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, 1998

Posted Thu Nov 1, 2007 11:42am PDT by Dave DiMartino in Led Zeppelin's Return Flight

In 1998, Y! Music's predecessor LAUNCH traversed to New York City for the privilege of a rare sit-down video interview with Led Zeppelin founders Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.

Page and Plant--who'd already reunited a few years earlier for the No Quarter album--had just finished making their Walking Into Clarksdale album and were noticeably enthusiastic about it. Surprisingly talkative and very open about their work with Led Zeppelin, the duo were a charming and a highly entertaining interview. Check it out!

This was basically a great interview BUT leading into the end of it, it started breaking up like I had a poor dial up, sad!

I've rocked for 40 years. I hope my bros will kick rock up to a higher level of depth, departing from the filth that is plunging our music into the grave. I enjoyed the intelligence of the interview. ROCK!

I have been a great fan since the beginning. I still have old archives of musical interviews on VHS tapes for this band. Once again they are the ultimate duo in rock and roll, Robert Plant is an overwhelming vocalist, and Jimmy Page is THE BADDEST guitarist on the planet. I wish I had the opportunity to attend the show, ROCK ON GUYS NO ONE DOES IT BETTER THAN CLASSIC ROCK!

Don't think I agree with all that's been said. First off, I love Zep as much as the next guy, maybe more. I have everything they ever did, saw them twice live in the 70's and saw Plant on his Now and Zen tour. But.... to say there would be no rock and roll without them is a bit off. There was rock before them, rock during, and rock after. So you mean ..... Jimmy Hendrix and the Stones and Pink Floyd and The Animals, The Yardbirds, Bachman Turner Overdrive, and Mountain, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, and The Who and Cream and Aerosmith, and The Doors, Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy) and Steve Miller Band and The Ramones and Black Sabbath, Santana and on and on ... didn't exist or weren't really that influential? Wow..... that's strange... and lame at the same time. Zep was great and they were excellent musicians. Their biggest contibution, I believe was their uniqueness and creativity. They "helped" start heavy metal and, unfortunately, glam rock hair bands. No.... there would still be plenty of rock without them. Sure Jimmy page was a very good guitarist, but was he the best? I don't think so. Was he better than Hendrix, or Clapton or Jeff Beck, or Mike Bloomfield or a number of other great guitarists? I watched an excellent DVD of a Zep concert last night, then one of a Gary Moore concert. Whoa!!!!!!! Moore blew Page away as a guitarist..... but, Page was unique and had a great mind for creative licks. I love them and hope they tour again.... but I have plenty of other rock to listen to, both pre and post Zep.

I have seen Robert and Jimmy in concert three times, I love them, but they are getting old and so am I. I hope that they do tour again but I don' think that it will happen.....not in the USA anyway. I do have a variety of music that I listen to now, since I have gotten older but nothing compares to the Rock and Rollers, Robert, Jimmy, John, and John Paul.

U know...When I was a college kid in Waco, TX I found a "Led Zeppelin" album {cassette tape in those days} while browsing thru the A to Z Rock Section in a music store. I liked the cover and the names of the songs, so I bought the tape. On my way home, I plopped it in my car stereo. Before the first song was over I had the windows rolled down the volume "cranked up" and was feeling like somebody SPECIAL! Head's turned!

I told everyone this band will be FAMOUS and they said..."No way"!

And look where Lez Zeppelin is today!

All I need to say is...UNBELIEVABLE! Jimmy & Robert went as "deep" as possible with their inspirational writings and spontaneous ideas that sounded & looked so incredible that the words ROCK, CLASSIC ROCK, or HEAVY METAL may not be good enough for them. Jimmy, Do not ever go away! We all love you. LED ZEPPELIN: Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, & last but definately not least, John Bohnam are absolute LEGEND!

17. Lionel -
I can't believe it, LED ZEPPELIN is toguether. LED ZEPPELIN will live forever! Thanks Jimmy, Robert, Jonh P., & Jonh B. for these memories.

18. CHUCK -
Hey, garytpiaa, I am certainly glad that most of the people that grew up with Zep and other great "classic rock" bands are not nearly as closed minded about "new" rock as you seem to be about the classic artists who paved the way for music to expand into a plethora of rock genres, many of which are listened to and appreciated by us old "hippies" for their ability to seriously rock...Having said that, I bet you're going to be a ton of fun at 50, provided you're obvious "angst" sic, doesn't do you in...Growing old is inevitble...Growing up is optional!

19. Steve -
Led Zeppelin Rules! Greatest band ever
