Five Guys Who Should Be Dead BEFORE Kevin DuBrow

Posted Mon Nov 26, 2007 3:17pm PST by Rob O'Connor in List Of The Day

You expect to hear of rock stars dying. Consider the lifestyle. Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. It's not what how my doctor advises me. So when we read of the sad passing of Kevin DuBrow, the singer for Quiet Riot who made the guys in Slade millionaires a second time with his cover of "Come on, people now, feel the noise with me," we got a twinge of sadness and a sense of how can it be? He didn't seem like someone who should go this way.

Consider this: if Keith Richards makes it to 70, that's 113 to you and me. If he makes it to 80, that's 140.  I'm not sharing my algorithm on this, but I will submit a list of people who mathematically--and by all logic--should have died before Kevin DuBrow.

Keith Richards - Naturally. I know, I know, after a nuclear war, cockroaches and Keith Richards will survive. Keith will see the radioactive glow and assume it's the stage lights telling him it's time and he'll mangle the intro to "Start Me Up" as we all wither and die horribly.

Bob Dylan - Have you ever watched the D.A. Pennebaker documentary Don't Look Back?  Did you ever count how many cigarettes Dylan smokes in the span of 90 minutes? Multiple that by 40 years and tell me how he isn't carting around an iron lung?

Pete Seeger - No, not Bob Seger. That other guy that Springsteen made famous. Seeger's an old folkie, so that may be part of it. Folk music kills the people who hear it, not the people who perform it. They apparently live to be 200. The rest of us die with a hammer in our hand. Which we would gladly use if it stopped someone from singing folk songs.

Neil Young - Epilepsy. Brain aneurysms. Onstage Neil Young flits around like a guy determined to throw his back out. Watch any electric performance with Crazy Horse where the tempo rises above ‘3' and figure out how Young doesn't smash his head into the amps.

B.B. King - You've seen him doing those diabetes commercials? Diabetes kills people mercilessly. People who stay home and carefully monitor their sugar intake. Have you ever eaten road food? A week of it can kill healthy people. I want to meet B.B.'s personal chef. This is one disciplined musical hero here. The man performs constantly. The wear and tear would kill lesser men YEARS AGO. If he makes it to 100, we don't name a day after him, we name a MONTH.

I really never liked Quiet Riot or bands like them, but here are some things I considered before I nostalgized??? Kevin Dubrow. I grew up going to the Starwood seeing him and Randy and he was not very nice up and coming. Though Randy and I went to "rival schools" here in Burbank, his clearly being the more priveledged, he was very excepting of a lot of people and never had an additude. Later in the mid 80's, a freind of mine approached Kevin to give him props and he told him "Don't hustle me, man." My freind unlike me actually admired him. I never liked Slade, but was a huge fan of The Dolls and met David Johansen in between the Dolls' period and the Buster Poindexter thing. In contrast, I was invited to hang with him for an entire weekend after a show in LA. I also knew Nikki Sixx, the guys from London and Lizzie Borden who's music I also did not like, but had lots of fun playing Asteroids with them. So, I have to say whether I like the music or am nostalgic about a particular part of my youth, it can really make a difference as to who someone is to me before I think of who they will be when theyre gone. I would never wish harm on anyone or want them to not live a full life. Just human observation.

it's obviously never a good thing when someone died before his time, but everything I have ever heard about Kevin Dubrow was negative. I heard from many ppl who'd met him or knew him that he was not a nice person AT ALL. Also the Quiet Riot Behind the Music on Vh1 made him look like a total jerk. Perhaps this is karma? Who knows.

But Bob Dylan IS carting around in an iron lung these days -- it's called an "Escalade," I believe.

B. B. King now has to sit in a chair when he performs. I thought you would have listed Brian Wilson, but is he really alive or just conscious at times?Eric Clapton should have kicked the bucket on many a day. I read his autobiography and he said he once did a show while laying down on the stage. Eddie Van Halen must have a guardian angel since he used to fall all over the stage and nevr keeled over and hit his head.

Kevin Dubrow had one way to do things. His way. Everything else was probably seen as wrong in his eyes. He had a mouth that wouldn't stop. But he was honest in his eyes and never backed down from anyone at anytime. Most people now a days can't see much past that. But those who did, knew a very good guy.

any cause of death posted yet?

I'm also surprised not to see Nikki Sixx on here...with all that drug addiction and hitting rock bottom (after hearing the content of his book). Of course I'm glad Nikki is OK but I am surprised that Kevin beat him to the pearly gates.

I'm reporting this article as abuse AND stupid. How about some real news about how Dubrow died, as trojet1964 suggested. Suggesting a genius like Neil Young should be dead first is sickening and ignorant. Young took better care of himself. So did B.B. Ever heard of genetics?

Whether Dubrow was nice or not, I wish him peace. I remember Whitesnake opening for them in concert in the 80's: what a show!

I had the honor of speaking with Kevin Dubrow, at least four times over the past 5 years. He was always friendly and considerate. I don't know how he was in the glory days, but I can tell you that at the five QR concerts I have been to, Kevin and all the guys did a meet and greet. I go to alot of shows and very few bands bother to come out and talk to the fans. Quiet Riot was part of the soundtrack of my youth and, kevin will be missed by many....including me....He was truly a real ROCK STAR...

Being now a born again Christian, I used to jame to Quiet riot and rudy sarzo and kevin dubrow. They brought youth to crazy HSchool and college kids. I hope that those who rocked the kevin died will find a lesson in eternal life with Jesus Christ, not idols of rock 'n' roll. Life is too short, God bless Kevin's family.

i met kevin years ago here in akron and met all the guy from qr and were very nice guys and they gave us back stage passes to get autographs for me and my buddies and pictures he will be missed

I remember QR very well. Metal Health was the first cassette I ever got. I do remember Kevin as a person who spoke his mind truthfully, he was at peace with his own honest words that offended many just ask the guys from Hit Parader whom Kevin reminded us all he would keep some copies by the toilet for extra wiping material! I miss the man and I never met him- God bless all who read this and any who mourns someone in death. I will remember Kevin forever, and I will miss the music of Quiet Riot with the voice that was unmistakable. Keith
