Scott Weiland Goes Solo: The Interview

Posted Tue Dec 9, 2008 1:21pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Maximum Performance

What can we say about Scott Weiland that hasn't already been said? Since his days in Stone Temple Pilots, he's been the subject of much media scrutiny. In the grungy '90s he was the music press's number-one punching bag, accused of being a poor man's Eddie Vedder (and those were the good reviews). Around the time of STP's excellent and adventurous third album, Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop, and Scott's lushly Bowie-esque first solo album 12 Bar Blues, that all changed. Weiland finally began to receive the critical acclaim that had long alluded him...but then the media focus quickly shifted to his personal life, as battles with his two off-and-on bands (STP and then supergroup Velvet Revolver), his wife, and his drug addiction became standard tabloid fodder.

It's understandable, then, that Scott was somewhat guarded when he sat down for his recent Yahoo! Music interview, hiding half of his face behind a wide-brimmed fedora (albeit an extremely stylish one) and a shroud of ever-present cigarette smoke, and choosing his monotonic words extremely carefully. Clearly this is a man who likes his music to do the talking. But luckily for him, the music on his long-awaited, 10-years-in-the-making second solo album, Happy In Galoshes, speaks volumes about this troubled artist's talent. It's an elegant, glamorous affair featuring contributions by Paul Oakenfold, members of No Doubt, and longtime collaborator Doug Grean, and it even includes a surprisingly solid cover of his idol David Bowie's "Fame." So whatever is going on in this guy's personal life, it's certainly providing inspiration for him creatively.

Here's Scott's aforementioned fedora-topped, tight-lipped interview, along with three exclusive performances of songs from Happy In Galoshes shot in his own private studio in Burbank, California:

He needs to go back to STP or VR.

He should stick with making music with Stone Temple Pilots.

He does remind me slightly of Bowie now that you make mention of it. Don't know what it is exactly, but I have always been drawn to him. Starting with STP and thru Velvet Revolver.

4. Yahoo! Music User -
scott, you effin rock

Anyone that thinks these songs are mediocre are stuck in the land of mainstream repetition. Ever since Tiny Music, Weiland has taken on a wholely indie sound (and when I say indie I mean true indie). Every artist in a band has a sound of their own that they want to express but in order to keep the group happy, lots of compromises must be made. His solo stints are just him doing what he wants to do. We should all be so lucky. Trust me, if and when the man signs on with another band their sound will be very different from just his sound.

Oh, and as to the comment of Scott reminding tina of David Bowie, he most certainly does. If you ever get the chance, look at some old pictures of him from the days of Core and Purple. The resemblance is scary. Doesn't help that he's just as out there as Bowie either. ;)

I'm sorry but his voice has lost a step. I saw him in Boston/Foxboro, and he did 1 STP song, Interstate Love Song, and his band sounded poor in my opinion. He wants to be a Bowie, but he's way off, and Bowie was fine for the 70's generation, but not this one. Stick w/ STP Scott, and stay off the coke.

I think scott needs to stay with stp.
he is much better with them or vevlet revoler

This is some of the best stuff I have heard in a while! I love Killing me sweetly. Everyone needs to STOP comparing this to STP and VR! It is completely different!

I love his new stuff!

I'm really digging the new album.

I love Killing Me Sweetly! My favorite song on the album by far! Wish they showed most of the band though.

I agree.

Shut the fuk up with the bull [profane] about how he needs to go back to STP. His new album is awesome. Give it a chance and get the Scott Weiland/STP image out of your mind. Scott Weiland is a great musician, period. He was great with STP and now he has hit his stride with the solo stuff.

Please stop comparing to his other bands...'cause you can't.

Weiland is one of todays BEST performers and he surrounds himself with talented musicians. It's pure art and true music. Can't say that about Nickelback or any of the other mediocre bands on the radio these days now can you? Weiland is a legend and the new album is a great addition to the great music he's done with STP and VR and I hope he continues making real music.

I love scott but he is a rocker and needs to be screaming this balls off. Please make another STP record!

16. Laurie -
Excellent east coast shows. Keep doing what your doing. It's great.

Scott is doing absolutely great as a solo artist. I think "Happy" In Galoshes is going to be big. I saw him at the first 3 shows on this tour and he rocked. I have video posted on you tube under user LODIJOYCE. He is a great artist. Anyone with any criticism, look in your own closet before you go into someone else's. He's fine on his own so when he's touring don't be yelling STP .... this is his stuff. He did say there would be an STP album coming out. Wait for that.

I pee my pants for Scott Weiland.

19. Jennifer -
HUGE FAN, but man I think this sounds way out of key and generally not for his voice. God take off his clothes and let him scream for the love of Santa Farts!!!

i agree with tina. and i think he should go back with stp.. they are just so amazing all together..
