Scott Weiland Goes Solo: The Interview

Posted Tue Dec 9, 2008 1:21pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Maximum Performance

What can we say about Scott Weiland that hasn't already been said? Since his days in Stone Temple Pilots, he's been the subject of much media scrutiny. In the grungy '90s he was the music press's number-one punching bag, accused of being a poor man's Eddie Vedder (and those were the good reviews). Around the time of STP's excellent and adventurous third album, Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop, and Scott's lushly Bowie-esque first solo album 12 Bar Blues, that all changed. Weiland finally began to receive the critical acclaim that had long alluded him...but then the media focus quickly shifted to his personal life, as battles with his two off-and-on bands (STP and then supergroup Velvet Revolver), his wife, and his drug addiction became standard tabloid fodder.

It's understandable, then, that Scott was somewhat guarded when he sat down for his recent Yahoo! Music interview, hiding half of his face behind a wide-brimmed fedora (albeit an extremely stylish one) and a shroud of ever-present cigarette smoke, and choosing his monotonic words extremely carefully. Clearly this is a man who likes his music to do the talking. But luckily for him, the music on his long-awaited, 10-years-in-the-making second solo album, Happy In Galoshes, speaks volumes about this troubled artist's talent. It's an elegant, glamorous affair featuring contributions by Paul Oakenfold, members of No Doubt, and longtime collaborator Doug Grean, and it even includes a surprisingly solid cover of his idol David Bowie's "Fame." So whatever is going on in this guy's personal life, it's certainly providing inspiration for him creatively.

Here's Scott's aforementioned fedora-topped, tight-lipped interview, along with three exclusive performances of songs from Happy In Galoshes shot in his own private studio in Burbank, California:

Nobody is perfect and so is Scott. I think we all need imperfectness as a tool to find out who really love us and being able to accept us for who we are and be comfortable with it.
Scott's song and album are not for us to criticized or tailormade for our taste, it is a piece of art being expressed by the artist for you to feel. You feel it or you don't. No good or bad..And i admired him most of all for his guts..being able to express his thoughts that is the most important while many others under their shell swallow up their guts and criticized the works of others..Scott, i hope u will find ur path..dont be lost ..your boys depends on u..PEACE n LOVE

Does anybody know what STP album the song Samba Nova is on? I have it on my Myspace profile but have no idea what album it's on. By the way, Scott Weiland is God and he can do no wrong. Excellent album.

Go Scott.... You sound a little [profane]ty in this performance.. but I love the new album

As weird and wonderful as always.

He sounds alot like David Bowie, and I would know I'm 32! I think it is cool and very artsy-original. Love the red fedora Scott... makes a statement without any words at all! Love all your music!

Gonna burn out my Nano !!!! Can't stop listening to this man's new album. It's awesome stuff. Get "Happy" In Galoshes today for someone's Christmas present. I can't tell you how great this album is.

Scott is amazing. Happy in Galoshes is amazing. The sound quality of these videos suck - he is amazing live. I'm so glad to finally see him happy and proud of fathering his own music!! I can't wait for his KC show!

Boston loves Scott! WBCN plays his jam all the f'ing time and I love it.

Keep it up, Scott. F*** all the critics that [profane] on your album (they probably didn't even listen to the whole thing). The critics [profane] on you for "Core" and that didn't do that shabby.

Rock God. No denying it.

Pz,
Chris

WTF, Love ya your a gifted singer BUT!!
Please go back to STP or VR...

52. Yahoo! Music User -
I think those who say Scott should go back to VR or STP are sorely misguided! He's a brilliant and innovative solo artist who continues to be highly underestimated. Unlike some people have stated, Scott's voice is on key during ALL songs, although the acoustics in Missing Cleveland seem problematic for a reason which can't be blamed on SCOTT. I can't say enough about this album. The storytelling tempo of Big Black Monster is positively riveting! Scott's vocals are impeccable on Killing Me Sweetly which is also a beautifully melodic ballad. Missing Cleveland is an infectious rock delight!

All naysayers can basically go to HELL in a BREADbasket (handbaskets are too refined for your negative nature....lol)

First: I can agree that Scott may have not performed his best in these videos. Second: of course, this is a different story to STP and is hardly comparable. But it needs not that kind of comparison. It's right that this is Scott's own staff. And third: I haven't got the album yet, but feel very much like buying it (2cd edition) as soon as possible cuz it promises to be very intersting!

I am really trying to figure out what the people who are calling this mediocre are listening to certainly not what I just heard. Scott is amazing if you don't get him go back to programmed radio friendly music. His range and talent are unbeleivable and his voice is better than ever,

55. SKI -
He needs the coke...did better music on it...his first solo album blew and so does this one...well not all of it...its not that bad but has done better work.

56. Mudd -
he should be proud. He has and will always be an amazing talented artist~much love for Scott Weiland

57. Joyce -
I think Scott is a very talented artist who is doing a great job as a solo artist. Sure Velvet Revolver was great when he was with them. Sure Stone Temple Pilots was and is great with him in it. This is solo work which in my eyes is fantastic. Anyone who is expecting STP or VR with this album, forget it. It does have a Velvet Revolverish "Hyper Fuzz Funny Car" for those who may want to give it a listen. It's Scott's work so respect him as the artist he is and give him the credit that he deserves. This album has been a long time in the making. If you like it ... enjoy and maybe go get the CD. If not, keep the comments at bay and remember to look in your own closet before opening someone elses. Remember if you don't have anything nice to say ... don't say anything at all. Happy Holidays!!

58. Tina -
I love Scott. He needs to work something out with STP. This new stuff stinks!

59. Amy -
i love it all stp vr or alone

60. Laurel -
Completely fabulous!
Scott--keep on singing. What you're doing is nothing short of amazing. Lovely.
Your music brings to mind the beautiful melodies of Badfinger, or Mott the Hoople. The only thing I'd advise is not to become tragic by dying an early death. You deserve better. We await better.
Much love to you...
