U2: The Y! Music Interview, Part 1

Posted Mon Mar 23, 2009 10:07pm PDT by Dave DiMartino in Maximum Performance

What's helped propel rockers U2 to the very top of the pop heap?

Never doing what any record company has ever told them, says the band's superstar lead vocalist, Bono.

"Our music is truly independent--we've never had a record label ever tell us what to do," the singer recently told Yahoo! Music. "We once had a record executive come [into the studio] in our early days to a recording. We played him 'Sunday Bloody Sunday.' And he said, 'Great song, could we lose the "bloody?"'

"And so we never invited anyone back."

Getting some personal time with U2 is by no means an easy task, but Y! Music was fortunate enough to catch up with the band recently when they were in the L.A. area following the release of their latest album, No Line On The Horizon.

In fact, the interview came after an extraordinary amount of high-profile appearances by the Irish quartet, starting with a conspicuous opening slot on this year's Grammy Awards show, a once-in-a-lifetime command performance during the week of President Obama's inauguration, a week-long stint of appearances on Late Night With David Letterman, and an early morning gig on Good Morning America.

Good humored and genial, Bono, the Edge, and Adam Clayton sat down with us on the balcony of a suite at Hollywood's famous Chateau Marmont hotel, as traffic buzzed on Sunset Boulevard below and the crisp wind provided a clear view of the L.A. skyline. Many topics were discussed, and between the three of them, the band members showed an intelligence and warmth that was wonderful to witness.

Joked the Edge midway through the interview: "Our world view is such that, really, no one should disagree with us. Anyone who does, it's their problem."

Here's the first of a three-part interview with three well-balanced and fun loving men who--in their spare time--play music in the biggest rock ‘n' roll band in the world.

They are the best band!
Their new album is classic U2.
Those that don't like the band will leave bad comments in order to trash the band and their music. Here's the deal. I 'm not fond of Eminem or the rap culture, but I don't seek out to trash it or try to be cute with an anonymous rant.
U2 is very relevant and their music pleases those who like rock music.
It's great to see the band still making great music and supporting causes that make a difference in people's lives.
Rock on!

No Line on the Horizon is a polished sampling of every album U2 has recorded from Boy & Octover to The Joshua Tree and Rattle & Hum to Atomic Bonb, ONLY BETTER! U2 will not go quietly in to the night thank God! Genuine musical genuises they are! GOD BLESS U2!!!!

6. Rez -
Boots may be the worst song on the album---get past that, and its truely breath taking

Their music truly comes from within, very spiritual and heartfelt. I've been a fan for a very long time, I absolutely love Under a Blood Red Sky, it is stirring and hypnotic. That next to the Joshua Tree, truly amazing and beautiful.

no line is absolute genius! always their music is so fresh, intelligent. i was reading the words to the songs and realized...this was literature! i know it's not meant to be reading, but in doing so, the depth goes places only a man like bono could take you. the music, voice compliment each other. i wish i could thank bono for writing breathe.

13. Angi -
God Bless U2 for standing out, as a great band with morals to boot. Keep God first!

14. LL -
U2=awesome
don't ask why -- their songs say it for them

15. Mick -
U2 has lost their edge... they are okay but their hits are long gone.. the best albums were the Joshua tree and achtung baby... then they are like 1 or 2 hits per album.. Beatles are the top band..

Wow I'm surprised only 13 comments so far. I have seen U2 every tour since the Joshua Tree Tour and I'm Irish lad just from the south side of Dublin. I've met the Edge and Adam outof pure luck when they entered the place I worked at in Ireland Bray Co. Wicklow Bono lived there and I had been a fan anyway but they are in a way messiahs and if you have never seen them live then now with this album would be the time. It is sanctious to be in the same room as them even if you share it with 80,000 other people. I remember the feeling I got when I saw Pope John Paul II in Phoneix Park Dublin with 1.25million people in 1979 as an 11 yr old I have only witnessed that same exultation since then at a U2 concert so if its Croke Park, Boston Garden Gillette Stadium Fleet Centre thats a small crowd but you will come out and say Amen! Someone at there first U2 concert said to me "it's almost religious" and who am I to lie? Oh and every one should join the ONE campaign, look it up Thanks peace "I have spoke with tongue of an angel"

You people need to stop drinking the U2 Kool-Aid.

Here's to U2: the second-most overrated band of all-time... right behind Led Zeppelin.

18. monkee -
Biggest band in the World , not even close.

Went and saw the Joshua Tree tour with my friend, Tibor, at Rosemont in Chicago. I still say it was the best concert..out of the hundreds that I've been to...that I ever saw. Seeing them live was just ..beyond words. They are awesome.
And a note to Tibor: We're back in Chicago...and hope you are well. We pray for your safe return...and that of all our troops fighting oveseas at this time.
