Alice In Chains: Unplugged & Unchained

Posted Tue Nov 24, 2009 4:47pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Maximum Performance

Very few bands survive the departure of a lead singer--Van Halen is one of the few that come to mind--and even fewer are able to carry on after a singer's tragic death (AC/DC is one of the few success stories there). When singer Layne Staley, of the iconic Seattle band Alice In Chains, passed away inĀ 2002 after years of drug abuse, surely most fans assumed that that was the end of AIC--and that if AIC ever did choose to reform without Layne, they would never be able to recapture their former glory.

However, Alice In Chains came roaring back this year with a new singer, William DuVall (also of the band Comes With The Fall), and their first studio album in 14 years, Black Gives Way To Blue (the title is a dedication to Layne, and the title track actually features Elton John on piano). And incredibly, it was like they never left. The album debuted on the Billboard chart at number five, and garnered critical acclaim for being just the right balance of old (their signature sound is still intact, partially thanks to co-singer Jerry Cantrell's unmistakable harmonies) and new (William never tries to mimic Layne karaoke-style, letting his own voice shine through).

After AIC's triumphant return against colossal odds, Yahoo! was honored to have the group come into the Y! studio to perform acoustic (it was like the days of their 1996 Unplugged album all over again), and perhaps even more honored that the band was willingly to so frankly discuss their trials, tribulations, and tragedies. Check out their interview and very special performances below.

Layne is one of my favorite vocalists ever, & AIC is one of my favorite bands,so in spite of the absence of one of the greatest rock vocalists, I am so happy to see them carry on...we'll always love you Layne !!!

5. David -
wow. One of the best bands ever.

6. greg j -
Great job of remembering Layne, glad the rest of the guys are still going. AIC is one the best groups in last 20 years and needed to go beyond where they left off. Good for them!

7. TracyS -
AIC is more than Layne it is all of the guys. The new album is great. All of the songs are exelant. William is a great addition to the band. Waiting for them to come to the Poconos. RIP Layne.

8. Rick H -

Glad to see Jerry sing lead on this new stuff he has always been a great singer. It was he's voice as much as Layne that made this group the two them singing together was one of the best things about AIC.

I didn't think I would be sold on AIC w/out Layne but I was won over. In many ways William has once again freed me to listen to the old AIC that I couldn't after Layne...and now I can listen to the new stuff too and I'm loving ALL of it all over again.

Loss is always painful, no matter how small when you Love.
Welcome back, you were very much missed. And I will look forward to all your work with great anticipation.
Black on Blue is a beautiful tribute to your friend. I am sure he is smiling and with you in Spirit today.

16. MaryLou -
Forgive me in my misquote on the title, I meant of course
" Black Gives Way To Blue "
Take care of each other, and best wishes

Wasn't a die-hard fan of AIC back then. I occasionally listened to them just as i occasionally listened to ABBA or Soundgarden. I liked their songs but i wasn't that interested in them.

I didn't even know that the singer died until i heard the band was coming out with a new album. I checked out the new guy and fell instantly with his voice. Then i saw them over the summer and they blew me away. I liked the old AIC's songs but i now love them with William singing it.

I figured out what it was that kept me from being a die-hard fan. The songs were great, but i didn't like Layne's voice all that much. I love the songs more with William singing them. I also enjoy watching their performances now. I feel kind of guilty for that. I wish the best for Layne's family and for the fans who loved him.

18. Jim -
Alice is still Alice and still in the Chains making music! and listening to their music in the past" make layne spirit still alive... so no matter what' AIC still the best!

19. Robert -
I remember seeing AIC for the first time on the clash of the titan's tour in the early 90's loved em ever since!! The new material rock's,and so doe's du vall!!

20. JESSES -
unfortunately the heroin that made Layne sound so good and feel so deep also did him in, in a way he gave his life for our musical enjoyment. he will be missed in life but will live on forever in the music we still listen to. Cantrell's solo work was very good and i enjoy listening to it but the harmony between Layne and Jerry was much of what made AIC so good. the new stuff sounds pretty good from what i've heard and i'll go buy a copy sometime soon. Thank you for what you've given us, RIP Layne.
