SXSW '08: Daryl Hall Or Nothing

Posted Thu Mar 13, 2008 2:10am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Maximum Performance

Some people may think that going to see SXSW 2008 keynote speaker Daryl Hall perform at South By Southwest is some sort of indie-ironic inside joke. Like, "Ha ha, won't it be funny to see that old has-been who sang 'Private Eyes'?"

But I'm dead serious when I tell you Daryl Hall is cooler than pretty much any skinny-jeaned, hoodie-shrouded band du jour playing SXSW this year.

There's a reason why the Gym Class Heroes named their most recent trek the "Daryl Hall For President '07 Tour" and are working on a Hall & Oates mashup album. Or why Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go For That" has been sampled in about 4,987 hip-hop songs. Or why Daryl gets people like KT Tunstall and (of course) Gym Class Heroes MC Travis McCoy to guest on his online music/talk show, Live From Daryl's House.

It's because Hall & Oates--and by association, the duo's chief songwriter, Daryl--are just plain friggin' cool. No joke.

Never was this more clear than when Daryl performed a free, 40-minute concert at the Austin Convention Center on SXSW's kickoff night, Wednesday. Sure, the audience had its more-than-fair share of mom-jeaned frumps and graying dads in golf caps and Hawaiian shirts...but the crowd actually largely consisted of copiously tattooed hard-rockers and scrawny scenesters with Danny Noriega hairdos. And everyone was singing along, almost kumbaya-style, to "You Make My Dreams Come True," "Kiss On My List, "Sara Smile," and "Maneater."

(FYI, Daryl scored extra cool points for altering the lyrics of the "Maneater" chorus to: "Whoa-oh, here she comes/Watch out boy, she'll steal your song/Whoa-oh, here she comes/Her name is Nelly Furtado." Classic!)

Anyway, let's just see if 99.9 percent of the bands playing SXSW this year are similarly uniting the rock 'n' roll masses with their music at, say, SXSW 2028. And we'll see who's laughing then...

Truer words were never written! Daryl uses his writing and performing genius to highlight and encourage some of today's most promising talents. Hooray for Daryl! I have renewed faith in the future of popular music. You've got to see livefromdarylshouse.com with Travis McCoy. Now I'm a fan of the Gym Class Heroes too!

It's called talent! And loads of it!! They had it then. And it hasn't changed!!

Daryl Hall has more talent in his little fingernail than 99.9% of the current "popular" musicians, singers, songsters, hipsters, or whatever-the-heck-else you want to call them. Not only does he sing, and play, and write, and produce his own music . . . it's good music. How many other musicians out there can say the same??? Yeah, I thought so.

What happened to his songwriting partner Kix Brooks?

I've been a fan of Daryl Hall all my life. He is by far the most talented musician and singer. For those who don't agree then you have no appreciation for music.

that's good that he and Darryl are still singing. alot of your 70's or 80's singers are not singing or doing something else. but some are singing and still have that same voice when they were hot and younger. but he does good looking for being in his mid - 4o's or so. I hope that they and other singers from the past come to Milwaukee for a big 70's and 80's reunion because I will make sure that I will be there.

He has always been cool in my book. You go boy!

Way Cool! I saw Daryl Hall blow the roof off of a club and turn it into a rock n roll church. His live performances are for real.

I lived by the Abandoned Luncheonette in Pottstown, Pa where Daryl is from. That was the early album cover. I only got to see him sing the National Anthem at the '93 World Series in Philly.

I have listened to H&O since I was 9 years old. I will never stop loving their music, because it was about positive stuff. If a 9 year old can listen to it believe it will last a lifetime. Their music will stand the test of time because they talk about real things, important things that have relevance: love, pain, sorrow, joy and you can dance to it =)! Just hearing music that was around when I was a child gives comfort and takes me back to a time when things were slower and truer to who I want to be.
