Michael Jackson Tribute - Huh???

Posted Wed Jul 8, 2009 11:46am PDT by Danny Eccleston in The MOJO Blog

Glitzy sendoff leaves a bad taste in Danny Eccleston's mouth.

While this is still the official period of mourning in which it is not permissible to say bad things about Michael Jackson, can we be the first to ask of yesterday's tribute gig: What in the world was that all about?

If the vision of his not-always-supportive family dressed up in the shades 'n' glove uniform and faking the solidarity they could never manage during his lifetime was not weird enough, what will be the lasting (further?) damage to his poor kids--Prince Michael, Prince Michael II, and Princess Michael Of Kent (or whatever she's called)--of this garish and hypocritical wake-cum-PR-circus, this tribute to their father and (frankly) all the money he made for lots of people once upon a time?

While you'd need a heart of stone not to have appreciated Stevie Wonder's intense performance--at least he knew MJ, if anyone did--and, bless her, Jennifer Hudson did well, the rest of it was mind-boggling, a buildup of encomia to Jackson's character and generosity that at no point felt convincing or heartfelt.

The worst was Al Sharpton, talking Jackson up as if he were Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King combined, and not the merely supremely talented musician and singer he undoubtedly was.

The purple-prosin' pastor highlighted Jackson's role in the creation of 1985's famine charity single "'We Are The World' long before Live Aid," creating the erroneous impression that Jackson was way ahead of Bob Geldof and company, who'd released "Do They Know It's Christmas?" months previously. It was typical of the day's hyperbole, which had the general effect of burying Jackson's actual achievements under a shower of specious garbage.

The irony is that what Jackson really lacked in his lifetime--some basic respect and sympathy as an actual human being--was denied even in death. Instead, the crowd were worshipping--yes, worshipping!--a glove and a golden casket. It was the kind of sendoff you'd expect of a mad dictator (except mad dictators usually end up gibbeted in public, like Mussolini, or shot in a car park, like Ceausescu). Perhaps Kim Jong-il was taking notes.

Meanwhile, there were no recollections that suggested that any of the speakers had really communed with the much-vaunted "love" that Jackson had for the world in general and his black brothers and sisters in particular. L.A. Lakers legend Magic Johnson's keynote speech revolved around the heady revelation that Jackson was fond of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Far more instructive was Johnson's obvious amazement that MJ would have indulged in anything so normal.

In the end, you have to ask, who was this spectacle for? For Jackson, looking down from above (everyone present seemed pretty sure he was "above")? For AEG, whose TV income will presumably defray some of the lost profits from the now-moribund O2 Arena shows? For the Jackson kids, just in case they might for a second have wondered if their father's death was the start of something resembling a healthy ordinary childhood? Or for father Joe Jackson, whose controversial governance of the Jackson brood was praised by all and questioned by none?

In death as in life, Jackson was the canvas on which the circling carrion-birds projected their desires: for love, fame, money, and copy.

Next up: the "revelations", fact and fiction, with no way of telling one from the other. After all, you can praise the dead, or bury them--or both--but one thing you can't do is libel them.

Meanwhile, our favorite Michael Jackson tribute was by the inmates of this Philippine prison...

Overall the MJ tribute was one of the best I have ever seen. Personally I did not like him but that is my personal opinion. I think his family sent him off the best way suited for him given his renowned status in the world.

After reading several comments I am disturbed about how much hatred people can have for one person. Stop believing everything that you see on t.v. from the media. None of the cases could not be proven. MJ is human just incase you have forgotten. There is no need to be so judgmental towards Michael. The society actually buys into all the make believe gossip that the media sells. Anyway, I thought that the Memorial service was very touching. The man is gone and people are still talking about him. Please let him rest and have some kind of respect for him and his family. Wouldn't you want the same thing if you were in their shoes? They are the ones who are hurting more. Have some kind of respect for this man and his family. People need to listen to the words in his music and do research about what he has done for the nation as a whole instead of focusing on the negative things that the media persuaded the society to believe. He received more support from other countries than he did in America. That is a sad thing. RIP Michael you will never be forgotten.

Most of you are phonies, who were never really Jackson fans to begin with. While I for one didn't follow his music, I feel he was a tortured soul who should have been treated better in life instead of this insanity they conducted at the expense of the tax paying citizens of LA. The Jackson family should be paying for this "show", too many people are out of work in LA and the mayor needs to step up and force the Jackson's to pay up, after all they have money. I think the only Jackson's who were actually close to Michael and truly cared were Janet and his mother. The rest are just greedy selfish family members. As for his father, he should never have been allowed within 100 miles of the memorial. I agree with some of the comments in the blog, however be more sensitive about how you treat the children. They are innocent victims here. I for one just hope they can have a NORMAL life. I did cry when Paris was on stage. Poor girl, now she can have a mother figure, when she needs one the most.

First and foremost this was spoken very well like a true nazi.
This is a classic case of another lonely whiteboy who sits from the side line and writes whatever comes to mind. Well Danny you are no different than Parez Hilton earning a living writing about a life, love and impact on the world you will never have. The fact of the matter is as fake and phony this was makes no difference a man passed away and he has such a impact that people lined the streets to pay their respects. I am sure how small of a indie or right wing great american u are when u die and move on I am sure a handfull of people will be there place a small floural arrangement at ur feet and say goodbye and you small MOJO Blog will fade into the night and will not be regareded as a great piece of work like MJ. Gee Whiz......You are suppose to say positive things for a funeral. I am seeing from SOME of YOU people is a bunch of whining and complaints. The Man died!!!!!! I respect the Man and his music. Not the lies told about him. !!!!

Danny Eccleston......Did Michael Jackson do something to you? You are taking it way to personally!! Do you think Michael went one day thinking about Danny Eccleston......yet you blog something so insensitive about a man you have never met.

Shut up!!

This blogger is definitely not Black. Perhaps he should study Black culture and learn how we handle funerals and memorial services. Then, he'll see why the MJ Memorial Service was not a 'tribute show.'

I love this!! I didn't see it until I posted my comment....very well written.:

One of the most important things a person should ascertain, before engaging in an exchange via missive's, is if the individual on the recieving end is interested in an exhcange of opinions, or if the person is merely using an opportune moment to inflame an emotional situation with rhetorical nefarious entendres. After googling your name and finding nothing, except this list of movies where it appears, if this is you, you carried a gaff, I have decided that my initial response to your blog was not necessary. Your inability to make the decision to use this space to write about something you enjoyed today, instead of to use it to regurgitate opposition to an individual who is deceased, speaks volumes about your ability or inability to find something else to write about. You typify the internet.

I completely agree with this article. It's exactly what I've been thinking. Again, like when he was alive, people are trying to make money off of his death and it's sickening. I was probably one of the few who didn't even watch the memorial service because I just felt like all it was going to be was a spectacle and not at all respectful towards Michael which is what it should have been. And I think letting his kids speak at the memorial service was completely inappropriate because they're just children and should be allowed to stay that way until they're not children anymore. Instead they're being thrown into really what is an adult situation instead of just being allowed to have a normal childhood. I feel the most sorry for his kids because there is no way they're going to have that.

He gave millions of his own money to charities around the world even the good ol usa. Why don't these athletes/celebrities/musicians who have more money than they could ever spend consider giving a tenth back. They can change the economy by creating programs and getting people off the streets through worksourcing. They can still have the lambos and the castles while creating a legacy in their name long after their passing. Greed will stop this.

First and Foremost...this blogg about the memorial is crap!!!! Your statement of "Merely supremely talented musician and singer he undoubtedly was." disrespects the significant role Mr. Jackson has bestowed not only on the entertainment industry but on the lives of many people around the world. He was not only a great performer, but he was also a huge humanitarian, donating huge sums of money to numerous charities. How many other high paid performers do you know, that have donated that amount of money towards a good cause. I think it is very pathetic for you to down someone who has done so much more in their life-time than you will ever do in yours. You should show your respect to the Jackson family and fans by blogging about the positives aspects of the memorial service. Please remember, Michael Jackson’s name, talent and legacy will forever be remember, but will yours Mr…? I do not think so.

Glad to see another hater who WATCHED it...lol Thanks!

cant believe that L.A. has to pick up the tab for the memorial service, I always am and will continue to be appauled at how celebs. make money off of fans but aren't willing to spend any of it on or for them. I didn't watch the memorial I thought he was a flake like most celebrities, and I'm never willing to spend my hard earned money on anything that helps them be bigger flakes self admired people.(magazines etc) lets move on to bigger news. Like America's hungry children.

Mr. Eccleston,
Obviously you are young, immature and have not experienced much of LIFE. This "not so supportive" family as you call them is an average normal family. We all have issues with our family members. We have disagreements, arguments and sometimes take them to court. The Jackson are no different. We all criticized Michael for alot of things while he was alive just as we criticize other celebrities while they are alive - but as with anyone - when they reach an untimely death - all previous things are left behind and put in the past and we begin to look at the good they did and focus on the our loss. I hope that if you someday have an untimely death that people
"assume" that you are 'above' and that they will focus on all your 'good' and not stand at your memorial service and mention the money you didn't pay someone back or the times you let your friends down or the times you cheated on people or the bills you didn't pay - Oh I'm sorry I don't know you so why would I presume to make judgements about your life or the people that would memorialize you. Maybe you should stick to topics you actually know about, because LIFE is not one of them.

Someone who lived the lifestyle as he didn't shouldn't be celebrated. A nice entertainer, sure. But his personal life and actions is the legacy I will remember of him. Not some short sighted celebration

I enjoyed some of the memorial and I agree with Tiff that at memorial services in America the deceased is ususally overly glorified. That's pretty normal. What I thought was absolutley rediculous was how MJ was compared to Martin Luther King and made into this kind of savior for black celebrities and black people all over America. I was so tired of hearing all that. He was an excellent entertainer, friend, father, celebrate those things. For goodness sakes the man turned his skin whiter than mine (and I'm Irish), nose ended up smaller than mine, lips are smaller and hair straighter. Black Savior????? Shame on the people at the memorial that used him for there own purposes, to hear their own words. I thought that what his daughter said was the most real and most touching. He was a daddy and she loved him and he her.

117. Yahoo! Music User -
I dont care what kind of taste it leaves in your mouth. Who are you? i thought it was the most awesome memorial i have ever seen. i dont have a whole lot more to say to you than that. It was very touching and well deserved . Thought it was even too short it should have lasted all day.. So you my friend are an idiot....

118. margrette -
yOU ARE AN IDIOT. IF YOU CAN'T FIND IT IN YOUR JEALOUS MIND TO SAY SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT MJ, JUST SHUT UP!

The sad thing is for the past 25 years or so Michael Jackson has been ridiculed and been made the butt of many jokes. He was obviously only respected when he was a one man song/video hit machine. In the later years, with his obscure behavior and lifestyle he was shunned by his own family, fans and the media (remember the dangling baby photo?). Yes, mourn and pay tribute but to go so far as to compare him to Martin Luther King Jr. is just insulting. I gew up watching the Jackson 5 show, lived on theirs and Michael's music and feel he was a suberb entertainer. Michael lived his life the way he wanted to (mostly in seculsion) and I wonder if he is now shaking his head about the (unwanted) attention which is just shy of a circus.

Look all you idiots, it goes like this. Michael Jackson was the first African American televised on MTV, brought the masses together in whatever he did. He lived his life, was generous to a lot of people, he gave and he gave and he gave. His memorial was befitting for a king there should have been more singers, entertainers to lend a hand. But it was dignified. Say what you want about the Jackson family, if they never came together in life, they truly came together in death and represented Michael. The gloves they wore, the suits with the yellow ties and everyone in black. They were hurting as a family and in their time of grief, they still found the time to share him with the world. Get over it, move on, he will forever live. Hell ya saw Elvis everyday for 20 years, he had demons as well. See he stole his steps and his sound, Michael invented them...He was a talent that no one can truly understand, he was a genius that touched millions through song and dance and he was a father by any means necessary....But one thing we all know, he was also human... So to all the haters, please stop hating, get a life, get a job and if by chance you are able to touch even 1/4 of the people that he has touched in your lifetime and become rich and famous-lets see if you can handle the fame before the fame handles you. What other people do you know was in the business as long as he was, sold more records and outdanced them all....Nobody but, MIchael Jackson-THE KING OF POP
