Guitar Hero Must Die!

Posted Fri Dec 19, 2008 4:40pm PST by Mick Farren in The MOJO Blog

The new generation of music games are sounding a widdly-widdly death knell for rock 'n' roll, argues MOJO's Mick Farren.

Saturation yuletide advertising has finally convinced me that virtual music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, in which participants attempt to "play" classic metal solos by following flashing light sequences on guitar-shaped plastic peripherals, pose an even greater threat to the future of rock 'n' roll than Simon Cowell.

For confirmation that these games are an unpleasant victory for short-attention commercial exploitation, we need look no further than a South Park episode titled "Guitar Queer-o," in which Stan and Kyle become Guitar Hero heroes, and, when Stan's dad attempts to teach the fourth graders to actually play a real guitar, Cartman scathingly responds that "real guitars are for old people."

What's being exploited here is as old as rock 'n' roll itself. Few of us have not, at some time in our lives, or perhaps as recently as this morning, played clandestine air guitar or posed in front of a mirror pretending to be Elvis, Jimi, Joe Strummer, or even Joe Satriani. But the global electronic game corporations who have co-opted this youthful narcissism into a competitive game of manual dexterity, with plastic reproductions of Gibsons and Fenders, are having a negative impact on music's future. OK, so we tolerated Tom Cruise dancing around in his underwear to Bob Seger in Risky Business, but enough is, culturally speaking, enough.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band broaden the perceived gulf between performer and audience by pandering to the most juvenile extremes of rock 'n' roll idol worship. Worse than that, they betray the great populist promise of rock 'n' roll--which has held good from the days of The Shadows--that any garage band with a set of cheap instruments and perfunctory chops can achieve icon status if it gets the breaks and is sufficiently relentless.

Equally unpleasant is the unseemly rush by many of our current guitar "heroes" to lease their music for inclusion. Among the shameless are Aerosmith, Metallica, Motorhead, AC/DC and the Sex Pistols, while The Beatles and the Jimi Hendrix estate are reportedly ready to deal. Whether or not this is more heinous than flogging one's songs for TV commercials is open to debate, but the basic absurdity is underscored by the song "Thunderhorse" by DethKlok--the fictional death metal band from the U.S. TV cartoon show Metalocalypse--being incorporated in Guitar Hero II.

At a time when musical education in schools has become a cause célèbre, the promotion of video games that offer nothing more than a closed loop of virtual experience, devoid of creativity, does nothing to help. A spokesman for the game makers has claimed that they teach "sensitivity to rhythm, as well as develop the dexterity and independent hand usage necessary to play the instrument," but this seems disingenuous when the games do nothing to impart the real fundamentals of music.

And just to add injury to insult, an outfit called Mad Catz in San Diego, California will retrofit a perfectly good Fender Stratocaster, replacing strings, pickups and fretboard with the input controls for Rock Band.

Is nothing sacred?

I suppose there are two sides to every story, but I'll start with this question: how many people that are against the game have even played it? Try the game out first before you critize. Moving on, this game has actually started kids asking for guitars of their own. Stores were even selling actual guitars to play on that were taught using the color coding that kids already were familiar with. Past that, I grew up with most of the songs that are one these various games. Instead of just beating the game, I actually gained a collection of new artists to enjoy--new as new they are current bands...Matchbook Romance, Kaiser Cheifs, and AFI to name a few.

Perhaps not the best learning tool out there, it opens up a whole new world of music to younger generations and without the use of violence. Not such a bad vechile after all.

oh plz. what's happening to rock music as a result of these games is no different than what's happening to other forms of music, particularly hip hop and rap. It's being lifted into the spotlight and exploited. There's some good from it. There's some bad from it but it's up to the "real" advocates of these musical genres to uphold the authenticity and cultural sustenance of their beloved music. As we move into the future, everything is at risk to be ostracized and rock music is no different. Just hold your own and keep it moving instead of being just like those old farts who fear change.

The problem is instead of learning to play the guitar kids spend hours playing the game. I have no probelem if they realize it's just a game, but when people think they can play guitar because of the game...

That South Park episode was great (even though it aired a long time ago). When the kid was playing "acoustic" guitar hero I about died.

ITS A GAME. GET OVER IT. If you dont like it, fine. if you do, fine. WHO CARES. you people all get pissy about the "downfall" of rock and roll... LOOK AROUND YOU. Do you SEE what they call rock these days? all of the bands on the radio sound the same, and the new "emo" wave of music is pretentious and cookie cutter. I personally think its great that the kids playing these games are hearing stuff that an older generation enjoyed, and if they are really into it, theyre going to check out other stuff by the same artists. oh, btw, its Guns N Roses. if people want to be posers, let them. whatever.

At least it's teaching them something and it's NON VIOLENT. I'm sorry, kids shouldn't be playing Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War, GTA, etc. How their parents buy it for them is insane. There's a reason why those games have the MA tag on most of them.

At least it teaches them something about music and is NON VIOLENT. How parents by kids games like Call of Duty, GTA,Gears of War, et al is beyond me. Those games are rated MA for a reason folks. They aren't ment for kids. At least the music games are something that a family can get involved with. Kinda likea karioke machine. They're great party games too.

agreed on all levels!

Great music will always be appreciated as great music. I hate the games Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but you can't take a video game and cartoon and cry the death of Rock 'n' Roll. People with the passion or desire to learn and play the real thing, will; others will play video games. You should bank on what you can while you can, getting your music out (even through a video game) is why people get into the music industry.

Rock Band and Guitar Hero have become premier party games. If people liked you well enough to invite you to parties, you'd get what all the hubbub is about.

What ever douche. If you don't like, don't buy/play it.

Seriously ! Guitar Hero is a complete sucess in most people's point of view. You all should get a life not going around accusing the things other people has made. Alot of work has been put into guitar hero and you're all throwing away you're chances. Well At Least Some People Still Stand Up For Something They Believe In. Im Not One To Criticize The Work That Th Others Have Done !
Shame On All You GH & RB Haters ! :(
