Guitar Hero Must Die!

Posted Fri Dec 19, 2008 4:40pm PST by Mick Farren in The MOJO Blog

The new generation of music games are sounding a widdly-widdly death knell for rock 'n' roll, argues MOJO's Mick Farren.

Saturation yuletide advertising has finally convinced me that virtual music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, in which participants attempt to "play" classic metal solos by following flashing light sequences on guitar-shaped plastic peripherals, pose an even greater threat to the future of rock 'n' roll than Simon Cowell.

For confirmation that these games are an unpleasant victory for short-attention commercial exploitation, we need look no further than a South Park episode titled "Guitar Queer-o," in which Stan and Kyle become Guitar Hero heroes, and, when Stan's dad attempts to teach the fourth graders to actually play a real guitar, Cartman scathingly responds that "real guitars are for old people."

What's being exploited here is as old as rock 'n' roll itself. Few of us have not, at some time in our lives, or perhaps as recently as this morning, played clandestine air guitar or posed in front of a mirror pretending to be Elvis, Jimi, Joe Strummer, or even Joe Satriani. But the global electronic game corporations who have co-opted this youthful narcissism into a competitive game of manual dexterity, with plastic reproductions of Gibsons and Fenders, are having a negative impact on music's future. OK, so we tolerated Tom Cruise dancing around in his underwear to Bob Seger in Risky Business, but enough is, culturally speaking, enough.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band broaden the perceived gulf between performer and audience by pandering to the most juvenile extremes of rock 'n' roll idol worship. Worse than that, they betray the great populist promise of rock 'n' roll--which has held good from the days of The Shadows--that any garage band with a set of cheap instruments and perfunctory chops can achieve icon status if it gets the breaks and is sufficiently relentless.

Equally unpleasant is the unseemly rush by many of our current guitar "heroes" to lease their music for inclusion. Among the shameless are Aerosmith, Metallica, Motorhead, AC/DC and the Sex Pistols, while The Beatles and the Jimi Hendrix estate are reportedly ready to deal. Whether or not this is more heinous than flogging one's songs for TV commercials is open to debate, but the basic absurdity is underscored by the song "Thunderhorse" by DethKlok--the fictional death metal band from the U.S. TV cartoon show Metalocalypse--being incorporated in Guitar Hero II.

At a time when musical education in schools has become a cause célèbre, the promotion of video games that offer nothing more than a closed loop of virtual experience, devoid of creativity, does nothing to help. A spokesman for the game makers has claimed that they teach "sensitivity to rhythm, as well as develop the dexterity and independent hand usage necessary to play the instrument," but this seems disingenuous when the games do nothing to impart the real fundamentals of music.

And just to add injury to insult, an outfit called Mad Catz in San Diego, California will retrofit a perfectly good Fender Stratocaster, replacing strings, pickups and fretboard with the input controls for Rock Band.

Is nothing sacred?

guitar hero is 4 people who r too lazy to even learn to play the real thing

It's for FUN!!! and it introduced a lot of kids to music they otherwise wouldn't have heard, and inspired some children to want to play musical instruments. My child has.

Lighten up...It's just a game. I suppose Monopoly must die and everyone go directly into the Real Estate business. Yes I play a real classical guitar, Guitar Hero, and in a couple days, Rock Band 2!! Party on, Wayne!

OMG, get over it... if anything these games are making the old songs known to a NEW young generation and is making kids want to learn to play the real things... keep watching cartoons for information and you'll soon need to find a new job.

as a musician and drum major at my high school, i like guitar hero and rock band. Most of the kids at my school like this because you can play songs that you like and it gives you the satisfaction that you get when you get five stars on a song. Most people wouldn't want to play a song because that would involve them to work hard and learn how to play the instrument and spend alot of money on amps, guitars, drums, LESSONS, etc. it also has down sides. kids should learn through musical preference who made rock and roll and the current music genres.

THe fact of the matter is that both sides are right, there are great attributes and downsides to the whole thing. but lets be perfectly honest, i play rock band and i can assure you i am not playing @ homeon a friday night master-bating...i play with my girlfriend who loves it! and a few other friends as well, one of which is a bass player. its all alot of innocent fun and hey if the fat cats can capitalize on it....what are we so dam upset about? that we didnt come up with it first! that makes more sence.

Well, I suppose if a person was not talented enough to learn to play any instrument, then
GH and RB would be right up their alley.
Did anybody ever play air guitar out there?
GH and RB is the same thing, just pumped up..
I don't know, if ya wanna rock, rock any way you can..

I agree and disagree with the points made. The problem isn't with GH, it's with games period. "Gamers": a title given to game addicts to legitimize the countless hours of falling into a black hole known as tv. They say that kids today have exceptional hand-eye coordination. That's great, but the trade off is that they have no interpersonal skills, no communication skills, and no imagination to resolve issues or to write their own songs which is why I believe most music today is just cloned. I have no problems with games or GH - it's the number of excessive hours that kids devote to it. Everything in moderation.

And as far as the name calling: calling someone a moron or a doush is a great way to advertise your age - you kids can't have a discussion anymore. You just fly off the handle and resort to calling someone a name. This is going to be a tough world for you if you can't sit and have a decent conversation without spewing out vomit the second someone disagrees with your opinion.

when i first played guitar hero. the very first one. it made me want to learn to play a real guitar. and what did i do. went out and bought a real guitar. and what do i do now? play guitar very well. so, i believe you are wrong.

if all u hav to do all day is sit around and play useless worthless guitar wanna-be games, get off the couch you've been sitting on, buy a real guitar\bass\drums whatever, and get lessons. thats how u really rock.

Way too many overreactions up in here. Now I see more clearly why video games carry such a stigma. Gamers are just a bunch of idiots wasting time thinking they accomplished something by mastering GH. To a point, yes, there is a sense of accomplishment. But it's still just a form of entertainment.

And don't get me started on you elitists. If anything, you're taking out your petty frustrations on some kid who can shred with a plastic guitar and loves the Sex Pistols (but only one song - the nerve!!) In actuality I'd wager that GH and RB have introduced a lot of people to music they never bothered to listened to before. Not to mention pick up and learn a real instrument after playing the game.

These game manufacturers will do ANYTHING to make money and will stop at NOTHING to convince you that you need it. As far as this joke of a game making more kids interested in playing an instrument, well if you don't have the natural born talent then no amount of game playing is going to help.Face it building up a kids expectations with farce such as this only to have the reality that they have no musical talent is cruel and can have lingering detrimental effects. I played air guitar when I was younger and all that I had was a sound system and my own imagination which served and serves me well, I had NO NEED for an expensive fragile game to help me, one can learn to be better without the crutch of a game. Lets face the facts, games are for people without lives and those who so lack imagination that they have to resort to silly childish mental piffle!

this guy is an idiot
RB and GH are awesome!
before playing them i never even thought of playing a band instrument
I now play an acoustic guitar and ive also discovered some amazing songs and bands from it so fuk this author and everyone who agrees with him

Greg...The Beatles DO NOT SUCK!! It is obvious that you HAVE NO COMMON SENSE AT ALL YOU TWIT! Grow UP! The Beatles are responsible for the modern music genre and have produced MORE HIT MUSIC than any punk, grunge, rap, alternative, country or soul group EVER!! And quit disrespecting we older people WITH REAL MUSICAL TASTE! If I were your father I would make you listen to the Beatles until your ears bleed! you need some schooling kid!I feel sorry for you!

76. aydreeahnah -
Guitar Hero actually motivated me to learn the real instrument, yano?

77. Yahoo! Music User -
It is just a toys. Kid who are interested in music are going to learn how to play an instrument no matter what ! The kid who is not interested in music will never learn. These games like guitar hero are just for entertaiment and not learning divises of music

This is a rediculous article, quit being so one dam sided. I see some of your points but. I actually had no love for music at all until rock band. Now I play the "actual" guitar and drums, I also now have a huge music collection. All this started when I started playing with my friends. Now I have found bands I haven't heard of before and inspired me to start playing a real instrument as well. GH/RB is meant to inspire people to listen to music and enjoy it in a way they have fun with. Quit being a pesimist and find a better use for your time.

I agree with "Dude" whole-heartedly.

I like both games. The author of the blog is a tool, citing some very obscure references. Probably failed out of Faith No More "Epic" on easy. I discovered some songs I had never heard of because of these games, I have several on my iPod because I enjoy the songs.
Doesn't matter, anyway.
