Did 'Dancing With The Stars' Insult Lil' Kim?

Posted Tue May 5, 2009 2:29pm PDT by Justin Mathews in Musictoob

Did Bruno go too far when he called Lil' Kim a "tramp?"

Lil' Kim, rapper and Dancing With The Stars contestant, is no stranger to criticism.

But many think judge Bruno Tonioli may have crossed the line Monday night from "tough judge" to just plain "jerk." If you missed it, the comment came after Kim and partner Derek Hough finished an elegant waltz.

Bruno, after saying he thought the other judges' favorable scores were due to "medication," ripped into Kim.

"You try to be a lady, but you're more comfortable being a tramp," said Bruno.

Many across the country were stunned--including Family Law attorney and marital expert Vikki Ziegler. What did the women's advocate and founder of DivorceDating.com have to say for Bruno?

"It was inappropriate and uncalled-for," said Vikki.

"I think he should issue a public apology. I think it sends a really poor message to women. [Lil' Kim is] in a competition, and her outfits, her behavior, are all 'it's a show!' I mean, isn't that what it's about?"

Ziegler explained to Musictoob what Bruno really meant.

"Calling her a 'tramp,' or 'looking like a tramp,' says to...young women, who want to be stars, want to be rappers, that somehow her behavior in a dancing competition evidences a lack of morals. That's what he was trying to say, and I think it was disrespectful and inappropriate."

The second dance of the night for Derek and Lil' Kim was the salsa; a dance that saw the return of what Kim called the "Bionic Booty."

But, perhaps anxious to begin damage control, Bruno gave a standing ovation to the pair as soon as they finished the sizzling Latin number--with not one mention of "unladylike" behavior.

The couple scored three nines, for a total of 27, on the salsa, making Kim one of the longest-running musicians on the show--easily beating out Belinda Carlisle and Chuck Wicks.

Musictoob exclusive: See Dancing judge Carrie Ann Inaba try to rap

Musictoob has exclusive, behind-the-scenes video of Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba showing off her rap skills.

In the video, a promotional clip for Dr. Scholl's For Her, Carrie Ann Inaba introduces her on-set dance partner, then after a "blip" she raps: "Here she is/She's gonna give you some good/dance/shoe/tips!" and throws up a "sign."

To be fair, Carrie Ann says she's "obviously not a rapper." Luckily Lil' Kim wasn't there to turn the tables on Inaba and critique her hip-hop skills.

Chicago with comment number 5. Your a racist dumb ass.

24. Joe B -
Bruno was trying to be funny and clever, nothing more. It was a play on words based on the Disney cartoon. The only one be rude and racist are the people here. Get a life and piss off.

THE REMARK DIDN'T BOTHER ME AS MUCH AS LIL KIM BEING VOTED OFF THE SHOW, SHE IS BY FAR BETTER THAN TY MURRAY.

26. Kimberlie M -
Oh PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bruno was not being disrespectful of Lil Kim. He was mearly commenting on the dancing NOT her personally. He should NOT appologize! If the critics watched the show more often they would know that it is not the first time the term has been used and Bruno is not the first one to use it. Bruno isn't my favorite judge either, but let's be fair. As for TY, HE is what this show is about. Take a NON dancer, and make them a dancer. Obviously he has a large fan base who want to see him continue.

27. TLT -
I think he meant that she danced trampy. Not that she was a tramp. He just used the wrong words.

But her being voted off the show was WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!

28. Christina -
Well it is good that all of the 1st time views are leaving - good bye. The only reason you watched the show was because of Lil Kim - then you missed all of the other seasons where other dancers got 'insulted' by one or all of the judges. Tramp to Bruno means sexy. He is not American. What about when Sabrina was eliminated? Oh wait you didn't watch that season because there were no blacks on that season... Right who is the racist now???

Wow - how low will you go to say the white man is holding the black woman down. Get the facts before you use the worn down Race Card - but when that is all you have to use - guess that you will use it to death.

Geez get over it - that is so 2000 and LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well......I think he knew when he said it, that he "said that outloud". My opinion is, he called her tramp, as that is the name she has made for herself. Do I think she can dance? yes. But anytime you have ounces of semen pumped from your stomach?............there's just not a good way to look at it. Now, I wished that she would have just defended herself by saying, "now Bruno, if we pumped your stomach, I'm sure you'd have semen in it too!" LOL

I can’t believe that Lil' Kim got kicked off the show. She was way better than Ty every week and every dance. So for this country bull riding non dancer to beat her out is wrong all the way around. I figure that he made it through because of his wife. Lil' Kim got the shaft for no good reason. And if Ty makes it to the final two then I will know for sure that this show is fixed and no real good dancers will ever be choosing (which Ty isn't).

Bruno did not mean it as an insult...he even said so when he saw Kim's and the audience's reaction. He meant that Kim was more comfortable doing a dance that showed her earthy and sexual side, rather than one that was supposed to be refined and elegant. She can move and shake...the waltz (and dances like that) are not her forte. That is what he meant.

32. Yahoo! Music User -
This woman spent years creating an image as a tramp, and as soon as someone calls her one everybody flips. It was a poor comment, and i like Kim but this is an image of her own creation.

33. PHOENIX -
What the ...... is wrong with him, I think those judges sit there and get to much of a swollen head . He ia in my bookan idiot and will always have that role .. How dare he use any word of that nature andcall him self a PROFESSIONAL AT ANYTHING..

THE PHOENIX.

34. Maharlika -
What she does outside this competition is just that: outside. She has been nothing but graceful here and Bruno's social inteptitude is appalling. It shows lack professionalism.

35. Maharlika -
I find it remiss that people can't seperate her professional persona to the one that's on the show. She has been nothing but elegant. That doesn't give Bruno the excuse to say things like that. I'm no longer watching the show.

36. Maharlika -
I am no longer watching this show. The fact that people excuse his behavior is terrible.

37. a smiley fan -
no he was having fun,can we say derick, come out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

38. old dog -
i think she conducted herself very well after the comment.. i was a bit surprised at his choice of words. anyhow, where is Lil Kim ANY DIFFERENT than all the other women contestants AND pros.?? They ALL do and dress and shake the same as she does. i feel bad for her. to me, the real problem is the judges. Len is cool but it's time to lose the other two. Ty is still there because viewers LIKE him. Melissa or Gilles should have gone and Lil Kim should have stayed. i don't think i'll tune in next year unless they change some of the unfairness and some of the judges.

39. tayshun s -
LIL KIM DID GREAT!!! WE ALL KNOW WE LIVE IN THE UNITED STATES!!! ITS NOT THE JUDGES WHO WANT HER GONE, WE ALL KNOW WHO WANT HER GONE. WHY IS THAT TY GUY STILL THERE...WELL WE KNOW THE REAL REASON WHY HE IS STILL THERE! I THINK REALITY TV IS A WASTE OF TIME.

40. jeanie -
I don't think Bruno meant anything by what he said. I think he was just trying to be funny. We all know after lil Kim did that waltz the way she did that she is certainly not a tramp. I just can't beleive she was voted off the show. It is certainly not judged by talent. The cowboys wife needs to keep her comments to herself. I don't think that he would still be on the show if it hadn't been for his wife comments this week about Melissa and the way the dancers were judged , if they were unable to be there. If she wasn't going to dance in the show like she was suppose too at least she could have kept her mouth shut. Then again her husband is still on the show and Lil Kim is gone.
