Did 'Dancing With The Stars' Insult Lil' Kim?

Posted Tue May 5, 2009 2:29pm PDT by Justin Mathews in Musictoob

Did Bruno go too far when he called Lil' Kim a "tramp?"

Lil' Kim, rapper and Dancing With The Stars contestant, is no stranger to criticism.

But many think judge Bruno Tonioli may have crossed the line Monday night from "tough judge" to just plain "jerk." If you missed it, the comment came after Kim and partner Derek Hough finished an elegant waltz.

Bruno, after saying he thought the other judges' favorable scores were due to "medication," ripped into Kim.

"You try to be a lady, but you're more comfortable being a tramp," said Bruno.

Many across the country were stunned--including Family Law attorney and marital expert Vikki Ziegler. What did the women's advocate and founder of DivorceDating.com have to say for Bruno?

"It was inappropriate and uncalled-for," said Vikki.

"I think he should issue a public apology. I think it sends a really poor message to women. [Lil' Kim is] in a competition, and her outfits, her behavior, are all 'it's a show!' I mean, isn't that what it's about?"

Ziegler explained to Musictoob what Bruno really meant.

"Calling her a 'tramp,' or 'looking like a tramp,' says to...young women, who want to be stars, want to be rappers, that somehow her behavior in a dancing competition evidences a lack of morals. That's what he was trying to say, and I think it was disrespectful and inappropriate."

The second dance of the night for Derek and Lil' Kim was the salsa; a dance that saw the return of what Kim called the "Bionic Booty."

But, perhaps anxious to begin damage control, Bruno gave a standing ovation to the pair as soon as they finished the sizzling Latin number--with not one mention of "unladylike" behavior.

The couple scored three nines, for a total of 27, on the salsa, making Kim one of the longest-running musicians on the show--easily beating out Belinda Carlisle and Chuck Wicks.

Musictoob exclusive: See Dancing judge Carrie Ann Inaba try to rap

Musictoob has exclusive, behind-the-scenes video of Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba showing off her rap skills.

In the video, a promotional clip for Dr. Scholl's For Her, Carrie Ann Inaba introduces her on-set dance partner, then after a "blip" she raps: "Here she is/She's gonna give you some good/dance/shoe/tips!" and throws up a "sign."

To be fair, Carrie Ann says she's "obviously not a rapper." Luckily Lil' Kim wasn't there to turn the tables on Inaba and critique her hip-hop skills.

Hello! She is a tramp. She's only famous because she used to have sex with Biggy. She started out as a groupie. It just goes to show, ANYBODY can be famous.

42. Sweetie -
Good riddance. I didn't know they allowed felons on the show. Next up on DWTS... Ted Bundy!

Intriguing..................she's off the show. I've never been a fan of dancing with the stars. It was boring, and not whatsoever appealing. However when I heard Lil Kim was performing I was utterly shocked; therefore I decided to tune in. Well I did vote and I am sadden to see her go. What you guys fail to realize is her persona when it comes to music is just her persona. Who knows if it's true and frankly I really don't care if it is. So scratch all the bs when it comes to what her lyrics are or when it comes to how she displayed herself previously. Also many have gone to jail for far worse; however the public has embraced them as if it was nothing. So please shut the h up regarding her going to jail. She did great and I will no longer watch the show. By the way it is not racist that we watched the show because of her because like any other show you watch; you watch it because of the line-up and who all is starring. Get real and please don't make it seem as if the comments he said where not inappropriate because honestly if it where made to a white woman, hispanic, or whomever it would still be deemed as inappropriate. Now I grant some wish to be judgemental as if they have done no wrong, but please spare all bs over being lost in translation. Lady & a tramp was based upon dogs........I read the story to my daughter. Anyhow Lil Kim brought diversity and spice to the show that's why ppl watched. She went a complete 360 from her persona outside the ballroom. I congratulate her from being something other than what most consider her. Congrats and again I am so sadden

Did Bruno insult lil' Kim? didn't think that was possible...the ex-felon has no business being on TV

Ty should of left the show, but then again he knew NOTHING about dancing and has come pretty far. not in the voting but his dancing. I do not believe she is owed an apology as she herself was talking about her ""Booty""all the time. He meant the type of dances she is best at. I do not believe he meant to actually say she is a tramp.

He called her just as he saw her. She is indeed comfortable playing the part of a tramp in her music. No doubt about it. That is what the whole rap genre is about. It plays up the part of punks, thugs, and tramps as well as promotes sex and violence.
He said she was more comfortable being a tramp. He was indeed right. She is more comfortable in her own world of rap than she is in the world of glamourous dance. It had nothing to do with her personally, just her own choices.

I don't think that Bruno was trying to hurt Lil' Kim. I just think he talks before he thinks. You all know how passionate he get's (yelling, can't stay in his seat, etc.) When I heard him make the "tramp statement" The first thing I thought was that he was talking about her style of dance being "trampy" and that she tried being more straight laced for this dance and it didn't work for her personally. That he liked seeing her being sexier and more flamboyant in her movements. I get what he was trying to say. It's a shame no one else did......

WOW! I don't know what Buno and the public was seeing that I didn't BUT she was amazing on the dance floor. The judges knew all along who they wanted at the end and who to win. THey score high on Melissa when they admitted she messed on 2 things. She should have stayed another 2 weeks at the least! She was better than Shawn and Melissa and Ty.

49. sexy dee -
is this show fixed lil kim should still be on the show. something is not right.

50. mick -
They should bring her back on the show because his negative comment could have had an impact on the votes!!!!!!!!!!

51. PoeticLove -
every1 that say she is a tramp or a ho leave that be because on the show she was a pro and a lady. She did bring a new people to the show just to see her. His comment was no excuse how her rap persona is and she left the lil kim of the rap world at home adn brought lil kim the entertainer to the tv world

52. GlendaS -
I took as comment as she was better dancing wild and sexy dances rather than the slow dances. In no way was he personally calling her a tramp he was referring to her dance styles. Its the same as referring to an actor better at comedy than drama parts.

Even though Bruno's choice of words was a mistake I don't think he meant them as an insult.I think he he was trying to say as a bouyant person her best dances were the ones where she got to shake & shimmer. For her that was a graceful dance but if you get past the comment and look as the other girls, she did not have the same flow of movement. I also was shocked she was not staying, that is why we have to call, call, call.

54. Switch -
Bruno meant it how it was said, him being from another country has nothing to do with it. He has been a judge on the show since the first season. Everyone keeps talking about how lil' kim's rap persona and a few people even commented on her personal life and neither of those have anything to do with her dancing and being on the show. The show is called DANCING with the Stars, so the primary focus should be on her dancing not her career or personal life. It was an insult and I think because of that lil' kim might have been ready to leave the show. I think she handled it very well.

55. Marie -
U r what u r and no matter how much u put on pretty clothes and stuff does not make u anything different. she was a tramp before and still is been on Dancing with the Star does not change that. I was glad to see her go and Ty stay.

56. KikiD2 -
As usual Bruno tripped over his tongue BUT he didn't mean it in a bad way it was a style way.....and as usual all the thin skinned OF all colors are freaking out/people get over it a little kid statement of sticks and stones comes to mind......sticks and stones may break my bones BUT words will never hurt me/I CHOOSE WHAT PEOPLE SAY TO NOT EFFECT me. It was terrible that the cowboy fellow got to stay in stead of Lil'Kim because that man can not dance. Lil' Kim had a real chance to have won.

57. Yahoo! Music User -
I don't think Bruno meant to insult Lil Kim. She was much better in the dances that showcased her personality and fire. AND I was totally shocked that she, instead of Ty, was voted off. The power of the fans is scary sometimes! The four finalists should have been Gilles, Shawn, Melissa and Lil Kim!

58. Crystal -
I understood what Bruno was talking about so why get upset about it. Get off the potty and quit pouting!

59. judith -
I don't believe Bruno ment to insult Lil Kim...only to point out that she was more comfortable with the sexy dances than the ladylike ones. He was'nt speaking of her morales. He really likes her and has told her so often. I believe she was booted because to make the finals you have to be good at all types of ballroom dancing, not just one category. I think he was using the Lady and The Tramp theme. He however should think before he speaks.

60. DEB -
I think the comment was uncalled for, but remember people WE have to vote. I love Ty, but Lil kim should still be there.
