Did 'Dancing With The Stars' Insult Lil' Kim?

Posted Tue May 5, 2009 2:29pm PDT by Justin Mathews in Musictoob

Did Bruno go too far when he called Lil' Kim a "tramp?"

Lil' Kim, rapper and Dancing With The Stars contestant, is no stranger to criticism.

But many think judge Bruno Tonioli may have crossed the line Monday night from "tough judge" to just plain "jerk." If you missed it, the comment came after Kim and partner Derek Hough finished an elegant waltz.

Bruno, after saying he thought the other judges' favorable scores were due to "medication," ripped into Kim.

"You try to be a lady, but you're more comfortable being a tramp," said Bruno.

Many across the country were stunned--including Family Law attorney and marital expert Vikki Ziegler. What did the women's advocate and founder of DivorceDating.com have to say for Bruno?

"It was inappropriate and uncalled-for," said Vikki.

"I think he should issue a public apology. I think it sends a really poor message to women. [Lil' Kim is] in a competition, and her outfits, her behavior, are all 'it's a show!' I mean, isn't that what it's about?"

Ziegler explained to Musictoob what Bruno really meant.

"Calling her a 'tramp,' or 'looking like a tramp,' says to...young women, who want to be stars, want to be rappers, that somehow her behavior in a dancing competition evidences a lack of morals. That's what he was trying to say, and I think it was disrespectful and inappropriate."

The second dance of the night for Derek and Lil' Kim was the salsa; a dance that saw the return of what Kim called the "Bionic Booty."

But, perhaps anxious to begin damage control, Bruno gave a standing ovation to the pair as soon as they finished the sizzling Latin number--with not one mention of "unladylike" behavior.

The couple scored three nines, for a total of 27, on the salsa, making Kim one of the longest-running musicians on the show--easily beating out Belinda Carlisle and Chuck Wicks.

Musictoob exclusive: See Dancing judge Carrie Ann Inaba try to rap

Musictoob has exclusive, behind-the-scenes video of Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba showing off her rap skills.

In the video, a promotional clip for Dr. Scholl's For Her, Carrie Ann Inaba introduces her on-set dance partner, then after a "blip" she raps: "Here she is/She's gonna give you some good/dance/shoe/tips!" and throws up a "sign."

To be fair, Carrie Ann says she's "obviously not a rapper." Luckily Lil' Kim wasn't there to turn the tables on Inaba and critique her hip-hop skills.

I think it's unfair to single her out as being a Tramp when most, if not all, of the other female contestants & dancers dress and present themselves in a similar way. They all seem to project the same sex appeal as Lil Kim, yet she is singled out as a Tramp. I don't get it.

I think Mr. Tonioli meant that she almost "excels" in the Latin type dances...flashy, moves well, i.e., the remark about the Bionic Booty...I feel it was more a poor choice of words than an insult. Everyone on the show performs some of the dances much better than others. I would rather have seen Lil Kim remain in the competition than Ms. Rycroft. I'm betting she will win the trophy not so much on her talent, but more so because she was the scorned woman of The Bachelor. I don't know why they keep referring to her as the "star" of the Bachelor since the bachelor was the star and there were many other women on the show besides her. In my opinion, all the others are stars or celebrities except her...she is there for sympathy and is milking it for all it is worth. America seems to be very willing to sit there and lick her wounds to make it better.

what do u expect from a man who cant speak english correctly

I FOR ONE WON'T WATCHED DANCING WITH THE STARS ANYMORE, THAT COMMET IS VERY INSULTING TO WAMEN PERIOD.

If you look back, Bruno has said alot of things that were uncalled for and extermely rude.
I do not understand why some people have to make it a black/white issue as I have heard him make uncalled for and rude comments on the white contestants as well. He should be taken off the show and replaced with someone who has some common sense. I do not think an apology fixes everything.

This show is based on dancing skills period! There is no way that Lil Kim should have been voted off. I am not one of her biggest fans, however judging totally on her dance performances, she did not deserve to be voted off. I also think calling anyone a "tramp" is disrespectful!

87. Pat -
I think Bruno was referring to the Frank Sinatra "Lady is a Tramp", but perhaps the younger viewers don't know that, it was a compliment !! She's young, energetic and not suited to the waltz, whereas she can shake her booty and is better suited to Latin dances. But, Kim should have remained and Ty or Shawn should have been booted off. Gilles and Malissa will be the last 2 standing in the finals anyway..

I think this whole thing is silly, li'l Kim did a wonderful job. Bruno apologized from what I heard that he did not mean it the way it came out, which happens. If people paid attention during the entire season they would know that.

89. Delilah -
I can't believe how many people on this have NEVER heard og "Lady and the Tramp"..intelligient people knew what Bruno meant. You people are just looking for excuses to get upset over nothing..

90. Cas -
calling someone who was sent to prison a "tramp" is hardly an insult - it's Dancing WIth The Stars, not Dancing WIth The Ex-Cons

Lil' Kim's "persona" is of a sexual nature. She is more comfortable in her sexiness than in her simplicity as a natural woman. Bruno, poor word choice but dead on. An apology should be given, immediately. But the problem here is not Lil' Kim's sexuality but the fixing of the show towards the Bachelor cast off. Lil Kim was her ONLY competition, she's gone now so she wins by default and to the thrill of the script writers! The show has stepped away from what it was meant to be, taking stars OUT of their comfort zone into something new. "What's her name" used to be a professional cheerleader -aka- DANCER, unfair by all accounts! Lil Kim by all acounts is not a "lady" nor a trained dancer therefore she is WAY out of her comfort zone, as Bruno kindly pointed out. Kristi Yamaguci should not have been cast as she too is a dancer...Bring back David Alan Grier & Jerry Springer, those were the TRUE contestants for the show. Shame on this show for following suit of other "reality" shows and scripting the outcome...Adam Lambert wins American Idol too.

I was really disappointed with the show last night. This show is not about fans and we all know Ty should have gone home a long time ago. He is not a good dancer but he never said he was. Lil Kim deserved to be in finals and I think Bruno should apologize as she is not a "tramp". It is all show but he was out of line with this one. Secondly I think that Len should retire from judging next year. This year I'm not sure where he is coming from he was this one week and the next he wants another .... you can't win with him as you could see from the professionals they didn't even know where he was coming from this year. Guys let's not ruin a show. Ty looks like he has a fabulous fan base but I never heard of him until he went on "Dancing with the Stars": Lil Kim should be brought back and that is my opinion. The other three couples are "great" and should be in the finals. I've tried to get thru and the lines are always busy and I mean my fingers are moving trying to get thru. Maybe they need more lines for this show. Like I said I was really disappointed with the outcome last night. You sure you didn't count wrong?

all I can say is that the show is a joke, it's like a circus. I think Ty is a good singer , but he sure is not a dancer. Lil Kim is by far the better dancer and Bruno should brush up on his tact The people didn't vote on talent, but on who their star is. That is why even though she can dance Melissa is no Star. So what's she doing there in the first place. this show is a disappointment. And far as Bruno goes lets see if can he dance!!!!!!!!!!!

94. Sunset65 -
LOL !! These comments are delicious.. by all means.. it's because she's a BLACK woman.. get over it already. Stop playing that card... it's getting really old.

Face it folks.. this is what happens when the voting public speaks. It SHOULD be about Dancing.. but it isn't.. just like American Idol is not about SINGING... it's a televised popularity contest.

Obviously the public likes Ty better.. maybe it's an image thing.. (ya think?).

I don't watch these types of shows.. but coming here to see how ticked off and outraged people get.. makes my day.

Thanks for the laughs 8)

Listen, while it was a wrong choice of words, I think he was refering to the ole Sinatra standard "The lady is a Tramp"...Not saying she was loose, or being disrespectful..unfortunately, I am old enough to rationalize this...This Bruno guy doesn't have a mean bone in his body.....Get a grip, I am sure Li'l Kim has been called worse!! Albeit, not on national TV, but I really think that was the intention of the comment...

96. Nene -
Really some of your comments are interesting..... She did not portray herself as a tramp on the show... I truely believe she has overcome alot of obstacles in her personal life.... Lil Kim was the only reason I watched, heck TiVo the show. His comment was uncalled for and it wasn't right.... Make Lil Kim a judge......

ROFL -- my fave part of this article:

(begin quote) "It was inappropriate and uncalled-for," said Vikki.

"I think he should issue a public apology. I think it sends a really poor message to women. [Lil' Kim is] in a competition, and her outfits, her behavior, are all 'it's a show!' I mean, isn't that what it's about?" (end quote)

ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? just google "lil kim", then click on images. i don't think you can find one picture where she's not half naked. yes, i agree that bruno's comments were too harsh for "a family show", but clearly he meant it all in good fun, as he's always trying to come up with different analogies and puns to make the show interesting. the lady asking for a public apology obviously doesn't know who lil kim is, as if lil kim's image was squeaky clean before DWTS. Lady, if you want to stop sending poor messages to women, maybe you should tell that to all the lil kims in the world.

98. Vincent M -
It is a dance show and I don't feel as if the Judges nor America vote on the dancing. Everyone has their favorite, but it come a time when you should say, I like you but you just can't dance. It is wrong that Ty is still on DWTS. I feel as if Len never really liked little Kim despite what he said last night. I don't think any of the women danced any better than Kim, yet they got higher scores from the judges. As far a Bruno, he always put his foot in his mouth, so what is different this time. Being sexy is not being a whore, or if that was the case, there has been a lot of whores on DWTS. I have felt since week four that the Judges wanted the top three to be the ones they have now minus Ty and that little Kim never had a shot at the finals despite her consistently good dancing.

99. Yahoo! Music User -
People get a grip, it was NOT RACIAL, and if you look back over thae past seasons, he's insulted plenty of white folk too...He was paying her a compliment and apologized right away for the way it sounded...Kim understood, why is everyone getting so worked up? Too bad she's gone, because Shawn 's waltz was just as stiff as Kim's was, and Shawn should have gone first. Ty should have left 2 weeks ago, but his fans are keeping him there. Where were Kim's fans ? they should have voted,Monday night, not commenting here on Wednesday

Me and my wife watched it and my wife literally hit the ceiling when she heard the comment. She had been watching the show recently and that night she thought Lil Kim danced just as good as the gymnast they gave straight nines on. The insult is the fact that there was no remorse in the statement. Bruno had a pre-conceived idea about how Kim should be portrayed and that was of a poorly dressed (WHICH that outfit and make-up was), ill-behaved, ghetto rapper. She also felt that her partner Hough jumped in to try diffuse because she thought that Kim was going to speak her mind. Was I insulted, yes, because the idea that even women who bring themselves from the dregs of society can rise up and show class, will never achieve because there are those (mainly white men) will always perceive you as a piece of property. If you are black, field hand sex toy, hispanic, latin sex toy, asian, asian sex toy. The industry has stressed thin blond hair blue eyes that anything outside of that realm is not beauty to be admired, but sex toys to be groped and degraded. And that is the sad thing about his comment.
