Did 'Dancing With The Stars' Insult Lil' Kim?

Posted Tue May 5, 2009 2:29pm PDT by Justin Mathews in Musictoob

Did Bruno go too far when he called Lil' Kim a "tramp?"

Lil' Kim, rapper and Dancing With The Stars contestant, is no stranger to criticism.

But many think judge Bruno Tonioli may have crossed the line Monday night from "tough judge" to just plain "jerk." If you missed it, the comment came after Kim and partner Derek Hough finished an elegant waltz.

Bruno, after saying he thought the other judges' favorable scores were due to "medication," ripped into Kim.

"You try to be a lady, but you're more comfortable being a tramp," said Bruno.

Many across the country were stunned--including Family Law attorney and marital expert Vikki Ziegler. What did the women's advocate and founder of DivorceDating.com have to say for Bruno?

"It was inappropriate and uncalled-for," said Vikki.

"I think he should issue a public apology. I think it sends a really poor message to women. [Lil' Kim is] in a competition, and her outfits, her behavior, are all 'it's a show!' I mean, isn't that what it's about?"

Ziegler explained to Musictoob what Bruno really meant.

"Calling her a 'tramp,' or 'looking like a tramp,' says to...young women, who want to be stars, want to be rappers, that somehow her behavior in a dancing competition evidences a lack of morals. That's what he was trying to say, and I think it was disrespectful and inappropriate."

The second dance of the night for Derek and Lil' Kim was the salsa; a dance that saw the return of what Kim called the "Bionic Booty."

But, perhaps anxious to begin damage control, Bruno gave a standing ovation to the pair as soon as they finished the sizzling Latin number--with not one mention of "unladylike" behavior.

The couple scored three nines, for a total of 27, on the salsa, making Kim one of the longest-running musicians on the show--easily beating out Belinda Carlisle and Chuck Wicks.

Musictoob exclusive: See Dancing judge Carrie Ann Inaba try to rap

Musictoob has exclusive, behind-the-scenes video of Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba showing off her rap skills.

In the video, a promotional clip for Dr. Scholl's For Her, Carrie Ann Inaba introduces her on-set dance partner, then after a "blip" she raps: "Here she is/She's gonna give you some good/dance/shoe/tips!" and throws up a "sign."

To be fair, Carrie Ann says she's "obviously not a rapper." Luckily Lil' Kim wasn't there to turn the tables on Inaba and critique her hip-hop skills.

For goodness sake people, he meant she is much better at the Latin dances than the smooth. It may not have been the best choice of words, but he didn't mean she sleeps around. He was using Lady 9for the smooth) and the Tramp (for the Latin). He just thinks she's great at the hot, sultry, Latin dances.

I thought this was a reference to the movie, "Lady & the Tramp." Maybe I am incensitive, but when I watched it, I thought nothing of it. He still gave her a good score, so I don't think he meant crulity by it.

Besides, it is a free country. If Vikki Ziegler doesn't like it, boycott the show. Free speech is allowed still I think. We have come to censorship of what can be said on television, then we are in trouble.

I am of a minority religion, and if I reacted every time someone made fun of it or critcized it, I would be spending my whole life worrying about it. Lighten up people.

I thought lil kim was a winner - who is voting for TY? he has no dancing qualities. he is as stiff as a board. People must have the wrong number when calling in to vote for him. Ty and jewel need to go back to the ranch....

Come on people. Yes this is a dance competition, but it IS also a popularity contest. Why do you think they have viewers vote?!? If it was strictly a dance contest, it would strictly be judged by dance judges, not viewers who don't know anything about dancing and the rules of the competition. Does anyone really believe, based solely on dancing, that Denise Richards should have gone home before Steve Wozniak? That Steve-O out danced David Alan Grier? The reason this show is so popular is because the viewers get to be involved with the show, just like American Idol.
Yes, Li'l Kim out danced Ty Murray. So what! That is only half the battle. The other half is getting the viewers to vote for you, and that didn't happen for her. That doesn't mean the show is rigged, or the judges are biased. It means not as many people wanted to see her back as wanted to see Ty Murray.
I am not a Li'l Kim fan (don't like RAP), but was very pleased to see how well she adapted to this type of dancing instead of hip-hop. She danced very well in the latin dances, not so much in the slow ballroom type.
Bruno was saying the same thing with the "tramp" comment as he was a couple of weeks ago when he said "Li'l Kim without raunch is like a marguerita without tequila". He is purely talking what type of dance she does well.
Get a life people, and quit being overly sensitive to everything.

Talk about tramps, Malissa was on the Bachelor for crying out loud !! Give Bruno a break, he meant it as a compliment, Like in the Frank Sinatra song..that's his age group. He loves Kim, he always said great things about her. Her waltz wasn't that good, her Latins are better. Ty has the bigger fan base that's why he's there, not because he can dance. Someone has to go, I hope Malissa is next because she isn't a "star", and she should never have been there in the first place, she has a dancing background.

I don't think Bruno meant any harm. Lil'l Kim is just amazing when she dances a little naughty and Bruno likes that. Lil' Kim should not have been eliminated. I'm shocked that Ty is still there. He should have left three weeks ago. I don't like what Jewel said about Melissa either.

I think that in this case, the show is not based on talent. How in the world could Lil Kim get booted off. She has been one of the front runners from the first show. I think it was unfair. I am done with the show.

I am pretty much done watching the show too. What "some" people don't realize is that sometimes singers, rappers etc., their stage perfromance are just acts and they are not like that when you meet in another venue. LIl Kim has really impressed me with her dance and her grace. They have talked about her "booty" throughtout the whole series and she has not once complained. Hey us black folk got booty what can we say and we can not tuck it in as David Alan Grier was asked to do.
I literally cringed at that comment and could see the brief reaction on Lil Kim's face. No one wants or deserved to be called a "tramp" on natiional tv and he is luck that sista girl didn't come out and cuss his sweet behind out. Jerk!

109. mamabelovedgirl -
Lil' kim was the only reason i watched the show, she was one of the best danccer, they need to get some new judges cause these judges need to be replace.

110. Geminiwolf -
People relax! Go back and watch the video and you will see Bruno DID apologize. Further, he was not trying to assasinate her character but point out she was a much better dancer doing more sensual type dances than the traditional ballroom type dances. That is all he meant. People...get a life!

111. ELAINED -
People, the image of Lil Kim as a "tramp" , is just that. Anyone who has watched her on this show got to see nothing but a lady, and yes- a sexy lady. But, I don't believe Bruno meant to disrespect Lil Kim. If you've watched him you would know that he gets all caught up in the dances, especially when they are hot or really good performances. I like his spirit and fire for all of dance. Having said that, I must say, the wrong couple was eliminated last night.

112. MS2TALLNSEXY4U -
I HARDLY EVER WATCH THE SHOW BUT SINCE SHE WAS ON THERE I STARTED WATCHING IT A LITTLE BIT. I THINK SHE DID VERY WELL ON THE SHOW AND SHE LOST QUITE OF BIT OF WEIGHT. SHE LOOK GOOD AND SHE PERFORMED VERY WELL AND AM PROUD OF HER. SO WHATEVER! WHATEVER! HE DO NEED TO APOLOGIZE!!! REGARDLESS OF WHO SHE IS AND WHAT SHE HAVE DONE IN HER PASS. IT WAS WRONG .

113. nicolette -
I started watching because of Lil Kim .. I heard about what an excellent performance she had been putting on so for the first time I found myself hooked to Dancing with the Stars..I don't think he really meant "tramp" like we mean tramp. Remember the song "That's why the lady is a tramp"? Anyways Lil Kim is a little trampy have you heard her music..she really puts herself out there.. I don't think it hurt her feelings she's tough..

Let's face it ..It comes down to America the voers..what's wrong with you Ty has absolutely no rhythm.. he had become almost a joke especially with his little solo to Jewel.. Lil Kim nailed her performance.. America voting is what keeps me interested in these talent shows.. It wasnt Lil Kims time to go..

114. forgiven and heaven bound -
Ty is as much a gentlemen as lil kim is a tramp!

115. Carol -
Wow. I don't really understand how this got turned into an issue of race...but obviously since we elected a black President...black's feel like they should be the top in everything, and when they aren't.....everyone else is discrimintating against them. Ok...cause that makes a lot of sense. I have nothing against Lil' Kim.....I've never even listened to her music. And yeah....she might be a better dancer than Ty....but as someone already stated, this show is about taking a non-dancer and turning them into a dancer. Obviously people in America like Ty and that's why he is still on the show. And to all of you out there saying "ohhh all the redneck, racist, people of America are why Ty is still on the show," there ARE black people in Rodeo.

116. Nancy -
I don't think Bruo meant it as an insult. He always says how hot she dances. I think he meant that she is better at sexy dances rather than slow dances. However, this is a dance contest. Will people stop voting just because you like someone and vote for the best dancers? Ty is likable but Kim outdances him. He should have gone two weeks ago.The same thing happened last season with Clores Leachman. The show should stop getting sympathy contestants.

117. Yahoo! Music User -
Lil Kim carried herself like a lady the entire time she was on the show. She wasn't ghetto, she worked hard, she danced well. She was articulate and poised every second of the time she was on camera. The comments rolled off the lips of Bruno so easily because it means nothing for white people to hypersexualize Black women. We aren't given the same level of respect as white women and then when we speak up, we are told we are being too sensitive. God forbid a black judge would have said that to Melissa, the entire internet would come to a halt with outrage.

118. Rachel -
Bruno is a flamboyant homosexual male who speaks before he thinks. That's one of the things people like about him. He is also British, and well, the British have a whole different set of what constitutes appropriate behavior. I don't think Bruno meant to be vicious. He was, in my opinion, stating that Kim is more comfortable dancing the more flamboyant, energetic numbers than the slow numbers. She's a rappers, and rap music is high energy, move, move, move. It's what Kim is used to. Yes, in reality, Kim is a bit of a slut, we all know that, so I don't think Kim really took it as an insult.

119. Ms. Lucky -
Last night was the Last time for watching dancing with the stars....Ty over Kim...come on get real!!!!

120. Xavier -
Being a Lil Kim fan to the core I personally felt Bruno's comment was completely out of line. Apology? My eyes will not see the end of this season of dancing with the stars.. my reason for watching was Lil Kim.
