The 20 Greatest Goth Tracks Ever

Posted Fri Mar 6, 2009 1:09pm PST by Luke Lewis in The NME Blog
The Cure were so astonishing at the NME Awards and the Big Gig--at both shows with able support from the similarly jet-black White Lies--it got us thinking about goth at NME.

The problem with deciding the bets goth tracks is that no one can agree on exactly what goth is. The arena-filling '80s bombast of the Cult? The gonzo horror-punk of Misfits? The modern mall-emo of My Chemical Romance?

It's a broad church, which is why we decided to open out the criteria and include such acts as Bat For Lashes ("I Saw A Light") and Manic Street Preachers ("The Intense Humming Of Evil"). They might not conform to the standard visual image of goth, but in both cases, those songs feature intensely gothic elements: dark-hued imagery, doomladen atmospheres, a sense of the macabre.

Check out our top 20, and let us know who you think we've left out by leaving a comment.

PSh. Goth is hella easy to clasify. Its about atmospherics, bleakness, icy synths (important), and poetry...

Explain how MCR has this...please.

MCR is only considered Goth b/c they have black "forebidding" outfits. But please...goth? More like Post-Emo and pop.

Oh, GOD, that list SUCKS! Where is Christian Death?!!? Should I even BOTHER pointing out other exclusions?

How in ...Marylin Manson is INDUSTRIAL Metal...

Seriously...how is it that not GOTH METAL bands are mentioned? The only one that MAYBE fits, just maybe fits is

Interpol...maybe.

All the other ones are by NO MEANS goth...

3. DUDE -
No list of Goth is complete without Barry Manilow.

4. Anne -
"Sebastiane" by Sex Gang Children.
Gothic line-- "Eat your children baked in a pie"

Also agree that MCR isn't really goth.

At least you folks included Bauhaus. That's awesome!

DUDE, you forgot the other famous Goth dude with the first name Barry: Barry White.

MCR is friggin' awesome!!! I'm listening to them at this moment, and their old stuff is more punkish. Mall emo! Honestly... not much of a worse insult you can give nowadays... I doubt you can find bulletproof vests at Hot Topic.

Whatever. The Astro Zombies cover was awesome but I think To The End was more gothish... I guess if this is the 20 greatest... however, I recently saw Gerard Way wearing a jean jacket and man scarf... not exactly goth.

sumone should mention Cradle Of Filth, Deadstar Assembly, Emilie Autumn, and Deathstars to this person.
you say you know sumthin bout "goth tracks", they fall under your category stereotypism.
and puhleez. you damn bloggerz only look at the top of the famous list. dont be lazy. check at the bottom, you'll be suprised to find not so famous rockers that are better than any of these you mentioned.

I'm with troy in this one. Bauhaus in the opening of "The Hunger" with the thin white duke, and Catherine Deneuve was quintessential Goth. I'd throw in another band, And Also the Trees.

I haven't a clue, I'm more of a classic dark wave dude meself. However, I will take a stab at the good old Damned album "Phantasmagoria"
