Scarlett Johansson: One Of The Most Brilliant Records You'll Hear This Year, Honestly

Posted Fri May 2, 2008 12:18pm PDT by Dan Martin in The NME Blog

When Scarlett Johansson's name was linked to the role of Courtney Love in the forthcoming adaptation of Kurt biopic Heavier Than Heaven, it was a rumour we were inclined to believe. Not just because of insider knowledge, but because we at NME had heard word that Scarlett was about to do a pretty decent turn as a rock star in her own right.

Buzz around her debut album as a real-life muso, Anywhere I Lay My Head, has been buzzing for a while now. And this week it arrived in the postbags of us U.K. journalists.

And simply: Wow.

If you thought a Hollywood A-lister recording an album of Tom Waits covers sounded like a folly too far, it's because you couldn't have imagined a Hollywood A-lister could throw such a totemic curveball of a vocal performance. She sounds like Nico, only grander, and more like a space alien. And possibly even more nonchalant and detached. It's like Dusty Springfield was in My Bloody Valentine.

All complete with breathtaking production from Dave Sitek--named only last week in NME as the number-one most exciting futurist innovator operating in music right now. And guest vocals from David Bowie. And guitars from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner. What's not to go silly over?

With Amy Winehouse turning Bond Girl (sorta), barriers are becoming nicely blurred by a new generation of she-rockers who recall an older kind of star magic. A fantasy line between futurist music and old-school Hollywood.

We're not so sure about today's news that Nicole Kidman (a woman last heard duetting "Somethin' Stupid" with Robbie Williams) is going to produce and star in a movie about Dusty Springfield, but you can't have everything:

Check out a future issue of NME for an exclusive in-depth interview with Scarlett herself, and try and cross your legs until Anywhere I Lay My Head is released later this month, because it will slay you.

You know, as an actress, i find Scarlett to be interesting always choosing roles a little offbeat. Which makes her a great actress. And there is no denying that some music is better when it does not conform and does not strive to get the perfect pitches other singers can get. In fact they are great because of it. But the only thing the they have and this song lacks is creativity. Much like the article explains in so many words is that it sounds like a combination remake of others styles slapped together and sung in a flat tone. As a song it felt depressing, not sad, but depressing. Creatively speaking it lacked originality.

Oh, my gosh how terrible, she really can't sing, although a good attempt to muffle her voice with loud instruments, they attempted to create vibrato in her voice with sound equipment, poor girl, really bad... hopefully the other songs are better

Okay, you know how in the beginning and/or end of some songs, they have the creepy little Amy Winehouse/church choir voices singing that you can barely hear? I thought that's just what it was, and so I sat there for the whole 3 minutes and 58 seconds, waiting for the actual singing to start, and I never heard it. It's a shame, really. I expected her to be so much better!

this is garbage,i hope the rest of album doesn't sound like this.

~WOW~ She can sing, but that was unbelieveably terrible. Boring, drab, altogether just bad. Not really even worth posting a comment, but I couldn't resist, this was pure garbage. She should just stick with acting...leave singing to the professionals.

a complete rip off from the post-brittany..anti-glam, retro genius of amy winehouse. the video was good, but her voice...well, if she wasn't who she is,,,would this even be here? no... i'm sick of the mariah careys of the world,,but this is just plan boring...

I thought it was awful!!! Absolutely awful. You can not even hear her voice on the first single. LOL!

Amy Winehouse is brilliant, Madonna is brilliant, Bette Midler is brilliant, Dixie Chicks are brilliant. But Scarlett Johanson is tolerable to say the least. Are you getting paid to review this CD?

Horrible!!! Anyone sing like that!!

Her voice is the total opposite of the sappy, sugary, over-the-top American Idol type of singing.
She doesn't have a 'pretty' singing voice - but it works well on a raw, gritty rock song like this.

She sounds like Sinead O'connor, I'm diggin it

If this is GOOD, I hate to think what BAD is. Dan Martin might need to have his ears coned! LOL To each his own. Love Scarlett as an actress though.

my cat would sound better with all that techno backup! I am also wondering if the reviewer has actually ever heard any Dusty Springfield...

I Love Scarlett's movies, but she is not meant to be a singer. The video was kind of good, but the song was terrible. Maybe the rest of the album is better, I'll have to see.

oh c'mon give the girl a chance! Love the voice by the way. At least she's extremely trying. and succeeding. Good Job!

Wow, that was bad. I mean really bad.
