Scarlett Johansson: One Of The Most Brilliant Records You'll Hear This Year, Honestly

Posted Fri May 2, 2008 12:18pm PDT by Dan Martin in The NME Blog

When Scarlett Johansson's name was linked to the role of Courtney Love in the forthcoming adaptation of Kurt biopic Heavier Than Heaven, it was a rumour we were inclined to believe. Not just because of insider knowledge, but because we at NME had heard word that Scarlett was about to do a pretty decent turn as a rock star in her own right.

Buzz around her debut album as a real-life muso, Anywhere I Lay My Head, has been buzzing for a while now. And this week it arrived in the postbags of us U.K. journalists.

And simply: Wow.

If you thought a Hollywood A-lister recording an album of Tom Waits covers sounded like a folly too far, it's because you couldn't have imagined a Hollywood A-lister could throw such a totemic curveball of a vocal performance. She sounds like Nico, only grander, and more like a space alien. And possibly even more nonchalant and detached. It's like Dusty Springfield was in My Bloody Valentine.

All complete with breathtaking production from Dave Sitek--named only last week in NME as the number-one most exciting futurist innovator operating in music right now. And guest vocals from David Bowie. And guitars from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner. What's not to go silly over?

With Amy Winehouse turning Bond Girl (sorta), barriers are becoming nicely blurred by a new generation of she-rockers who recall an older kind of star magic. A fantasy line between futurist music and old-school Hollywood.

We're not so sure about today's news that Nicole Kidman (a woman last heard duetting "Somethin' Stupid" with Robbie Williams) is going to produce and star in a movie about Dusty Springfield, but you can't have everything:

Check out a future issue of NME for an exclusive in-depth interview with Scarlett herself, and try and cross your legs until Anywhere I Lay My Head is released later this month, because it will slay you.

What? She's beautiful and a pretty good actress but she is not a singer and she sounded terrible. I love unique voices that are different and recognizable but that was awful. I love Nutini, Blunt, Duffy, Tunstall, Alanis etc. and they all have different styles but that was excruciating. But I did like the video.

This is not the most brilliant record that will be heard this year...if it is, then we're screwed. Sadly, though I am not a fan of Spears, I would rather hear Britney Spears sing into a fan for two hours than hear Scarlett sing one song. Maybe she'd sound better with a amazing rock band behind her but she's awful.

I love different artists but this isn't a singer. Is it artsy? Maybe. But it's still terrible to listen to.

It has no range. its flat and the video doesn't do anything for me. I thought she was going to wow me but maybe it was that one song. All I know is I won't be buying her CD anytime soon.

Good for Scarlette Johansson! I'm sure this is not be the last we'll hear from her musicaly. To all you who don't like it, let every one know how you feel so you look a fool when she blows up the charts, and recives an award or two.

Sounds like a bad impression of Sinead O'Connor.

wow, not what i expected after the rave reviews from the critics. i kept waiting to hear some great climactic chords. well, that didn't happen. had to listen again to make sure of my opinion. the haunting, depression/angst-driven vocals don't work all the time. oh well.

doesn't sound too great to me...sounds like it is all one tone. Anyone can sing like this....I am curious to see what the rest of the album sounds like just because all the critics are buzzing about it, it has to get better than this , right?

This sounds digitized...I wanna hear her real voice...probably sing acoustic..? I can't really criticize her yet cuz her voice live might sound better than this recorded song.

It sounded so bad I couldn't finish it. She can't hold a note and I'm sorry, but all of one song is a cover. Can she not be original?

that was actually very annoying.

Sounds like a dead dog singing through the mouth of Sinead O'Conner

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!! DREADFUL!

When I first hear she was going to try singing I was like not another actor turned singer. After hearing it I kinda like it has a very 60's mod kinda sound I know that is not everyones cup of tea but not everyone likes pop, country, metal or whatever type of music to each his own.

55. erika -
i thought it was pretty bad, sounded like a chant or something. the music was prettier than her voice.

That was horrible, horrible, horrible! What a waste of money!
