Scarlett Johansson: One Of The Most Brilliant Records You'll Hear This Year, Honestly

Posted Fri May 2, 2008 12:18pm PDT by Dan Martin in The NME Blog

When Scarlett Johansson's name was linked to the role of Courtney Love in the forthcoming adaptation of Kurt biopic Heavier Than Heaven, it was a rumour we were inclined to believe. Not just because of insider knowledge, but because we at NME had heard word that Scarlett was about to do a pretty decent turn as a rock star in her own right.

Buzz around her debut album as a real-life muso, Anywhere I Lay My Head, has been buzzing for a while now. And this week it arrived in the postbags of us U.K. journalists.

And simply: Wow.

If you thought a Hollywood A-lister recording an album of Tom Waits covers sounded like a folly too far, it's because you couldn't have imagined a Hollywood A-lister could throw such a totemic curveball of a vocal performance. She sounds like Nico, only grander, and more like a space alien. And possibly even more nonchalant and detached. It's like Dusty Springfield was in My Bloody Valentine.

All complete with breathtaking production from Dave Sitek--named only last week in NME as the number-one most exciting futurist innovator operating in music right now. And guest vocals from David Bowie. And guitars from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner. What's not to go silly over?

With Amy Winehouse turning Bond Girl (sorta), barriers are becoming nicely blurred by a new generation of she-rockers who recall an older kind of star magic. A fantasy line between futurist music and old-school Hollywood.

We're not so sure about today's news that Nicole Kidman (a woman last heard duetting "Somethin' Stupid" with Robbie Williams) is going to produce and star in a movie about Dusty Springfield, but you can't have everything:

Check out a future issue of NME for an exclusive in-depth interview with Scarlett herself, and try and cross your legs until Anywhere I Lay My Head is released later this month, because it will slay you.

wow nothing has been this bad since.....well since every other actor thought they could sing! like mila this crap makes me want to slit the wrists of babys!

I don't understand what you guys are talking about- I loved it. Her voice sounded fine to me. I think I actually like this version better than the original. And Bowie likes it enough to add to it.

This album is only "good" if you're deaf. What a way to ruin beautiful songs!

64. Yahoo! Music User -
Scarlett, why are you doing a horrible imitation of Sinead O'connor?

65. DARKNESS -
OH MY GOD .......THIS IS AWFUL..........JUST HORRIBLE!!..THE GIRL CAN'T SING............HEY SCARLETT DO US A FAVOR STICK TO THE ACTING!!!!

66. Kate Nicole -
she should just stick to what she already does well - acting. leave the singing to the singers.

Remove the context of "actor turned singer" from this debate, and this is interesting but not very compelling. Mostly the production is cool, but it does truly drag. Not Scarlett's fault! A worthy homage, though...

Hey Jbashful! I wish I could report abuse for bad taste.

First: It is possible her voice might be interesting, but it was mixed back so far, who could tell? Second: Does she remotely understand she has a major responsibility? She is the Grace Kelly of the 21st century, whether she likes it or not. We don't have anyone like her. We really don't need her to record these incredibly sad, depressing songs. On the other hand, she's an artist, and I can't tell her not too -- but I wish she wouldn't. If her voice was as pretty as her face, she'd be better off singing fun, upbeat songs, maybe have a one-off hit, and people would love it. It's disturbing what she or her handlers chose for her "debut." Third, the video is absolutely unforgivably bad. Inexcusable. The woman can just walk into a room and light it up -- this is what they decided to "film" to "enhance" the song? Awful, horrid, ghastly. Who is that child lounging on the rug in the middle of it? This is a very, very disturbing video. Why do we want to see someone put on her make-up and cover her tattoo? What is the point? Tragic and disturbing.

The commercials sounded better =/

My.....a bunch of Simon wannabes out there - it wasn't that bad, come on! She's in need of some vocal coaching and a re-mix that doesn't overwhelm her voice. I can't say what I think of her album itself as it's not out yet but I'm glad she doesn't sound like "just another actress trying to be a singer" and I'm glad she doesn't sound like anything we've all heard ten thousand times already on every "idol" show on the telly....that's old - there's a deep quality to her voice and it'd be interesting to see what she can do with it with some proper training. Good luck to her.

The song was just weird for me. Felt like I was in a labyrith and I just coudn't wait for the song to end. That said, the video was pretty cool. The reality vibe makes it edgy. Scarlett looked pretty sweet. But she sure sounded like she's hiding behind the song. There was just no connection.

77. EAJ -
One million indie kids have dreamed of covering Tom Waits and actually getting paid for it. Please, for the love of good taste and well-deserved effort, boycott this album. Scarlett can earn her keep with her acting.

78. jellies -
kinda sad. This got good reviews? Shows what these people know. I guess I'll have to hear the rest of the album. Love Scarlett, but she's not such a good singer.

79. Helen D -
that was pretty darn good. the video didnt add much.

80. Yahoo! Music User -
