Scarlett Johansson: One Of The Most Brilliant Records You'll Hear This Year, Honestly

Posted Fri May 2, 2008 12:18pm PDT by Dan Martin in The NME Blog

When Scarlett Johansson's name was linked to the role of Courtney Love in the forthcoming adaptation of Kurt biopic Heavier Than Heaven, it was a rumour we were inclined to believe. Not just because of insider knowledge, but because we at NME had heard word that Scarlett was about to do a pretty decent turn as a rock star in her own right.

Buzz around her debut album as a real-life muso, Anywhere I Lay My Head, has been buzzing for a while now. And this week it arrived in the postbags of us U.K. journalists.

And simply: Wow.

If you thought a Hollywood A-lister recording an album of Tom Waits covers sounded like a folly too far, it's because you couldn't have imagined a Hollywood A-lister could throw such a totemic curveball of a vocal performance. She sounds like Nico, only grander, and more like a space alien. And possibly even more nonchalant and detached. It's like Dusty Springfield was in My Bloody Valentine.

All complete with breathtaking production from Dave Sitek--named only last week in NME as the number-one most exciting futurist innovator operating in music right now. And guest vocals from David Bowie. And guitars from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner. What's not to go silly over?

With Amy Winehouse turning Bond Girl (sorta), barriers are becoming nicely blurred by a new generation of she-rockers who recall an older kind of star magic. A fantasy line between futurist music and old-school Hollywood.

We're not so sure about today's news that Nicole Kidman (a woman last heard duetting "Somethin' Stupid" with Robbie Williams) is going to produce and star in a movie about Dusty Springfield, but you can't have everything:

Check out a future issue of NME for an exclusive in-depth interview with Scarlett herself, and try and cross your legs until Anywhere I Lay My Head is released later this month, because it will slay you.

I liked it. I didn't think it was the most *amazing* thing, but I thought she did a pretty good job with the song. And the background vocals from Bowie didn't hurt. ha :)

kinda gave off a Sinead O'Connor-like vibe. her voice is just as flat, unfortunately. did she make this because she had two singing lines in that Will.I.Am song promoting Obama and someone told her she should persue it? not a wise choice, IMO. =/

Why do so many of you think that singers cannot be actors and actors cannot be singers? Ever hear of musical theatre? MANY people are able to do both equally well.

not too bad.....i saw somewhere she did a soundtrack for a movie, i'm not too suprised she's making an album now, i wish her luck.

yeah, that was pretty awful. sounded like a tone-deaf church choir singing for a homemade fan video of Scarlett Johansson. one out of five stars for me for this song.

i hate to say it, but i actually like Paris Hilton's single, "Stars are Blind", better, but only sightly.

omg this song was awful i think i was possessed when i listened the first 30 seconds neva again will i make myself suffer like dat..but hey at least she tried

90. Roxie -
I'm glad she's not trying to sound like Mariah or any other pop star. Her Sound is artsy and different not trying to fit in like everyone else.

It's different, but I liked it. She doesn't show amazing vocal range here, but maybe in her album.

I actually liked it. It's an unexpected throwback. The vocals aren't stellar, but i don't mind it fot this song. I'll have hear the rest of th album to really form an opinion.

Scarlett Sings Better than Britney can Act (or be a parent). So there: WAY TO GO, SCARLETT!

JUST THE FIRST FEW NOTES AND I HAD TO TURN IT OFF!!! WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS SHE THINKING THAT SHE COULD SING!! SOMEONE MUST HAVE TOLD HER SHE COULD!! STICK TO BAR SINGING AT LEAST THAT WAY THEY ARE TO DRUNK TO EVEN CARE WHAT SHE IS SAYING!! NO GRAMMYS FOR HER!!

Was that David Bowie singing on the last part of the 'song'? I am confused. Not because of what I heard but by the who I heard. First of all, Scarlett is a beautiful girl, no one denies that. Her voice always sounds sexual, no matter what movie she does or what interview she is on. But having that voice incorporated with different musical instruments/electronic/strange sounds, just drags on and on. Yes yes, this is a song of a girl who is expected to always be on top, and yes there will be a time when she does fall down, but I was expecting that she would not take us down with her. It was a good try, I will reserve a 'love it' or 'hate it' comment untill I hear more songs on you tube (for free of course!).

You see that beautiful face and you expect the beautiful voice to go along with it. Unfortunately, they are polar opposites! Not the worst I've heard, but singing is definitely not her forte'.

I mean, it was a'ight. But her voice is nothing special. I really have no idea what the song was about because she just couldn't pull me in. I did hear David Bowie tho. I dunno, I'd have to hear more of the album before I made up my mind.

Ughhh i HATED it, Scarlett should stick to acting,..who told her she could sing?
