Marching For Emo

Posted Fri May 30, 2008 11:35am PDT by Dan Martin in The NME Blog

The suicide of 13-year-old Hannah Bond was a tragedy, but emo music is not to blame. And tomorrow, an estimated thousand music fans will march on the offices of a U.K. newspaper in an attempt to point that out.

Emo music, and My Chemical Romance in particular, have been under an unpleasant spotlight in the U.K. this month since a depressed teenager from Kent took her own life. And the fact that she was a fan of the genre has been blamed.

The scapegoating of alternative music in the press is nothing new. But what's all the more disturbing about this case is that the coroner singled out the emo genre as playing a part in Hannah's death. Roger Sykes said, "The emo overtones concerning death and associating it with glamour I find very disturbing."

This was all the Daily Mail newspaper needed to revive their crusade against a culture that actually has much more to do with uniting people and sending a message of hope. Nevertheless, they whipped up another editorial about this apparent "suicide cult" designed to panic parents, even going as far as to make inaccurate claims that MCR's "Black Parade" is "a place where all emos believe they go when they die."

My Chemical Romance spoke up because they had to, sending condolences to Hannah's family, but pointing out that: "My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans.

"The message and theme of our album The Black Parade is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on our album states, 'I am not afraid to keep on living'--a sentiment that embodies the band's position on hardships we all face as human beings."

The Daily Mail whipping up fear and misunderstanding is nothing new either, but the fans who feel this music has helped them through their problems, not exacerbated them, are not standing for it.

Tomorrow, an estimated thousand fans will march upon the newspaper's London offices, in a show of solidarity, and respect for Hannah. Organizer Anni Smith told NME.com: "The [Daily Mail 's] words 'suicide cult' really stand out for me, because it's just so far from the truth. As a fanbase it's such an insult because we fight so hard and so many of us suffer from depression, and we fight every day to ward it off.

"The way [many teenagers are] fighting it is with My Chemical Romance's help and it's just such an insult to tell us that the last thing we have to hold on to and the last thing that's keeping us alive is killing us, because it's not."

NME.com will be at the march tomorrow.

wow, to take a song that seriously is stupid. they should not blame the lyrics, they should blame the kids who take it to the max.

42. sarah -
its so rong how they can just blame the music because mcr is trying to help the emos survive their pain!!!!!

I think it is so incredibly misguided to blame music for the decisions of anyone. Honestly, what kind of coroner even thinks that he should signal out a music genre as a cause of death? Isn't his job to simply identify what, why, where and so on? That poor girl's suicide is tragic in the extreme, there is nothing to be said against that. But in classic British tabloid fashion, the Daily Mail made certain assertions without checking facts or even talking to MCR about it. That is ridiculous. Get your facts straight, then report.

To the people that are marching and for the rest us all over the world that will be there in spirit: you better get it!

Firstly, MCR isn't emo. Just listen to them; they're something totally different. Was is emo anymore, anyway?

Secondly, music doesn't make people kill themselves. People who think that are just ignorant. Everyone else here has already put it beautifully...

My Chemical Romance changes lives. Not destroys them. People should just take the time to listen to them. *sigh*

This is my first time ever leaving a comment on here... but I felt so strongly about this, I just needed to let my voice be her.

Good luck, all you protesting Demolition Lovers! You'll make the boys proud. :)

Daily Mail -- is that one of Murdoch's papers?

THIS IS REDICULOUS I LISTEN TO ALTERNATIVE AND EMO MUSIC AND I AM NOT EMO BUT IT IS A MUSIC PERFERENCE! I SAW MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE IN CONCERT ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND THEY SAID AND I QUOTE" YOU NEED TO EXPRESS YOURSELF IN ANYWAY POSSIBLE EXCEPT VIOLENCE" THEYRE GREAT GUYS AND MUSIC SHOULDNT BE TO BLAME FOR SOMETHING THEY CANT CONTROL, LIKE THIER FANS

48. Yahoo! Music User -
That is absolutley ridiculous especially considering the coroner ruled out the emo genre. I bet they haven't ruled out that oh, maybe hannah's parents were divorced, or maybe she was unpopular, or maybe she even had a mental illness, but emo music is not to blame!

wow. I thought it was pretty outragous to blame what people call "emo" music for this girl's death was pathetic. It's sad that Hannah commited suicide, but seriously you can't blame it on music. And when I got to the part about how "The Black Parade is a place where emos believe they will go when they die", I seriously started laughing my head off. How rediculous! As any MCR fan would say, The Black Parade is about death. People need to think about who they blame in scenerios such as this. I wish I was in England, so I could go to that march. Oh well.

It is so pathetic that people actually blamed My Chemical Romance for a suicide. Yes, My Chemical Romance could be defined as an "emo" band, and yeah, they're not the kind of music that makes you want to skip through a field of flowers singing "Joy to the World", but come on people! Their music is about continuing through life even when it's hard, and standing up for what is right. You cannot blame MCR for something like this because their music is inspirational and if you listen closely, you can define it's true meaning: to "keep on living." Mourn the loss of Hannah, but do not blame those who had no connection.

im personally shock im a huge MCR fan. im outraged that they blame anyone death on a specific genre. i myself am an emo kid and i find my solace in the song Black Parade and i send my thoughts and heart out with those marching and for the family of that poor girl. u cant blame the music all of us have some secrets that plague us.

52. Slosh -
personally, i HATE emo, but that's my preference.

We would not have good music if we let the people censor free thought and free expression. Again, i am not associating EMO with good music, but someone's gotta make it...

marilyn manson took the same hit for columbine, never was the same after that. Watch his interviews and realize how hard he took it. You can scapegoat all you want, but you're not going to change the fact that the world is never fair, people hurt other people and themselves sometimes regardless the jams they dig on.

53. Mia -
Well first of all, let me just express how incompetent and uneducated the person who wrote this sounds. "Emo is a genre of music, not a type of person. Also, the My Chemical Romance album titled "The Black Parade" is considered "alternative" NOT "emo!" On of the things that bothers me the most is when people who do not have any exposure of affiliation with the subculture of the people who feel "emo"(which is just short for EMOtional) automatically think that they can relate and know everything that goes through the mind of one of these people. They cannot relate at all, and have no idea what goes through their heads. And if the girl was suicidal, there were obviously signs, that the girl's friends and family should have been able to spot. Instead of blaming it in a band, maybe you could blame it on something realistic, like depression. The band, My Chemical Romance, has always had a very positive message to bring. They have never supported self harm, violence, suicide, or anything of that nature. At the end of the "Teenagers" music video, they state, "Violence is never the answer. If you feel like acting out, reach out. Go to NATIONALSAVE.ORG or any other youth violence prevention source for information on ho how find an alternative to violence." They also to not affiliate themselves with the "emo culture in any way"

54. MarisaT -
it is always easier to point the blame on something else, than to face the truth. in this case, blaming music is easier than facing the truth of this girls life. maybe she was depressed? maybe she had no friends? who knows-but the point is, lets not blame her or her family, lets blame the music she listened to because we dont like it, i swear, it amazes me how stupid people are, and what they will say and do

55. Jealousy W -
My Chemical Romance isnt emo for one. for two i hate how people judge artists because they sang one line that somebody cant relate to. Please dont blame mcr for this tradgety!

56. rich -
WHOS to blame.....the PARENTS...paln and simple...home life...is first!

57. Yahoo! Music User -
Poor girl, I feel bad that she felt she had no other way to got but to take her own life. This has an dejavu feeling for me, as a member of "older" (ugh!) generation, this is very similar to when they put Judas Priest on trial here in the States for a fan's suicide. Thankfully they were not convicted. Also blaming Ozzy for another fans suicide, with his Mr. Crowley song as the culprit. Its the same story, its a slow news day so they make up some ridiculous story to sell some papers. The difference this time instead of Heavy Metal they are substituting Emo as the key word. My heart goes out to the girls family as they must have so much to deal with and now this.

58. chelsea winn -
my chemical romance is a good band ths song that they are sing are not tell you to kill your self but they been through tought times
so parents blame the music hey i listen to them and i didn't kill my self.so its not there fault,so why blame them, she decide to kill her self not them.so mychemical romance is a good band if you don't like it oh well get over it kids love and so does teenagers these days

59. Brittney -
OHMYGOSH. People are so stupid! My goodness. I'm a teenager and I love My Chemical Romance. They are my all-time favorite band BUT I DO NOT believe that when I die I will go to the "Black Parade". That's just insane. Geez, and adults think we teenagers are...hmm..whats the word...imature? Psh. Sounds to me like they're the ones that are imature.

60. Adriianna -
WHAT!!!!
well first of all its not fair and reasonable what MCR is doing to panic at the disco!and about that death im very sorry, even though nobody can clarify exactly whos fault was it.
