Marching For Emo

Posted Fri May 30, 2008 11:35am PDT by Dan Martin in The NME Blog

The suicide of 13-year-old Hannah Bond was a tragedy, but emo music is not to blame. And tomorrow, an estimated thousand music fans will march on the offices of a U.K. newspaper in an attempt to point that out.

Emo music, and My Chemical Romance in particular, have been under an unpleasant spotlight in the U.K. this month since a depressed teenager from Kent took her own life. And the fact that she was a fan of the genre has been blamed.

The scapegoating of alternative music in the press is nothing new. But what's all the more disturbing about this case is that the coroner singled out the emo genre as playing a part in Hannah's death. Roger Sykes said, "The emo overtones concerning death and associating it with glamour I find very disturbing."

This was all the Daily Mail newspaper needed to revive their crusade against a culture that actually has much more to do with uniting people and sending a message of hope. Nevertheless, they whipped up another editorial about this apparent "suicide cult" designed to panic parents, even going as far as to make inaccurate claims that MCR's "Black Parade" is "a place where all emos believe they go when they die."

My Chemical Romance spoke up because they had to, sending condolences to Hannah's family, but pointing out that: "My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans.

"The message and theme of our album The Black Parade is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on our album states, 'I am not afraid to keep on living'--a sentiment that embodies the band's position on hardships we all face as human beings."

The Daily Mail whipping up fear and misunderstanding is nothing new either, but the fans who feel this music has helped them through their problems, not exacerbated them, are not standing for it.

Tomorrow, an estimated thousand fans will march upon the newspaper's London offices, in a show of solidarity, and respect for Hannah. Organizer Anni Smith told NME.com: "The [Daily Mail 's] words 'suicide cult' really stand out for me, because it's just so far from the truth. As a fanbase it's such an insult because we fight so hard and so many of us suffer from depression, and we fight every day to ward it off.

"The way [many teenagers are] fighting it is with My Chemical Romance's help and it's just such an insult to tell us that the last thing we have to hold on to and the last thing that's keeping us alive is killing us, because it's not."

NME.com will be at the march tomorrow.

You know, all those suicide bombers are doing it because they are promised great rewards in the after life, so why are governments not attacking their religion when a 13-year-old commits suicide? Oh right, because the chick was just too weak to go on living. Not musics fault. Not religions fault. Not video games fault. It was her own fault.

People can be dumb and sheepish. This is a good example of how people can be influenced by media that is misinformed and something bad intending. This is not surprised to me about putting the blame on entertained media like music. I have seen this song and dance before with Manson in his most exposted time. I may have being raised on classier, metal, puck, alternative rock, and about everything else under the sun, Emo or Emotional Hard Core, is cool even dose mean of my punk and metal friends thinks it is stupid and think I am crazy for liking My Chemical Romance or emo in general. Just because someone is exposed to something dark, manged of death, and suicide, doesn't mean that are going to hurt themselves. Sometimes the dumb in a small number that yell loud and are annoying enough, people will listen if it feed ed off our fear of the unknown, like why some people do the things that do. lodged is toes out the window, blame and Etruria takes over like it has now. This will happen again in the future because people wants something to blame when something happen, like dead in this case. This fear had happen with rock, punk, and now emo.

MCR has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with that death...i just recently became an MCR fan and their lyrics r about life not murder or suicide. the fact that the genre is put to blame is just flat out wrong!

wow,i didn't think ppl will take emo muzic seriously.emo = emotional. i actually RESPECT emo ppl. you cant blame them for who they are.and so what a person is a big fan of a emo band it doesn't mean they have to blame it on the band for their son or daughter committing suicide. they might have had problems in their life or maybe even relationships that have been really complicated. you never know!! (wow i cant believe they dont even have "emo" in their dictionary!!)

My thoughts go out to the girls family. I do not think you should blame the music for what happen, she made that chose herself, it is not the music fault because if you are going to blame the music thin alot more young ladys would be in danger themself, look at the rap music videos, the ladys in those videos are barly wearing anything, they have the body that will get them what they want, and, young ladys are looking at these videos thinking they need to look like that and be like that and they should have to think that way all those rap vidios are just telling young kids that they have to be very good looking with the great body to get what they want and thats not true and thin once year you have these rap singers doning one good video a year talking about you can do anything when you put your mind to it lets make peace, well you know all there vieos should be of that, and not haveing these half dressed ladys in them talking about shake your butt all over the place and you will go far with anything. not everybody looks like that , and anyone and everyone can be what they want to be with out haveing to show everything they have. So don't blame MCR, the only one to know why this happen is gone don't blame the family don't blame the friends, because truly no one will ever know at this point why it happen

i bet if they walked a week - a day! in this girl's shoes, they would understand. mcr type music is comforting. i listen to angry music when i'm really mad, and i get angrier in a way, but i feel better. If i was in London, i would be marching. If it were possible, i would've went, even though i live in michigan, usa. My Chemical romance shouldn't be blamed for anyone's death, considering they're trying to "bring a message", to "save kid's life". Gerard Way has said himself that he wants to save kids lives. Its sounds like i'm being sarcastic when i'm quoting gerard, but im totally serious and i truly feel sorry for Hannah, that she lost her life, and mcr, for being blamed.

i would feel terrible if i was blamed for someones death, when i was trying to save them.

71. Kitty -
ive been in the "emo" scene for years and never once even thought about killing myself and i havent heard any songs really that encouraged me to do so especially from MCR. this is just the case of someone playing the blame game.

72. Luis -
they just wanted 2 sell more papers.. bad strategy, very irresponsable action from them

73. Paige -
KEEP ON MARCHING FOR HANNAH!

I am a parent. I am a parent that listens to MCR. I love The Black Parade and understand the hope that comes of it. Some people just refuse to open their minds to anything. It's a shame that people continue to waste energies at nonsense such as this. There are other things going on in this world that are more pressing. I mean no disrespect towards the Bond family, their loss is insurmountable. I am sure they will find a way 'to keep on living'.

75. Meg -
That is stupid. Music does not define your lifestyle, rather, music is a part of your lifestyle. While I am not an avid listener of MCR, I respect them, and have listened to their song, "The Black Parade". The song says nothing about dying, suicide, etc. I am very sorry that this girl died and offer my condolences to her family. But they should not be claiming that the music she listened to was to blame for this tragedy.

76. K.N.G -
I think that its stupid that the first thing the press blame is the music. She was only 13!?! What about her parents? Are parents not to blame for anything anymore??

77. brianna -
Okay so first of all My Chemical Romance is not emo!! And no band should be blamed for Hannah Bond's Death. And My Chemical Romance is antisuicide and antivolience. If some stupid reporter listen to their music maybe they would trash mcr. MCR saves a lot of lives. And the daily mail can go to someplace bad.

78. dani -
i was apauled to read this. MCR's music has saved many lives of young adults. The words that they sing are strong and meaningful and myself as a fan of MCR can tell you that when I listen to them I do not nor have I ever wanted to commit suicide! Many of lyrics that they have sung have helped me in the past. It is a great loss that this girl has taken her own life. I send my deepest thoughts of sympathy to the family of Hannah. However music is not to blame, please look deeper for the cause! March on in the UK for those of us who can not back in the US

79. Cassie -
i hadnt herd about Hannah untill i read this. its so stupid to say a band caused this tragedy, its no ones fault. maybe she just couldnt handle life, its no ones fault. the fact is they just want someone to blame so it seems like the music is what brings teens down when actually sometimes its the only thing that gives me (us) hope this is stupid and uncalled for.
MCR you have no blame in this and i hope you guys dont feel you do.

80. Holli D -
This is retarded actually My Chemical Romance SAVED my life I use to cut and My Chemical Romance helped me stop thank you its her fault shes dead
