Marching For Emo

Posted Fri May 30, 2008 11:35am PDT by Dan Martin in The NME Blog

The suicide of 13-year-old Hannah Bond was a tragedy, but emo music is not to blame. And tomorrow, an estimated thousand music fans will march on the offices of a U.K. newspaper in an attempt to point that out.

Emo music, and My Chemical Romance in particular, have been under an unpleasant spotlight in the U.K. this month since a depressed teenager from Kent took her own life. And the fact that she was a fan of the genre has been blamed.

The scapegoating of alternative music in the press is nothing new. But what's all the more disturbing about this case is that the coroner singled out the emo genre as playing a part in Hannah's death. Roger Sykes said, "The emo overtones concerning death and associating it with glamour I find very disturbing."

This was all the Daily Mail newspaper needed to revive their crusade against a culture that actually has much more to do with uniting people and sending a message of hope. Nevertheless, they whipped up another editorial about this apparent "suicide cult" designed to panic parents, even going as far as to make inaccurate claims that MCR's "Black Parade" is "a place where all emos believe they go when they die."

My Chemical Romance spoke up because they had to, sending condolences to Hannah's family, but pointing out that: "My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans.

"The message and theme of our album The Black Parade is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on our album states, 'I am not afraid to keep on living'--a sentiment that embodies the band's position on hardships we all face as human beings."

The Daily Mail whipping up fear and misunderstanding is nothing new either, but the fans who feel this music has helped them through their problems, not exacerbated them, are not standing for it.

Tomorrow, an estimated thousand fans will march upon the newspaper's London offices, in a show of solidarity, and respect for Hannah. Organizer Anni Smith told NME.com: "The [Daily Mail 's] words 'suicide cult' really stand out for me, because it's just so far from the truth. As a fanbase it's such an insult because we fight so hard and so many of us suffer from depression, and we fight every day to ward it off.

"The way [many teenagers are] fighting it is with My Chemical Romance's help and it's just such an insult to tell us that the last thing we have to hold on to and the last thing that's keeping us alive is killing us, because it's not."

NME.com will be at the march tomorrow.

I would be more upset with the Parents of this Poor girl for not talking to her,Sign's are very visible in a child of that age,Her Parent's had to of known there was something Bothering her,Shame on them for not making her open up or trying to talk to her...Don't blame Musicians who don't "Provoke" But rather "Evoke"...

MCR is my favorite band. people who can't bother to do the research on what being emo really means shouldn't look to say she got the idea of suicide from MCR.

That is so great that all those fans are getting together and speaking out against this. Those people need to seriously see it in the girl's eyes. Why would they blame MCR for this? It's not their fault. She brought it upon herself to die, their music, or anyone else's for that matter, had done this to her. Sure, it was a tragedy, and yes, she was a very beautiful girl, but why would they blame this on a band? The band's music is very good, and they only want to see their fans happy. If you listen to their music really carefully it speaks out AGAINST stuff like this. Not persuading you to do it. It's very sad that this had to happen. And may Hannah Bond Rest in Peace. And the people in the UK keep the MCRmy going.

i think it's wrong to blame any one genre of music.

I'm sure if they do a little research they'll find that the poor little girl has a screwed up family and didn't choose to end her life because of an "emo" band.

Think about it all people have a bad moments in life so people listen to music to let it out of there system . But people w/ depression like some emos not all take the music too seriously . Now i am a emo and i love the music of mcr and i don't take there music that seriously that i go out the next day and kill myself. Somtimes its the pearents fulit because they don't understand their child and they need to for like what happend to the girl .

i dont think the music is 2 blame at ALL because i LOVE this band and im not even close 2 comitting suicide. and like they said they send out messages of hope if u REALLY listen 2 the lyrics 2 their songs, just cause they wear kulls and black and eberything u cant just bame them like that.

108. Jelissa -
u REALLY should listen 2 the lyrics of the song Famous Last Words.

i feel bad for Hannah's family and their loss. but listening to emo music, and MCR in particular did not make that girl commit suicide. she had to already be depressed so why didn't her family, friends or teachers see that? no, you can't blame the people who were closest to her, so blame it on the music she listened to. millions of people, including myself, like this type of music and they don't kill themselves. sorry to be so blunt, but this girl could have been saved if her family or friends could see the signs of depression. don't blame it on the music she listened to.

i would like to add to my recent comment.
when my beautiful aunt died of breast cancer last year, it was comforting to me when i listened to my MCR cd. they are not promoting death, they are celebrating life. i'm 54 yrs old and if i was in England i would be protesting along with the young people.
really listen to MCR and you can learn the truth.

People shouldn't blame emo music for someone elses problems. Music doesn't have anything to do with it. Sometimes people just don't see another way out of their problems and there is usually something wring with that person in the first place.

Thats sad that the girl is dead but i'm an emo music fan and its not mcr's fault she was stupid enuf 2 think that suicide would help b/c all she did was cause more pain & suffering 4 her family

Music genres don't convince kids to commit suicide, its the people in their world that push them to far over the edge

I listen to 10 minutes of CLASSICAL music, and I want to scream!!! I really hate it. I didn't understand when my daughter was depressed why she listened to more depressing music. Until one day I listened to it. I like the genre, very much. I feel awful for the parents, I can't even begin to imagine how I would feel if I lost my child to depression or suicide. I'd look at WHO around her might have forced her even consider suicide as an option. Kids can be very cruel to alternative or emo kids.

it is ridiculous to blame music for this incident, but emo music and the image and attitude that it embodies does alienate a listener from others. I would also like to point out that emo music is basically as simple as cavemen banging rocks together only you have to replace the cavemen with girly bisexual men. Emo music has to be the lowest form of rock ever created.

118. Macy G -
its rediculous to blame music for suicide if anything music makes people feel beter when their suicidal at leats it does 4 me

119. Yahoo! Music User -
My Chemical Romance isnt emo they dont cut themselves either. that was the own girls' fault. stop writing things that arent true!!!! }=-(

Now, while the band themselves cannot be blamed, who can say that the genre of music mentioned does not keep the thought of suicide in young adult's heads? It's a very dark kind of genre, and while the music itself is good, these emo bands need to find a way more positive to express what they are trying to do. I watched the video for "Welcome to the Black Parade" and I was sickened! The whole song is about death! It's no wonder, when thousands of marchers look like death worn over. If MCR wants to lift their listeners above death, they should find a better way to do so.
