Marching For Emo

Posted Fri May 30, 2008 11:35am PDT by Dan Martin in The NME Blog

The suicide of 13-year-old Hannah Bond was a tragedy, but emo music is not to blame. And tomorrow, an estimated thousand music fans will march on the offices of a U.K. newspaper in an attempt to point that out.

Emo music, and My Chemical Romance in particular, have been under an unpleasant spotlight in the U.K. this month since a depressed teenager from Kent took her own life. And the fact that she was a fan of the genre has been blamed.

The scapegoating of alternative music in the press is nothing new. But what's all the more disturbing about this case is that the coroner singled out the emo genre as playing a part in Hannah's death. Roger Sykes said, "The emo overtones concerning death and associating it with glamour I find very disturbing."

This was all the Daily Mail newspaper needed to revive their crusade against a culture that actually has much more to do with uniting people and sending a message of hope. Nevertheless, they whipped up another editorial about this apparent "suicide cult" designed to panic parents, even going as far as to make inaccurate claims that MCR's "Black Parade" is "a place where all emos believe they go when they die."

My Chemical Romance spoke up because they had to, sending condolences to Hannah's family, but pointing out that: "My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans.

"The message and theme of our album The Black Parade is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on our album states, 'I am not afraid to keep on living'--a sentiment that embodies the band's position on hardships we all face as human beings."

The Daily Mail whipping up fear and misunderstanding is nothing new either, but the fans who feel this music has helped them through their problems, not exacerbated them, are not standing for it.

Tomorrow, an estimated thousand fans will march upon the newspaper's London offices, in a show of solidarity, and respect for Hannah. Organizer Anni Smith told NME.com: "The [Daily Mail 's] words 'suicide cult' really stand out for me, because it's just so far from the truth. As a fanbase it's such an insult because we fight so hard and so many of us suffer from depression, and we fight every day to ward it off.

"The way [many teenagers are] fighting it is with My Chemical Romance's help and it's just such an insult to tell us that the last thing we have to hold on to and the last thing that's keeping us alive is killing us, because it's not."

NME.com will be at the march tomorrow.

I have a cousin who is emo and he seems very happy. If someone is to blame it would be the parents who did not see the signs that her girl had problems. It's really very sad that society has to find a scapegoat and not have the ability to confront the problem and find a solution.

i listen to emo music as well. u dont see me comitting or even thinking about suicide. the music is not to blame. some people's depression is just too great and they cant handle it. the music didnt lead her to suicide, the depression did.

once again people decide to attack emos. Honestly people need to stop with these crazy accusations. MCR's music has kept many of my friends alive and I can't believe that the stupid people in the Daily Mail have the nerve to blame music for someone's death. They know absolutely nothing

125. Ashley -
how can someone blame someones death on a genre of music? i love MCR and their lyrics are very anti violent. im so sorry about the loss of the Bond family as well

Emo music is not to blame for some girl committing suicide. Music did not influence her to kill herself! She decided to kill herself, the music was not telling her! The Black Parade is a song you can easily tell isn't telling people to kill themeslves, the lyric, I Am Not Afraid To Keep On Living, is not influencing suicide on kids! Its retarded how they can blame ONE genre or band! Just because one girl who likes MCR kills herself doesn't mean its the music. Many people commit suicide and just because one 13 year old girl does who likes MCR THEY HAVE TO BLAME THEM!

thats bull.emo music is like all others. it's way of expression. to also single out certain bands is stupid.

128. Ms.Cullen -
That is so stupid! I listen to MCR every day! And I have no thoughts of suicide! I am perfectly happy!! Maybe something else was bothering her no one ever knows why people comment suicide, but for music? Thats ridiculous

i aint emo or nuthin but i happen to like mcr's music...and like most people i've been depressed and the only thing that seemed to help was music...and none of it ever made me even think about killing myself or anything...it was usually stuff my parents and people around me said or did that made me depressed and the fact that it seemed like there was no one there for me to talk to...i imagine thats probably what this girl was goin through...so its not the musics fault, its kinda the peoples around her for not noticing something was wrong...but then agian maybe it was just her time to go or something

i do feel sorry for hannah but still why blame a freakin band for her death!! isn't that ridiculous!!! im a big fan of MCR !! mean, i hope they dont ban MCR! _

Blaming emo music for the reason of Hannah's death is absolutely ridiculous! Especially blaming My Chemical Romance. Their songs have helped me, personally, deal with problems I've had with the world. If not for them, I probably would have done something horrible to myself!

132. Abby -
blaming a genre of music is just the stupidest thing i ever herd! A- she had the coice of listening to the music ot not -and- B- the band was simply expression their feeling and not necessarly tell anyone to do anything

133. Volleyball Queen -
Just because you listen to a certain type of music doesn't make you emo, prep, etc. Labels I think are for cans we can't categorize someone by the way they dress, act or what they do. They shouldn't blame My Chemical Romance for the death of that girl. Labels have nothing to do with death you make your own decisions on whether you want to live or die. I listen to some emo/rock/alternative rock/ etc. and you don't see me cutting myself or acting strange. I know some of that music can be strange but the side effects of music are NOT suicide! Young people Label others to much maybe other people made fun of her for liking that kind of music. It's ridiculous how some people can act to their fellow man. If people wouldn't label each other as "Jock", "Prep", "Emo", "Goth", etc. i think the world would be a less violent place. Remember, "Labels are for cans!"

134. Yahoo! Music User -
Hmph. They haven't heard about how emo kids are treated in Mexico...

135. -
As a fan, and a parent blaming MCR is absolutely ridiculous. Both of my teens have been suicidal. MCR actually stopped my daughter from going through with it. The problem is not the music but the parents who don't acknowledge that their child is in pain and needs help. This inability to recognize and accept their child has a real problem and their not getting the help is what leads to suicide. MCR Rock on.

136. DavidC -
If someone wants to commit suicide no music is to blame. I don't know if anyone remembers but when the Columbine shootings happened music was to blame in that situation. The kids who committed such an act were big fans of Marilyn Manson and Manson's music was supposedly blame for the shooting. Music does not kill people, poor judgment and sometimes even poor parenting does. No music, no matter the genre, should be blamed for suicide or homicide or any sort of crime.

137. Michael D -
i actually just did some research and found out that the reason that most made her want to commit suicide was not music but BULLYING.as a victim myself i cannot believe that her parents, and this paper never found out.and even if they did they never tried to help.i am furious at this newspaper now.if someone had helped this girl, even if they had made an attempt.she would still be here today.at this point i dont feel sorry for her parents,i despise them for jumping to conclusions about the reasons why she was so depressed, blaming your kids musical interests and induviduality is not the answer.she probably went on the internet(as i do)so she would have someone to talk to,them not listening must have torn her heart in two.for some reason,i just know that she had tried to tell them, that she had tried to get it off her chest.but as always with her and me,they never listen.to all of you thinking of commiting suicide, dont do it,dont think the people you love will be better off without you, because if they truly love you, theyll miss you.dont think that death will end your pain, because it will just cause someone else pain.and dont give in because as my chemical romance says in welcome to the black parade,"we'll carry on".

YES YES YES FINALLY ONE MUSIC NEWS WEBSITE AGREES!!!! My Chem helps kids LIVE and feel better and they are NOT emo. They lyrics to many of their songs have positive messages ("I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk to walk this world alone", "Think happy thoughts", stuff like that). And MCR helped me live through my hardest times when my bf broke up with me AND my 3 best, best, best friends ever (we have been friends since 4th grade!) said that they hated me and no one cares about me. I got REALLY sad and started thinking that no one cared about me, so no one would care if I committed suicide, or if I cut myself. But MCR's quotes and song lyrics say to keep on living and to NEVER do self-harm or suicide. Also Gerard Way says many things about that MCR will always care about their fans and always love them. That made me feel cared about and since I wanted to be a good fan, I stopped the self-harm and thinking about suicide. So you can see, My Chem helped me LIVE not die. And they help a lot of other fans do the same. And still when I feel sad, when I listen to MCR it always makes me feel happy and good :)
here is a video of Gerard talking about suicide. If you want to see more, than look it up on YouTube or something.

this is not right music cant be the cause for her death and i think that the people standing up like this are doing the right thing because the music isnt the cause emo or not

140. Yahoo! Music User -
i for one am a fan of my chemical romance and this is wrong. people are always criticizing bands for things that they are not influencing. my chemical romance should not be blamed for this. this was her choice to do this. rock on my chemical romance!
