Prince Vs. Galactus!

Posted Mon Jul 23, 2007 1:50pm PDT by Dave DiMartino in New This Week

It's a week of spectacular returns! Just ask anybody working behind the counter at a record store! Yep, this week's awe-inspiring release schedule includes the latest from some longtime big names, some unexpectedly groovy discs from former teen faves, and also... Sum 41! All things considered, life could only be better were it I who'd penned the new slogan for Capt. Morgan's Rum--which I saw on a billboard today and am compelled to include here if only to praise its sheer artistry:

"What Rum Would Drink If Rum Could Drink Rum."

Dude: Who says it can't?

***

Prince: Planet Earth (Columbia) He's back, he's playing in tiny hotels, and he's giving his album away to English people who buy newspapers! Yes, it's the fabulous Prince, and his new record is actually very good indeed. Were I the sort of guy who coached careers for a living, I do believe I'd tell the guy that all he really needs now to be back on top is an actual hit record. Because people generally like him but--let's be honest--can't even name a single new song he's written in years. Heck, then I'd probably ask him if he and Queen Latifah were related because of that name thing! Incidentally, judging from that album cover, he's grown a few inches! Cool!

Hanson: The Walk (3CG) If you keep track of stuff like this, here's the scoop: Hanson were a bunch of kiddie brothers who had a fab hit with "MMMbop" that some people liked and others didn't but it didn't matter. And then they didn't go away. Now every review of their new records spends too much time talking about whether liking them should be a "guilty pleasure" or not. Just like this one's doing! So let's mix things up a bit: Hanson are from outer space, like the color burnt sienna best, and collectively share the same set of lungs! This record's pretty good, but like, in light of all that, wow!

Talib Kweli: Ear Drum (Blacksmith/Warner Bros.)  With a list of producers including the marvelous likes of Kanye West and will.i.am, there's every indication Mr. Kweli's new album will be just as good as every other album those guys have had a hand in during the past three years. That's right, all 374 of ‘em!  But then again, Ear Drum features guest appearances from both Norah Jones and Jean Grae, and you know what they say about albums that feature special guests!  Prediction: Ear Drum can't be beat!

Silverchair: Young Modern (Eleven Music) Now here's a group that has continued to improve with every album! Is it any wonder their label has stuck with them through thick and thin? Huh? It is? With a guest appearance by cult biggie Van Dyke Parks and a diverse array of very excellent tuneage, Silverchair should be commended for never really repeating themselves, actually striving to improve with each album, blah-blah-blah. For that matter, bandleader Daniel Johns should also be commended for marrying Natalie Imbruglia a couple of years ago, too! Dude!

Sum 41: Underclass Hero (Island) You can watch a video of Sum 41 performing an Oasis track here, or, if you're like me, you can wonder what exactly the term "underclass hero" means. Is it like "Working Class Hero," but by American guys? Did the band go to a two-story high school?  And was there somebody downstairs doing something really cool at the precise moment their math teacher declared: "And that sum is 41"? Well, the only way we'll ever find out is by listening to this thing! Oh, wait a minute--is that my phone?

The Doors: The Doors At Boston Arena (Bright Midnight Archives/Rhino) Wow! Three discs of unreleased live Doors, all pretty hot, capped by a lead singer who...well, according to drummer John Densmore in the liner notes: "Jimbo is ripped!" Yee-hah! Featuring two complete 1970 shows, the band itself plays especially well; it must've been interesting backing up you-know-who on nights like this. And for anyone who thought the Doors were losing their commercial edge: Check out unreleased track "Adolf Hitler." Pop radio--where were you?

Lonnie Jordan: War Stories (Fantasy/Concord): The first solo album in years from one of the founding members of War--a band whose music sounds better with every passing year--this disc includes some covers of War tracks (including "The World Is A Ghetto") as well as the Stones ("Paint It Black" and Jimi Hendrix ("Third Stone From The Sun"). Glad to see the man still making records, equally glad he's on a good label, and--as they say back east--glad that War is in the news again!

Manic Street Preachers: Send Away The Tigers (Red Ink) The former next big things that never were--at least here in rockin' America--have returned with a relatively strong album that will surprise many! Especially the evil zookeepers who've been keeping them prisoner for the past three years!  Like, I'm not into psychoanalyzing today's wacky pop scene, but is that album title a cry for help or what?

Tiny Vipers: Hands Across The Void (Sub Pop) With a name like Tiny Vipers, you'd expect a solo acoustic female singer-songwriter named Jesy Fortino--and that's just what you'll get here, on her classy Sub Pop debut!  And with an album title like Hands Across The Void, you'd expect an album full of tracks that sound like Paul McCartney songs, only emptier! Yep. Then you'd notice that you need a haircut! Weird!

Tegan And Sara: The Con (Sire/Vapor) Produced by Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla, this new set by rising-star duo Tegan and Sara should be big news. Not least because when people buy it and return it, condescending record store employees will ask them if they noticed the album's name! Critics agree: This CD is what CDs would listen to if CDs could buy CDs!

Talib Kweli may have came in the game with Mos Def & Common on his team-- but since the launch of his new Blacksmith Music shop, he's an island satellite radiating funky waves to the whole hip-hop overground. Expect his trademark heavy lyrics & challenging subjects to push you through this awesome disc chock full of bangin beats from some of the games MVP''s(most valuable producers, a lame acronym but accurate).

Tiny Vipers slithers softly in the brush like an unexpected predator. Her breathy vocal is sweet but quietly lethal. Verses soaked in the venom of real world experience, drink at your own risk.

Tegan & Sara, adorable twins as lovable as Dudley Doo Right of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police riding backward on horseback, oh and just as dangerous...DUN DUN DUN!

"What rum could drink if rum could drink rum" is the best sentence ever written. I stand in awe.

It's a shame that this guy DiMartino seems to look at a successful record via the sales prism. Prince has never went anywhere and never stopped doing great material, but if your nose is up the record company's arse, you would not know that. I wonder how much music this guy has missed because an "artist" has not had a "hit" record. DiMartino you must be a little slow to revel in your life on the margins.

Hey what was your last hit song u wrote ,,u critics kill me u guys get paid 4 something that u probably cant carry a tune of course your comeback is I dont have to be a professional at the genre i critized... duh

Gerry M, please pay attention in english class. Your grammatical errors make it hard for me to take your point seriously. Lets face it, music is a business. If it wasn't would Vanilla Ice be making a reunion tour right now? It does not matter if music is well written anymore, its all about the numbers. Also don't take someones elses opinion of an artist you like so personally. Who cares if anyone else likes the bands that you do? If you like Prince, than don't get all bent out of shape over someone who doesn't.

The new Talib Kweli album is ... is... is, I don't even have have words to express how deeply this album has struck a cord in me! Every sinlge cut on this album has something to say. These young rappers out now don't have anything worth listening to, but they get all the radio play. Well, this just goes to show that you don't need radio play to be heard. "It ain't old school or new school, it's true school rap!" All hail the Blacksmith!

I have been a DIE HARD Prince fan for years!!!! I even have Purple Rain on Beta (for those of you who remember them) Then on VHS, DVD along with the anniverrsary copy, he was my first concert (Love Sexy Tour) first CD and in March, when I was on vacation, I went to his house. I took sooooo many pictures. There was one tree near the gate that had no snow and I grabbed four rocks. Three are in my fish tank and the other was made into a necklace that I PROUDLY wear. I am so glad that he has a new CD release. There is not enough I can say about how much I adore this man. For those that don't care for him....what a shame!! For those of us who are fans....I know that your are just as happy as I am. Much love to him and if there is any chance that He happens to read this I just want to say Thank You....hearing your music is shear pleasure and very much enjoyed.

let the true artist stand on their own without your criticism. the songs they write are expresses because of the things they endure through lifes challenges. going through the challenges also take time. some of us may agree what he is going through some of us may not that is why they have a variety of songs and music to chose from. the best way to allow people to express themself is not trying to break that person down. if we as a society that have a choice don't like what we see or hear then we have that choice to change the channel. ps change the channel

Dave Di martino, Just want to let you know for a music critic you sure are not keeping up with your music each of princes last albums had a hit. 3121 album reached number 1 for a week in 2006 and 2004 musicology raced up the charts and stayed at # 2 for 3 weeks and was the second highest earning artist next to madonna that year with a grammy award just an FYI.

I happen to love Prince. His new CD is good but not as good as 3121. I love that
CD, it has a lot of good songs on it.. How ever I just recently got the Plant Earth CD so there are only a few songs I like on it so far..

All in all I think Prince is a great singer and his band is out rages.. The music is really funky and thats the way I like it...

Someone like "Prince "Rogers Nelson, deserves a worthy and due amount of credit for his ability to stay consistent and up to date with his music. The man has been on wax since 1976 with the creative album FOR YOU.This gives our boy an astonishing 31 years in the business and he is not slowing down. The ability to play about 18 instruments with uncanny skill ranks him high on my list with many of the music greats both living and long since past. You may hate him but you could never compete, berate,or ignore him.I like the guy but not in a hysterical way.I only appreciate his positive impact on music and the artists he has influenced. The list is long,Morris Day,The Time,Vanity 6,Sheila E,Mavis Staples,Patti Labelle,Chaka Khan,Sinead O'Connor,Melissa Morgan,Jesse Johnson,Sheena Easton, and his songs covered by other artists,I Feel for you,Do me Baby,Nothing compares to you,Yo Mister, and on and on.The man is a walking music library. What other artist under 50, has 30 plus albums and still in the primelight and limelight.Much Respect Mr.Prince Rogers Nelson.Amen.

Too many people (critics) try to "figure Prince out" instead of appreciating his music. PRINCE ROGERS NELSON is a musical genius!! I have been a Prince fan since the beginning. Do some research before you put him down, don't try to understand him, appreciate the music! You have got to be crazy if you can say that Prince hasn't had a hit single in years! Where were you in 2004 when "Musicology" produced such hits as "Musicology" and "Call my Name"? So, Mr. DiMartino, before you try to critique an artist such as PRINCE, do your research and gain the knowledge. It's quite evident that you know NOTHING about the GREAT PURPLE ONE. You just might become a fan...it's hard not to!

PRINCE IS IN A CLASS ALL BY HIMSELF. ENOUGH SAID!

the man they call prince? all i can say is he's cold blooded!

I am in agreement w/ some of u, to hear Dave DiMartino say that Prince hasn't had a hit in years is not only not true but disrespectful to not only to Prince but his fans and just about anybody out there who actally listens to music. I am a huge Prince fan regardless of hit records or singles. There is actually a certain pride in knowing that his music is out there for anyone who cares to listen but is not shoved in people's faces like so many other artitst today. I get that the record industry is a business, but one can't deny that when one finds something on their own, something one feels is unique and powerful it can be way more gratifying than having someone like Fergie rammed up our ears. People can have their own opinions about artists, good, bad, whatever. Just get your facts straight and never under estimate Prince fans.
