Did Simon Cowell Drive Nikki McKibbin To Drugs?

Posted Fri Oct 17, 2008 3:48pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

OK, OK, maybe this headline is a bit sensationalistic. But hey, it made you click, right?

It's not a total exaggeration, however: Rainbow-haired American Idol season 1 runner-up Nikki McKibbin did just tell Us Weekly that Simon Cowell's constant criticism, back in the day when she was competing against Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini, eroded her esteem to the point where she became increasingly dependent on booze and drugs.

"I came out of Idol with a lack of self-confidence," she explained. "I had never been told I wasn't good enough. Having to hear it for so many weeks from Simon Cowell killed me inside. I couldn't get the sh*t he had said to me out of my head...It drove me deeper into my depression. I wouldn't say that this was Simon's fault. It just added to the addict that I already was."

Nikki further revealed: "We were heavily chaperoned [on the show], but I would buy vodka and sneak it into the refrigerator on the bottom floor. If I wasn't too exhausted, I'd have one or two drinks."

Wow, so Simon actually has the power to drive women to substance abuse? Well, that would certainly explain some of Paula Abdul's quirky behavior since season 1...

Anyway, the Simon's-needling-and-the-damage-done saga of Nikki McKibbin will be dealt with in-depth next week, when she appears on season 2 of Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew alongside Rod Stewart's obnoxiously over-privileged progeny Sean (of Sons Of Hollywood "fame"), L.A.-riot-inciting Rodney "Can't We All Just Get Along?" King, former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler, some C-list model/actress named Amber Smith, Surreal Life veteran/Whitesnake hood ornament Tawny Kitaen, and lovable "Celebreality" regular Gary Busey.

Hopefully the show will do more for Nikki than it did for Idol alum Jessica Sierra, who relapsed and ended up back in court soon after her stint on Celebrity Rehab season 1 ended...

it does no good to get your rehab done on national tv it's to much pressure and as she already feels that what's the damned point? If she's looking for help get it the right way otherwise frankly it becomes more about extending your 15 minutes of fame

There are legitimate ways to get and remain sober.Until these people get serious, they are only delaying their inevitable relapse. This is not a game.

My God superstars doing drugs (and other illigal substances) how shocking!

Seriously though I do not understand why we are so shocked by this look at all the other bands/artists busted or who have (confessed to) used drugs.

Aerosmith, Boy George(Culture club), Amy Winehouse, John Lennon (and the rest of the Beatles(so I've been told)), Jimi Henderix, Keith Moon (late Who's drummer), Many (if not all) metal bands and hard rock bands, The Rolling stones(I do not know how many or the ones involved), and alot of other realy good musicians.

Basically It is not a rant on music but astonishment at our suprise of a good musician being caught with or doing drugs. There could be a song about doing drugs they could say it with no cover or rhyme amd we would still be suprised when they get caught with heroin in an airport.

P.S. If you have read this all the way thorough you must have ALOT of time on your hands. Oh yes and by the way congrats on wasting your life with reading this summary of my thoughts on a small time music critc's review.

oh please... shut up! Simon isn't that bad, you have to be able to take criticism.. only an addict would blame everyone else
