An American Idol Covers A Brit Idol

Posted Wed Feb 13, 2008 1:29pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

So last night American Idol finally moved away from the Glitter Girls and Temptresses and "No Sex Allowed" novelty songs, and into phase 2 (aka "Hollywood Week"). And I for one was pretty pleased, since overall I've been surprisingly disappointed by season 7's auditioners. I mean, where was this year's William Hung, huh?

Well, never mind all that. I already know who this year's winner is--at least if my speed-dialing skills have anything to do with it.

Yes, I'm declaring an early favorite here: Josiah Leming. The towheaded teen captured my heart last week when he turned on the waterworks while confessing that he lives in his car (I'm a big softie, see) and then sweetly warbled Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" with a faux British accent (I'm an even bigger Anglophile). But Josiah completely won over my heart--and, hopefully, most of America as well--last night, when he chose to cover a Mika song.

Now, while fierce Britfopper Mika is already a massive star in his native U.K. (where he's likely to sweep the Brit Awards next week), he's still no household name on this side of the pond. It's certainly not for lack of U.S. exposure: His body-image anthem "Big Girl" was featured on Ugly Betty; his hi-NRG disco track "Love Today" soundtracked a goofy Motorola Red commercial starring Saturday Night Live's Chris "Mango" Kattan; and he even performed himself on Fox's other Nigel Lythgoe-produced hit reality show, So You Think You Can Dance.

However, it's Josiah Leming's heartfelt cover of Mika's "Grace Kelly" on last night's Idol that just might finally foist the campy Brit idol upon mainstream audiences in America. (Just look at what the show did for Daniel Powter's "Bad Day," for instance, or how Taylor Hicks's performance of "Trouble" boosted folkie Ray Lamontagne's career.) And for that reason alone, Josiah has my vote.

If you're unfamiliar with the original version of "Grace Kelly," click below for Mika's piano-pop performance of the jaunty little number, shot live in the Yahoo! Music studio.

And remember to vote for Josiah next week!

Josiah was an immediate favorite of mine.

I'm so upset that he didn't make it. I can easily say he's been my favorite contestant ever on the show, and I've been watching since season 3.

As talented as Carly is..don't they call it American idol for a reason? If Carly needed a work visa to stay in the country, obviously she's not American. It's just not right.

Who was the last one to make it?? DH and I tivo'd it and the last one got cut out due to the time running over... I hate that lol...Someone please?

Oh...back to the car. poor kid. hope he enjoyed the hotel bed while he had it. Hopefully he'll keep at it -- he is talented, but young. so young. I don't think they were wrong to cut him. He needs to get out there, mature a bit and keep at it. He could be a star with some work.

the plus size model made it...my tivo did the same thing

I also love this guy. He doesn't make it to the top 24, but who cares. He can make it without American idol.

And about his "accent", I actually quite like it. It gets me kinda annoyed when people complain about it.

sooooo long farewell Josiah...I hope you learned a lesson! To stay grounded and humble! Even in tonight's episode he thought he was going to make it to the final 24...confidence is great..but cockiness and getting a big head brings down the best! He sadly had to learn this hard lesson at a young age...he will never forget it. Without this lesson, he would have become one of those celebrities who get out of control believing they are "special" and should be treated as such. I too enjoyed him the first week he was on....but it all was too much too fast. Back to his car, with his tail between his legs....hopefully he has learned this very important lesson...and applies it thruout life.

If Josiah couldn't work with the band on his last song of Hollywood Week, how could he work with all the different guest artists on the show or the show's band. I think he got way overconfident. It's a shame because he did have a good voice. Maybe next year for Josiah after he does some soul searching.

How can anybody who has lived on their own - in a car - at his age - for over a year not have thicker skin? Enough crying. At some point you gotta man up.

I liked the boy but I guess because I felt sorry for him living like he did...and he sang OK...but, he did seem to have an arrogance to him. By the way, he IS NOT British...that was cleared in the original audition. He just has a habit of singing like that because of who he listens to....

I keep reading how talented he is. You've heard him sing for a total of, what, 10 minutes? Sorry, I'm afraid I didn't see that he was talented than many of the others chosen for the top 24. Plus, it's about star quality and I just don't think he's got it. He cries too much.

I hate that Josiah didn't make the top 24. I really liked him he had good potential. The story behind him was heart felt. Anyway for people like him this site would be good to check out. They will send an american idol hopeful to the next auditions all expenses paid. Check it out. http://www.americanidol-auditions.com/

So last night he sings and is off and then his parents were there at the end with him?
He lives in his car but has a myspace & facebook, wow?

he made it seem like he was so homeless, in a car, with few clothes, his parents think he is living with friends, etc. Doing all this to follow his dream IN A CAR. What kind of laptop and internet connection does he have?

He was the most annoying contestant I've ever seen. Could not sing. Cried all the time - how would he ever stand up to the pressures of real fame? I'm honestly amazed he made it through the first round - had assumed it was pity. Completely agree with the Sanjaya comment, except, Sanjaya actually had a better audition than this kid. Now the other 16 y.o. boy (what's his name?) has real talent and has a great attitude.

I HATE anyone that says Josiah is a fake. He was one of the best, is the best singer on American Idol. If you don't think so, just don't say anything.

Loved Josiah's rendition. Loved this article. Alas, only reading it now. Still wish we could vote for him.
