America's Best Quest Crew?

Posted Sun Jan 18, 2009 2:03pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

America's Best Dance Crew 3 premiered this week, and much to my delight, almost all of the crews this season are super-fantastic and funky-fresh, especially the posse of fly girls known as Beat Freaks and the literally freaky quadruple-jointed sideshow crew Ringmasters. However, I have mixed feelings about season 3, because my favorite contestants, Quest Crew, seem to have an unfair disadvantage.

Quest Crew have definitely got it going on, but they also have a few familiar faces in their midst: specifically, three much-loved alumni from another equally awesome competitive dance show, So You Think You Can Dance. Now, MTV has no rules (to my knowledge) that contestants from SYTYCD should be barred from appearing on ABDC, and these Quest Crew members certainly have the talent to compete. But I do think that it's odd that on this week's ABDC3 season premiere the Quest Crew dancers' backgrounds were NEVER mentioned once (particularly suspect considering that ABDC show judge Shane Sparks himself is a SYTYCD veteran and has surely worked with these guys before). Plus, there was no casting special this season to explain how these guys were actually recruited to the finals in the first place.

And of course, as much as I love Quest Crew (they're my faves so far), I do think they have an unfair advantage over the other groups, since they already have a built-in fanbase among the many diehard SYTYCD viewers who also watch ABDC in the off-season. Also...will Shane Sparks be biased? He has a history with these guys, after all.

See, the three SYTYCD alums in Quest Crew are among the most popular SYTYCD contestants in that show's run. Most notably, there's Hok, the cutely cornrowed B-boy who made multiple memorable appearances on the program. Hok auditioned for three SYTYCD seasons straight before finally succeeding (he almost got through once, but visa issues prevented the Tokyo-born, England-based dancer from competing in the U.S.). Then, on SYTYCD season 3, he made it to the top 12.

Then there's another season 3 SYTYCD finalist, Dominic--the adorable showboater with a dopey schoolboy crush on SYTYCD hostess Cat Deeley and a comical inability to differentiate between British and French accents. (He mistook Cat for a Frenchwoman...and who knows, maybe he still thinks Hok is from Paris as well.) Dominic was a lovable charmer and a kickbutt dancer, which helped him get all the way to the top 8 in the show's third season, and will probably help him get far on ABDC, too.

And finally, there's one of SYTYCD's all-time best B-boys, jaw-droppingly brilliant street dancer Ryan. This was a guy whose moves were so unprecedented, they rendered even judge Mia Michaels speechless--and when Mia got her hands on him as a choreographer, she molded him into a surprisingly capable lyrical dancer as well. Additionally, Ryan had distinctively jagged Statue-of-Liberty hair that remained remarkably unmussed no matter how frenetically he busted his moves. (I am kind of surprised a hair-gel endorsement didn't come his way after his SYTYCD star turn.)

Who could ever forget any of these guys?

So, yes, I am torn about Quest Crew. On the plus side, I am thrilled to have these guys back on the air, doing what they do best, what they were born to do: real street dancing, not some stupid cha-cha or paso doble or soft-shoe Broadway routine. But on the minus side, I'm a little concerned that they're going to make the ABDC3 competition unfair for the other crews, due to their additional competitive experience and existing fanbase. And I find ABDC3's total lack of acknowledgement of the boys' background disconcerting--kind of like how I felt when American Idol completely overlooked Carly Smithson's old MCA Records deal last year.

On the other hand, maybe it's Quest Crew who are at somewhat of a disadvantage, as their illustrious SYTYCD credentials may make the judges and viewers hold them to a higher standard. Either way, I look forward to seeing what Quest Crew can do. They better bring it.

Yes it is wrong for Kent H to have an against TOS post. It is an absolutely stupid, unessecary post. But more and more of these spammers keep appearing with generic names.

Such as Kent H

its todays worst spammer

Uhhh. I don't see it being that much of an advantage. E-knock and Jamal from Status Quo (Season 1) both auditioned for SYTYCD. Granted they made it to the end, but that was just because they did a bunch of flips and rolls that wowed the judges. I don't think Shane will be biased. If anything I see him being harder on them if they don't step it up. But, yeah two Status Quo members being on SYTYCD wasn't really given much attention on the first season either. I don't think it should have any affect on whether or not they should be allowed to compete on ABDC. Also, Fly Khicks are dancers for some basketball team in Miami. So, they have a solid fanbase too, I'm sure. I don't think it's that big of a deal. I don't think it'll help or hurt their chances. But, Quest is my favorite crew right now too.

I don't see it as unfair: Jabbawokkeez's Kid Rainen is from Groovaloo, So Real Cru won World of Dance and have a huge fanbase.... and I totally agree with Viciouschick, Shane wouldn't be biased, he was upset that So real cru beat out Fanny Pak because of SRC's fanbase. He is pretty hard on people who can't really dance.

Within my opinion this isn't a problem. Quest is one well balanced crew, they have tricks, and the moves. Them having experience within SYTYCD has NOTHING to do with ABDC. If they are getting votes because of that, its because they can dance! Which is what the whole show is about. Now with So Real Cru I really do believe that they didn't belong in top two, there fan base there was a huge advantage over the competition. The real difference within this situation is that people see that these guys have talent, and believe that they can go all the way. I agree that no one can forget Hok, Dominic or Ryan, I am one of those people that watch ABDC off season to SYTYCD, but you have to see is that these guys were basically doing dancing meant for 1 or 2 so it could emphasize the talent of the dancer. With ABDC it is a totally different situation. These stunts that they perform are meant to emphasize the group as a whole. Some might come to the assume that the pairings in SYTYCD are the same situation, but the pairings do get mixed up. If one partner is not up to the others standards we see that they take responsibility and are kicked out of the competition, while the superior dancer (in theory) moves on with another contestant. With ABDC one member makes a big enough mistake the whole group suffers.

This is by no means without precedent. A couple of teams from the first season had stints on other dancing/reality shows. For starters, I do recall a masked group of dancers going by the name of Jabbawockeez on America's got Talent, and also E Knock and Jermaine of Status Quo from season 1 both made it to Hollywood on So You Think You Can Dance. This by no means is an unfair advantage. Yes, everyone who was a fan of the show knows who Hok is, but its not all about one dancer now. ABDC is all about the group, and if the group is out of sync, the group does not get as much votes. Personally, Quest are also my favorites, but I think the big sleepers in this whole thing are Strikers All Stars. Quest and Beat Freaks can rip it with their flashy moves, Ringmasters are incredibly crazy and flexible and everyone knows Team Millenia has skills from last year (hows that for an unfair advantage?), but those guys are one of the tightest groups I've ever seen. Stepping mixed with hip hop is an extremely entertaining and high paced dance form, and I think they could go all the way.

It called ABDC...what ever you can do bring it..or else we would be stuck with all those damn cheerleaders...

7. TheMan -
you bring it..it's already brougth..

What yall don't know is that out of all the crews on ABDC, the Beat Phreaks are all industry dancers. Rino dances for Gwen as the main Harajuku Girl.

9. mattheww -
I don't think it gives them an unfair advantage, because all of the crews have someone like Dynamic Edition has Brandon who was also on SYTYCD.

Yes, Rino is a Harajuku Girl for Gwen Stefani Plus They have the support of both winners of the last two seasons so if anyone has an unfair advantage it's definitely them... With the power of Super Cr3w and the Jabberwockees they are an unstoppable force!

Maryss from Paris of Beatfreaks danced with JT, well all members of Beatfreaks danced with A-list popstars. The only advantage of Quest is that they are charming and adorable. Viewers tend to root for the underdog and hates already familiar faces but in the case of Quest Crew, people are actually rooting for them. It's funny coz the judges are trying to downplay that STYCD advantage of the team by saying the girls are whipping up their asses by coming up on top but no one seems to buy that.
Wanna see the Beatfreaks and Quest battle it out in the finals.

Quest killed it tonight. End of story.

Does anyone remember the Strikers winning on Showtime at the Apollo about 4 or 5 times?? I expect most of these crews to have some sort of professional or competitive past. After all, they didn't become dancers when ABDC came around; they were already pros. In regards to the finale, I was behind Beat Freaks wholeheartedly until Quest Crew kicked their asses yesterday. I think QC has it, hands down!

I'm ready for an ABDC ALL-Stars show! It's time!!

13. V -
1st all of Beat Freaks are PROFESSIONAL dancers. They danced for Britney Spears (which they do mention quite often), Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani and so on, so they shouldn't of auditioned in the first part since they were already dancing for the big stage.

I was a fan of both Quest Crew and Beat freaks but damn if Quest Crew didn't just win yesterday! Beat Freaks for some reason panicked and gave a horrible performance! Go Quest Crew!!!!

This post is unnecessary!
Go do something better with your life!

I heard one of the girls from Beat Freaks choreographed professionally for like Janet. If that is true, I would argue that they actually have the unfair advantage. GO QUEST!!!

K.I.S.S.

Quest danced to win, BFs danced not to lose.

17. charisse -
Yes..i think this post is unnecessary..because all the dancers on the show have somewhat a professional background.. i think the purpose of this show is to give dancers more exposure and a chance to be given more respect, appreciation and money like the actors and athletes..

I don't think it should matter. Being on the show is like auditioning for a job. If I go for a job interview, is someone going to say it's not fair because I'm more experienced and qualified? Being on the show is like auditioning for a job and if you are skilled and experienced, so what? It's not against the rules. I think people are just haters and that's why they're whining about it being unfair. Quest Crew is definately the best group this season and deserve to win. Unfortunately I know that certain people will only vote because they want an all girl group to win or they think it's "unfair" but really they're just being haters. The best group shouuld win and that's Quest Crew.

This is bad journalism, blogism or whatever you may call it. Lyndsey Parker, you got to do some research before you write about something that doesn't make any sense or as other users say unnecessary. Pointless post, i totally agree. Anyways, that was a great show last week, and Quest Crew just laid it all on the floor while Beat Freaks just went old-school and kinda shot themselves in the foot by being too cautious. Quest Crew just ripped it up and deserves to win.

I dont think its unfair at all!

And i love dom aka D-trix, he is sooo adorable!(:
