Introducing...Adam Glambert!

Posted Thu Feb 19, 2009 2:04pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

A quick YouTube search for "Adam Lambert" generates hundreds of results, including footage of him in a production of Wicked; a video of him sporting peroxided Billy Idol hair and a Scissor Sisters/Darkness-worthy magenta unitard at an Art4Life benefit concert; and cameraphone clips of him wistfully warbling the existential anthem "Dust In The Wind" at a Hollywood cabaret.

There are also dozen of salivating fan video tributes, which I think bodes well for him when he sings on American Idol next week.

But of all the Adam Lambert videos out there on the Interweb, I most dig this one of him glamming it up Hedwig The Angry Inch-style, complete with Adam Ant warpaint, vacuum-sealed pleather pants, a man-corset, a flock of firedancers, and an octave-shattering rock 'n' roll screech that indicates he is one of the few Idol contestants this season fully capable of taking on a kiss-of-death Queen or Heart song:

Yes, I know I criticize some Idol contestants for being too over-the-top (Tatiana, cough), but this is one type of OTT I wholeheartedly appreciate.

I just wish Adam wasn't toning down his flamboyance so drastically on the show, but I suppose that's what he needs to do in order to not instantly alienate all of middle America. This is American Idol, not RuPaul's Drag Race, after all, and we all remember how an overly sassy performance of "Tainted Love" was Danny Noriega's downfall last season...

But MAN, how rad would it be if Adam wore this outfit when he performed next week?

LP, when will you ever understand that there are good types of flamboyance (i.e. Freddy Mercury), and BAD types (i.e. Danny Noriega). Damn... that's an insult to put their two names together! Sorry Freddy! I was trying to make a point.

2. Lyndsey Parker -
I wasn't comparinf Noriega to Freddie, but there's a definite similar huge vocal range between Freddie and Adam. Come on, you must admit he kills it on this song!

3. __A_YAHOO_USER__ -
Ah, well Lyndsey, admittedly this guy has vocal chops. But not quite the range of Freddie live. Man, Freddie could whoop this guy in a singing contest.

Well, he does have talent, but its a huge turn-off for him to be in American Idol...I mean...to me, its too much of a fad. but w/e

the last thing I will say about this is that he should change his name. Adam just sounds a bit lame, know what I mean?

4. Lyndsey Parker -
There will never be another Freddie, but at least this guy will be able to sing a Queen song without ruining it.

Lyndsey- I love him! I am gonna vote a lot. For Adam. Yes, I love the Danny Noriegas and the Adams too!

6. Uki -
Well, yeah Adam can sing, probably hit the notes and all the voice technicality thingy with Queen's songs. But..........would he be able to perform like Freddie? Adam looked too sweet and nice and not as bold and brave on stage like Freddie. Hmmm......I wonder if Adam should learn a thing or two from some of the more bold and braver contestant on stage (Normund, anyone?)

7. Una -
Lyndsey, could you tell the editors that they need to put your blog in a more prominent place on the Yahoo Music page, and PLEASE don't make me search all the way down below the fold to find you!!! I look forward to your comments after every AI show each week. Please push it out there !!!

8. ScottC -
Thanks for the video Lyndsey! THAT was the most OTT production I've seen since the Satan's Alley production number at end of John Travolta's film 'Staying Alive'!

9. Witawat -
I think that he was very bold. I hope that he doesn't tone down too much. I think people will either love hm or hate him. By the way, I think that he should consider doing Mika's songs. I think I would suites him well.

H*O*T*

11. Snowflakes456 -
LOVE HIM! Adam is going to win. I will vote lots n lots.

Personally, I like Adam as a vocalist...but if he over does his song on Idol, it seriously could be detrimental!!

13. Uki -
Now that I look again at the video, I was kinda hoping Adam would develop a nice 6 pack abs......

14. Sam D -
Certainly my fav this year and boy, can he sing. The Cher song he sang on Hollywood week was just 'out of this world'.

He has the charisma, stage presence, and most of all, grabs your attention the moment he comes on screen.

He is David Cook of 2009 and Gokey is Taylor Hicks of 'Better best forgotten'. (sorry Lynd)

He is set for a long shelf life for sure. Mark these words people;-)

D33Purple just confuses me. What does his name matter? What's so lame about the name "Adam" and what does it have to do with his appeal? And, just how high do you think Freddie Mercury can sing? I think they're comparable. Freddy wasn't the be-all end-all of singers you know, and his style wasn't patented. He was great for sure, but so is Adam and this world needs a little bit of the ol' Freddie in it now that he's gone. Adam ROCKS!!!

@Uki, Adam has stage presence flying out of him. I mean, he's a performer by profession. I've also seen pre-idol videos of him on YouTube performing his own song, and he is a great dancer. Though, I imagine he would overwhelm a lot of middle aged women if he let that much flamboyance slip into his performance.

17. camashe -
I would put money up for him to make an album if he doesn't win

18. Gayla -
After last night he became a favorite of mine I had tears rolling down my cheeks and I am old school Rock and Roll.

I can't get enough of Adam Lambert. He is fresh to American Idol which is totally boring without him. I just wait for him to come on. I thought he toned it down too much last night but whatever he does is okay with me because we know what he really can do. But please ADAM, DON't TONE DOWN. I just love his stage presence. He totally rocks and I would put him on my radio show anytime anyday.

20. Hottie -
I hear a lot of people saying Adam should or shouldn't TONE down. If you have seen this, Adam said in an interview on AI that he has to tone it down because it's not theater. On AI, it's a different setting with the camera's being so up close and in your face. In the theater you have to be more flamboyant and loud to reach your audience. He said it's a difficult balance. Anyway, LOVE you Adam! I'll be texting my little fingers off for you! :)
