America Gets It Wrong: Kris Allen Wins 'Idol'

Posted Wed May 20, 2009 7:05pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Hello, readers...I can't believe I'm actually typing these words--in capslock format, yet--but here goes...

KRIS ALLEN IS THE NEW AMERICAN IDOL.

Now, my regular readers know I am extremely crushed--CRUSHED!--by this news. I might have been rooting for Bo Bice in season 4 and Blake Lewis in season 6, but their respective defeats were much easier for me to take (and much more expected) than this shocking setback.

Adam Lambert was my unabashed early favorite the instant I saw a viral video of him glamming and hamming it up in a Hollywood rock band wearing vaccum-packed pleather pants and some sort of bizarre man-corset. Back then, I jadedly assumed he wouldn't even make the top 13, because his theatrical antics--along with those much-discussed Interweb JPEGs of him floating around--would likely alienate much of America. But soon it seemed like none of that "scandalous" stuff mattered much to the viewing public, and Adam subsequently kept getting voted through based on his TALENT.

I started to believe that there was a subtle cultural shift going on in this country. I mean, if a black, Democratic president could be elected in 2008, then surely a black-nail-polished, androgynous Idol could win in 2009, right? Yes he could!

Well, that did not happen. In perhaps the biggest upset in AmIdol history, the competition's darkest dark horse, the little contestant that could, the tortoise to Adam's hare--Kris Allen--took home the Idol title tonight.

But you know, maybe it wasn't such an "upset" after all. Maybe it was foolish of me to think that a copiously mascara'd, leather-sheathed, rock-operatic free spirit from Southern California could actually beat out a clean-cut, happily married church worship leader from Arkansas who kind of looks like Joey from Friends.

Then again...maybe Adam's defeat had NOTHING to do with any sort of liberal/conservative, guyliner/guy-next-door cultural divide after all. Maybe it was just all the over-the-top weekly hype surrounding Adam that created an unfortunate but inevitable backlash--especially the judges' blatant favoritism, which even I will admit was a bit much and would have bothered me a lot if I hadn't so wholeheartedly agreed with the judges or personally found Adam so uniquely deserving of such fawning. But perhaps Lambertmania turned off a lot of other voters, or made voters assume that Adam didn't "need" this victory as much as underdog Kris did.

Whatever the reason, I don't want Allen fans to think I have anything against Kris. I believe Kris is talented and authentic, and I'm glad he made it to the finale instead of any number of other contestants (like Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Anoop Desai--but NOT Allison Iraheta, whom I adored). I think Kris was a worthy opponent for Adam. I just don't think he deserved to WIN.

I honestly think America (or, more specifically, America's Danny Gokey fans, who possibly defected to Kris's side after Gokey left and effectively bridged that million-vote gap between Adam and Kris) got it very wrong here.

I will just take solace in the fact that a) Adam Lambert will get a record deal anyway; b) not winning may allow Adam to have more creative control over his debut album, and thus he'll release more genuinely freak-flag-flying material; c) Adam won't have to release that insipid "No Boundaries" as his first single; and d) Adam will probably outsell Kris in the long run.

Feel free to post your comments about the season 8 winner now, and let me know if you think Adam was robbed or if the right singer prevailed tonight.

I'll never get over this. I am in shock. How could Adam not win?? If he isn't an American Idol, who is?? Adam was by far the best all season long. Come on America!!! Where were the Glamberts last night???????????????????????????

24. sloan keatering -
Overrated what an idiot you are! Adam wil sell way more records than Kris. And Kris even said it himself that Adam desereved it and he should of won. lol its a joke

wow
great show...I liked the top four as they were all extremely talented...I was hoping for an Allison/Adam finish...but Kris is also very talented....so congrats Kris....and Adam need not fear...they will both be amazing and have great success..and Little Miss Alison will end up with more Albums selling then both of the guys....this for me was one the best year sense Jordin won..by the way Battlefield Jordin's new single has topped 500,000 downloads...you go Jordin :)

I think it's absolutely hilarious that you blame the Gokey fans for Adam not winning.... I voted for Danny a couple hundred times every week while he was in, but I did not vote last night for either Adam or Kris. I saw no point... Look on the bright side, like you said yourself Adam will have more control over song choice/creativity now than if he would have won. It'll probably work out better for him this way. Congrats Kris, as for myself I'm waiting for Danny's first cd...

There is no cultural shift. People are so narrow minded. It isn't just East and West voting. It is all the psychos in the middle that vote for clean cut. Don't believe all that clean cut crap. Adam is the best and we all know it.

Adam is the only idol that was not over-rated! I've been watching AI since day one and he's the only one I ever bothered to press re-dial for. He was robbed!

Kris is humble enough to be suprised by winning since everyone on the show and with visible power, such as this blog was against him. Hence his shock, and comment over Adam not winning. He does not believe for a second he does not deserve it, he just has class. Unlike Adam who actually picked sides when he was asked who he should stand with earlier in the show. Again you all like to spin things into Adam's favor. Sad that you all can't be happy that a regular citizen had this opportunity and made his dream come true. A lot of you are truly sour individuals.

I am ECSTATIC that Kris won!!! It was a complete shocker that he won but a very pleasant one. Adam is one talented singer, no question about that. But the Judges blatantly fawning over Adam was just sickening. I'm glad America voted fro Kris. America definitely made the right decision on this one!

NOOOOOOO!!!!
I was on the Internet searching for spoilers for the last hour or two!!! AND THIS IS THE NEWS I GET!!!
Adam Lambert is by far the most talented singer ever on AI. Kris is okay but compared to Adam, Adam is like wayyy better. Adam was SO SPECIAL!!! You will like never get someone like that. HE DESERVES THAT TITLE!!!! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Sorry for that rant but NOOOOO! I am terribly dissappointed!!! What has America done?????
Kris is just average compared to Adam. America must not know which one has the MOST TALENT(cough Adam cough)=(

I was hyperventilating when I read the news. why, why, why???

America is still homophobic....Adam was too out there, but I believe he will outshine Kris in the end just as Clay did with Ruebin. Maybe, at least Adam will be able to have my control over his album and he wont have to have that No Bounderies crap as his first single.
Also, Adam stole the show with Kiss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Disappointment to a noble soul is what cold water is to burning metal; it strengthens, tempers, intensifies, but never destroys it. you go adam!!!!!

ARE THEY KIDDING?? KRIS ALLEN BESTED ADAM LAMBERT?? HELLOOOOOOOO? WAKE UP AMERICA! Well at least Adam won't have to sing that crap song by Kara! But really, this was no competition. I will give Kris his due but he certainly was not the better singer this year.

36. Nelson T -
So disappointed with America-once again!!! But hell, the voted a kick as Pres! so they must be on the right track!

37. Yahoo! Music User -
Good decision, America! Kris is really talented and he deserved 2 win!

38. Yahoo! Music User -
Oh well, I hope Adam will be FAR more successful than any other Idol. Simon of course would give him a record deal, right?

39. Ralphybaby31 -
Adam Lambert at least will be allowed to do his own thing on his own album...and I for one being a club d.j. can't wait....America did get it wrong but who cares Adam will be by far a brighter star in the long run.

40. Duncan -
I have to say as a singer - song writer I can sing at Kris or Danny level but the thing I can not do with all the vocal training in the world is sing like Adam. Their are very few people born with that range and very few people can do what he can do.. That said I wouldn't give a penny to sing like Kris or Danny, but I would empty my bank account to have a voice like Adam's...

Enough said...
