America Gets It Wrong: Kris Allen Wins 'Idol'

Posted Wed May 20, 2009 7:05pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Hello, readers...I can't believe I'm actually typing these words--in capslock format, yet--but here goes...

KRIS ALLEN IS THE NEW AMERICAN IDOL.

Now, my regular readers know I am extremely crushed--CRUSHED!--by this news. I might have been rooting for Bo Bice in season 4 and Blake Lewis in season 6, but their respective defeats were much easier for me to take (and much more expected) than this shocking setback.

Adam Lambert was my unabashed early favorite the instant I saw a viral video of him glamming and hamming it up in a Hollywood rock band wearing vaccum-packed pleather pants and some sort of bizarre man-corset. Back then, I jadedly assumed he wouldn't even make the top 13, because his theatrical antics--along with those much-discussed Interweb JPEGs of him floating around--would likely alienate much of America. But soon it seemed like none of that "scandalous" stuff mattered much to the viewing public, and Adam subsequently kept getting voted through based on his TALENT.

I started to believe that there was a subtle cultural shift going on in this country. I mean, if a black, Democratic president could be elected in 2008, then surely a black-nail-polished, androgynous Idol could win in 2009, right? Yes he could!

Well, that did not happen. In perhaps the biggest upset in AmIdol history, the competition's darkest dark horse, the little contestant that could, the tortoise to Adam's hare--Kris Allen--took home the Idol title tonight.

But you know, maybe it wasn't such an "upset" after all. Maybe it was foolish of me to think that a copiously mascara'd, leather-sheathed, rock-operatic free spirit from Southern California could actually beat out a clean-cut, happily married church worship leader from Arkansas who kind of looks like Joey from Friends.

Then again...maybe Adam's defeat had NOTHING to do with any sort of liberal/conservative, guyliner/guy-next-door cultural divide after all. Maybe it was just all the over-the-top weekly hype surrounding Adam that created an unfortunate but inevitable backlash--especially the judges' blatant favoritism, which even I will admit was a bit much and would have bothered me a lot if I hadn't so wholeheartedly agreed with the judges or personally found Adam so uniquely deserving of such fawning. But perhaps Lambertmania turned off a lot of other voters, or made voters assume that Adam didn't "need" this victory as much as underdog Kris did.

Whatever the reason, I don't want Allen fans to think I have anything against Kris. I believe Kris is talented and authentic, and I'm glad he made it to the finale instead of any number of other contestants (like Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Anoop Desai--but NOT Allison Iraheta, whom I adored). I think Kris was a worthy opponent for Adam. I just don't think he deserved to WIN.

I honestly think America (or, more specifically, America's Danny Gokey fans, who possibly defected to Kris's side after Gokey left and effectively bridged that million-vote gap between Adam and Kris) got it very wrong here.

I will just take solace in the fact that a) Adam Lambert will get a record deal anyway; b) not winning may allow Adam to have more creative control over his debut album, and thus he'll release more genuinely freak-flag-flying material; c) Adam won't have to release that insipid "No Boundaries" as his first single; and d) Adam will probably outsell Kris in the long run.

Feel free to post your comments about the season 8 winner now, and let me know if you think Adam was robbed or if the right singer prevailed tonight.

i love the both of them but i must say... ADAM should have won!!!! I am so disappointed with AI. I don't think I would be watching the next season. But the good thing is at least Adam would have more freedom to be creative with his album:D

It doesn't matter if Adam wins or not.. I'll still go to a Adam Lambert Concert. Although I don't see myself rocking it a a Kris Allen concert but will still listen to his songs if they're being played on a random radio show..

i really followed american idol closely this year and it was because of adam lambert......say what you will but slash himself said it and he should know, the guy has some pipes. can't wait for him to record his first album with the likes of aerosmith, U2, slash and all the rock greats. and maybe even a tony. no boundaries adam!!! regardless of what the rest of america thinks, ADAM ROCKS

Adam Clearly won it must be a rigged vote no one in the crowd even cheered for Kris before he won. Who cares he wont sell any records anyways.

Adam will have the more successful career, but Kris predictably won because he was able to pick up the majority of Danny's voters. Too bad he has to record Kara's song now.

I was afraid of this result. I can't believe that American's are so stupid that his "controversial" life style came into consideration, but I'm sure that was a big part of it.

But, as others have said, Adam will do better and will have more artistic control over his first # 1 album.

Kris needed to win Idol in order to get anywhere. Adam doesn't. Kris will be up there with Rueben and Taylor. Adam will be as big or bigger than Kelly and Carrie. GO ADAM. Can't wait to see you in Vancouver.

I think that Adam should have won but glad that he didn't for his own good. He will still get a record deal and have more control of his music. I will be one of the first to buy his music. Look at Hedley...they did so much better without idol instead of having someone control their music. The same goes for Daughtrey, look at him now.

Way to go Kris you are a good singer, but in my opion not as good as Adam. May you have a long career ahead of you.

The only thing Kris got right was when he admitted Adam should have won. Kris had a sheepish grin and seemed melancholy b/c he was man to admit he did not win based on talent.

does it really matter who the "idol champion" is anymore? i mean, last year archie and cook both got recording deals with the 19 management. i think the same will happen this year as well. kris will get a recording deal and so will adam.
it really doesn't matter who wins the coveted "idol champion" spot...the recording contract isn't solely for the "winner"...its not exclusive anymore...the top two are getting the record deals...and not just the winner. kinda takes credibility away from the show a bit.
i am very happy kris won..i liked adam but like lindsy mentioned, i got tired of ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE forcing adam in my face and down my throat. and also, i don't think adam needs american idol to become successful. he will do much better on his own.
i think kris will do well also. he's creative and artistic..i think he is more of a total package...just my opinion.
YAY FOR KRIS ALLEN!!!

America the land of the free?More like land of God fearing, mindless, homophobic trailer trash.Adam you need to get out of that screwed up country and QUICK!Before some good ol' christian folk string you up.Move to Europe,Canada, anywhere but the U.S.Sorry Adam

I am sad that Adam didn't win! In everyone's heart he is the winner, no matter what the votes said!!!

America got it RIGHT! Way to go Kris.......Its wonderful to have someone like Kris to rep Arkansas. Goes to show that Good always wins in the end......love you Kris

77. christie b -
Come on, that's not fair. America can't "get it wrong", because in the end, it's America's choice. America clearly prefers someone who doesn't need to go off on stroke-like shrieks in order to complete *every* song.

The first time I heard Glambert sing one of his screaming songs I said "Wow, he's so unique". The 15th time, that wasn't my reaction. He is a very good singer, but (just my opinion) a bit of a one-trick-pony. At least Kris has some versatility.

78. MARY JANE -
First there was "Elvis"!!! Then there was "KISS"!!! Next there was "Queen"!!! Now there is "Adam"!!! May I remind you that NO ONE, I mean, NO ONE sings with KISS (as no one should) EXCEPT FOR ADAM!!! Gene Simmons and KISS would ONLY SING WITH THE BEST!!! That is Adam!!! Adam IS TODAY what ELVIS was in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. A true Icon and Idol!!! Can't wait to hear what he has coming up!!! Can't wait to see him in person!!! Kris is good but he is no Adam!! He is no Icon and definitely no American Idol!!! I do wish him well but I am anxiously awaiting more from Adam!!!

79. Yahoo! Music User -
Adam will be selling tens time more records than Kris. Kris votes included votes for Danny, Matt, Anoop, Michael, etc After Danny's fans will be buying Danny's records, Matt's fans - Matt's... And 50 million voters will be buying Adam's albums.
Go Adam!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are the best!!!!!!!!!! We love you!!!!!!!!!!!! See you August 14 in Canada!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
