America Gets It Wrong: Kris Allen Wins 'Idol'

Posted Wed May 20, 2009 7:05pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Hello, readers...I can't believe I'm actually typing these words--in capslock format, yet--but here goes...

KRIS ALLEN IS THE NEW AMERICAN IDOL.

Now, my regular readers know I am extremely crushed--CRUSHED!--by this news. I might have been rooting for Bo Bice in season 4 and Blake Lewis in season 6, but their respective defeats were much easier for me to take (and much more expected) than this shocking setback.

Adam Lambert was my unabashed early favorite the instant I saw a viral video of him glamming and hamming it up in a Hollywood rock band wearing vaccum-packed pleather pants and some sort of bizarre man-corset. Back then, I jadedly assumed he wouldn't even make the top 13, because his theatrical antics--along with those much-discussed Interweb JPEGs of him floating around--would likely alienate much of America. But soon it seemed like none of that "scandalous" stuff mattered much to the viewing public, and Adam subsequently kept getting voted through based on his TALENT.

I started to believe that there was a subtle cultural shift going on in this country. I mean, if a black, Democratic president could be elected in 2008, then surely a black-nail-polished, androgynous Idol could win in 2009, right? Yes he could!

Well, that did not happen. In perhaps the biggest upset in AmIdol history, the competition's darkest dark horse, the little contestant that could, the tortoise to Adam's hare--Kris Allen--took home the Idol title tonight.

But you know, maybe it wasn't such an "upset" after all. Maybe it was foolish of me to think that a copiously mascara'd, leather-sheathed, rock-operatic free spirit from Southern California could actually beat out a clean-cut, happily married church worship leader from Arkansas who kind of looks like Joey from Friends.

Then again...maybe Adam's defeat had NOTHING to do with any sort of liberal/conservative, guyliner/guy-next-door cultural divide after all. Maybe it was just all the over-the-top weekly hype surrounding Adam that created an unfortunate but inevitable backlash--especially the judges' blatant favoritism, which even I will admit was a bit much and would have bothered me a lot if I hadn't so wholeheartedly agreed with the judges or personally found Adam so uniquely deserving of such fawning. But perhaps Lambertmania turned off a lot of other voters, or made voters assume that Adam didn't "need" this victory as much as underdog Kris did.

Whatever the reason, I don't want Allen fans to think I have anything against Kris. I believe Kris is talented and authentic, and I'm glad he made it to the finale instead of any number of other contestants (like Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Anoop Desai--but NOT Allison Iraheta, whom I adored). I think Kris was a worthy opponent for Adam. I just don't think he deserved to WIN.

I honestly think America (or, more specifically, America's Danny Gokey fans, who possibly defected to Kris's side after Gokey left and effectively bridged that million-vote gap between Adam and Kris) got it very wrong here.

I will just take solace in the fact that a) Adam Lambert will get a record deal anyway; b) not winning may allow Adam to have more creative control over his debut album, and thus he'll release more genuinely freak-flag-flying material; c) Adam won't have to release that insipid "No Boundaries" as his first single; and d) Adam will probably outsell Kris in the long run.

Feel free to post your comments about the season 8 winner now, and let me know if you think Adam was robbed or if the right singer prevailed tonight.

I am disappointed with the result... Adam should win. Kris is good but Adam is just amazing, i have never seen some one with so much talent as Adam...! Adam is big as a person and artist .....!

Adam showed his amazing creativity and talent week after week. Chris & Gokey shame on you for judging him! Adam not only deserved to win he has been the best ever on the Idol stage. Simon did the right thing and stayed in his seat when the winner was declared. Congrats Adam, you are not the winner but you will get a recording contract handed to you with your talent... can't wait!

Kris was so lost tonight. God, he couldn't take his eyes off Keith Urban b/c he'd lose his place in the duet song. And the Queen duet number, oh, Kris hang it up. You could see Brian May giving Adam credit for being incredible.

You have a good future Adam...very talented.

It's true what they say, American's really don't know anything about good music. Surely Adam should have won, this is the reason why I didn't sit through 2 hours of crap to only get disappointed.

2 disappoints in one week is all I can take. First Dancing With The Stars and now this.

Maybe, us Canadians should be doing the voting. At least we would get it right!

Wow! I just listened to him singing a song in Brigadoon on youtube...........When he sings classically he is even more amazing! It would have been nice to hear him sing that way too on AI, he would have blown everybody out of the water even more.

I knew there was something wrong the minute Gokey was eliminated...well,it seems i was right when Kris won...of course, Kris is talented as is Danny but hello???? Adam really deserves to win... his talent is so obvious....and his mass appeal is blatantly shown with the screams from the crowd ...and yes, we all know by the fact that Simon didn't stand when the winner was announced that SOMETHING IS WRONG!!!

88. David -
Adam, you deserved to get the title! Kris was great but I think it will really crash his confidence even more.....everyone is saying what he always believed: that he is not that good. I feel bad for him. I don't think he wanted to win.,,That is my wife and her thoughts...I say, hey Kris, Good for you...,,,you are a winner!

Well ... if I was a betting person, I would've made some money. I feel the most talented (Kris does have talent) person did not win. I think Adam was robbed by the 'righteous' votes of the American people. It's a singing contest, not a religious or moral platform, the same thing that was portrayed at the Miss USA. Even Kris himself said Adam should've won, and I also noticed Simon was not sitting or applauding. But I believe with this exposure Adam will have a marketable career that will last for years... Kris on the other hand will do his debut album and fad away .. just like Ruben, Taylor and the list goes on ...

Ah ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-hah-aaaaaaaa!!!! HA ha hahah ahahaahahahahaa.....................

America did get it right. Kris totally deserved to win. Adam is already a great singer, and known to Broadway. Why is everyone so nasty to poor Kris? Adam seems to be ok with it. Maybe if adam would change his look, he may have won!!!!

I was prepared to lose this time. It is not about the best performer but the worser the better. America indeed vote for the worst. Adam the other night and tonight outperformed even the professionals but he lost anyway by America. Nothing to to lose sleep about. Good luck Adam.

Kris is the perfect AI- easy on the eyes and mediocre! He seems nice enough... not much range or variety but sings nice songs about "luv and kissin" and whatnot. He did a great job tonight... not totally memorable but "nice".
Adam, thankfully, does not need to sing that lousy song about hurricanes and mountains. He rocks and will continue to do so. So haters can feel good that "screaming" didn't win... nor did, more to their point, eyeliner and nail polish. Adam had a GREAT run each week and will speak to his fans.
It was a good AI year... the year that uber talent (vocal control and range with an edgy performance vibe) got to the last round despite being gay in a largely conservative country!
Both Kris and Adam did a great job...

Here is the deal. American Got It Right, Kris did win.

I voted for Kris. But think about it. They are both just as talented in different ways. This is probably BEST for Adam, I agree with the writer, think about this, hell Gene Simmons is already probably asking Adam to tour with them.

America You Got It Right On.

95. mittelr -
Both great artists and both will be successful. Congratulations Chris

96. BillW -
Hey sADAMitems (I believe that's what his fans are calling themselves) - YOU LOSE!!!!!!! HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Freaking hillarious!!!!!

97. PARIMALA -
Adam Lambert is going to sell more records, more popular and he is undoubtedly a gifted performer. I am a bit dissapointed but I am sure he will prevail as an artist. As for Kris, enjoy this moment bcoz after this, in reality Adam rocks in record sales and popularity!!

98. Caitlin -
I can actually hear Chris on the most popular radio stations. Adam- on the rock station killing is vocal cords with that scream. Not that Adam isn't good, I just think he needs to soften it up a bit to get even more public support.

GO CHRIS!

99. BillW -
And here's more salt for your wounds: Gokey would've beat him too!!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!

What is wrong with you Americans??? Adam has amazing talent.. Kris is just another blah singer

Pinetop Perkins' 80-year career still going

AP
Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:03am PST

AP - Noisy crowds in smoky bars don't bother 96-year-old bluesman Pinetop Perkins. It's all part of his job. Most nights, after he snuffs out his menthol cigarette, Perkins slides onto the piano bench in some club and … More »
