America Gets It Wrong: Kris Allen Wins 'Idol'

Posted Wed May 20, 2009 7:05pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Hello, readers...I can't believe I'm actually typing these words--in capslock format, yet--but here goes...

KRIS ALLEN IS THE NEW AMERICAN IDOL.

Now, my regular readers know I am extremely crushed--CRUSHED!--by this news. I might have been rooting for Bo Bice in season 4 and Blake Lewis in season 6, but their respective defeats were much easier for me to take (and much more expected) than this shocking setback.

Adam Lambert was my unabashed early favorite the instant I saw a viral video of him glamming and hamming it up in a Hollywood rock band wearing vaccum-packed pleather pants and some sort of bizarre man-corset. Back then, I jadedly assumed he wouldn't even make the top 13, because his theatrical antics--along with those much-discussed Interweb JPEGs of him floating around--would likely alienate much of America. But soon it seemed like none of that "scandalous" stuff mattered much to the viewing public, and Adam subsequently kept getting voted through based on his TALENT.

I started to believe that there was a subtle cultural shift going on in this country. I mean, if a black, Democratic president could be elected in 2008, then surely a black-nail-polished, androgynous Idol could win in 2009, right? Yes he could!

Well, that did not happen. In perhaps the biggest upset in AmIdol history, the competition's darkest dark horse, the little contestant that could, the tortoise to Adam's hare--Kris Allen--took home the Idol title tonight.

But you know, maybe it wasn't such an "upset" after all. Maybe it was foolish of me to think that a copiously mascara'd, leather-sheathed, rock-operatic free spirit from Southern California could actually beat out a clean-cut, happily married church worship leader from Arkansas who kind of looks like Joey from Friends.

Then again...maybe Adam's defeat had NOTHING to do with any sort of liberal/conservative, guyliner/guy-next-door cultural divide after all. Maybe it was just all the over-the-top weekly hype surrounding Adam that created an unfortunate but inevitable backlash--especially the judges' blatant favoritism, which even I will admit was a bit much and would have bothered me a lot if I hadn't so wholeheartedly agreed with the judges or personally found Adam so uniquely deserving of such fawning. But perhaps Lambertmania turned off a lot of other voters, or made voters assume that Adam didn't "need" this victory as much as underdog Kris did.

Whatever the reason, I don't want Allen fans to think I have anything against Kris. I believe Kris is talented and authentic, and I'm glad he made it to the finale instead of any number of other contestants (like Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Anoop Desai--but NOT Allison Iraheta, whom I adored). I think Kris was a worthy opponent for Adam. I just don't think he deserved to WIN.

I honestly think America (or, more specifically, America's Danny Gokey fans, who possibly defected to Kris's side after Gokey left and effectively bridged that million-vote gap between Adam and Kris) got it very wrong here.

I will just take solace in the fact that a) Adam Lambert will get a record deal anyway; b) not winning may allow Adam to have more creative control over his debut album, and thus he'll release more genuinely freak-flag-flying material; c) Adam won't have to release that insipid "No Boundaries" as his first single; and d) Adam will probably outsell Kris in the long run.

Feel free to post your comments about the season 8 winner now, and let me know if you think Adam was robbed or if the right singer prevailed tonight.

unbelievable!! anyone with an ear for music, hell even one without an ear for music could see that Adam was so far ahead of the rest. i don't think it will really matter in the long run. Adam will go far, Kris i fear might make a record or two but I don't think he stands out or has any individual style that will take him far. Kris is a nice kid with a mediocre voice. Adam is a talen to be reckoned with.

I'm sorry. But America DID get it wrong. Just look at the performances 2nite. Kris cannot and does not match up to Adam vocally. Even my nubby wanted Kris to stop singing with Queen so Adam could sing. I know that I will no longer watch AI and had a hunch something like this would happen because of the voting issues. Isn't it interesting that they didn't mention how many votes separated the 2 like they always do?

It wasn't even CLOSE.........America got it right. BTW - Kris is well deserving and will have a longer, more sustained career than Glambert.

I am SO SO SO upset!!!

I don't know what to do with myself!

Its incredible how blind you Adam fans are. You cant just come to grips that there is a huge amount of people that simply enjoy the singing style Kris possess instead of Adam's. No you cant come to grips with that, instead you do what all lowlife's do. You claim Adam lost because he is gay, you claim Adam lost because Kris is a church goer...you are all pathetic. If you want to shed the blame, blame the people that were completely biased, perfect examples is the title of this blog. I for one enjoy that America did not blindly follow the stupid. Simon needs to stick to Britain Has Talent, and forget American Idol. The American Idol judges are completely unlikeable, biased, and moronic, and as a result make Simon look like a tard.

I think Kris deserved it just as much as Adam - good job Kris you should be proud of yourself - besides Adam screamed too much!

HELLOOOOOOO! I was trying to TAUNT Lyndsey!!! I DID like Adam's performances last night, but I couldn't resist the moment to taunt Lyndsey SO DANG HARD!!!

Kris won because Kris appealed to more people... period. It wasn't Gokey fans... I couldn't stand Gokey.. had to fast forward through him tonight. Most Americans are obviously not fans of the theater and to like Adam you needed to like the theatrical. His talent is undeniable. When he sang normal.. I liked him. When he screamed.. I didn't. You talk like there is something wrong with the fact that Kris is a happily married church worship leader (didn't know he was a church worship leader by the way). I'm telling you what... most of America seems to be messed up if they think there is something wrong with that. I could care less about Adam's lifestyle...that would be his choice and his business.. I just didn't like his music style and obviously the majority of the people voting didn't since he didn't win...GET OVER IT.

Really!!! There is one saying in this world...a reason for things that happen...plain to see why Kris won!!! He will have the chance to make a big name for himself , where Adam if your all honest didnt need the title of American Idol. He will be a a big star!!

They are both talented in their onw way...let's be happy for both. One is cool, has the talent to make it in the music industry, the other needed this win ( not to say he would not of made it big but winning the title does help him) God does work in mysterious ways doesnt he ? Something to think about!!!

We get two talented singer we we all enjoy, nothing wrong in that and yes I was sure Adam would of won, goes to show us, never judge a book by it's cover, congradualtion Kris and Adam ((hugs))

Don't, don't, don't ever believe this had anything to do with anything other than the music. What's so hard for all you Adam Lambert fans out there to understand that there is a large portion of America that doesn't like being shrieked at, on key or otherwise. Kris is just much more marketable to a larger audience, plain and simple.

Kris seems like a lovely guy, and is talented, but frankly is just not nearly in Adam's league in terms of voice, tone, range, stage presence. Adam is just utterly compelling and unique. What a shame that talent lost out to the image factor (tweens voting for the cute singer). I'm disappointed in America!

113. Yahoo! Music User -
Maybe...just maybe, next year, the judges won't fawn, slobber, and otherwise crown their favorite as the winner before America speaks. Adam is a talented guy and will do well regardless of the outcome....but I for one got tired of the endless, over-the-top gushing on the part of the judges. It seemed like America was getting the judges' choice rammed down their throats, and probably created a huge backlash.

114. Luis Fernando -
OH!!! Thank GOD! I won't have to listen to Adam screaming on the radio... He gave me headache several times during this season!... GOOD FOR YOU KRIS ALLEN!!! We have THE American Idol!!!!

115. BillW -
Hey sillyvilly2005 - SCREW YOU. I'm glad you're waaaaaay up north - freaking idiot.

116. BillW -
sillyvilly2005 - thou doth protest too much.....

117. EE Junior -
simon and the new little girl judge is the reason for adams elimination. these two have learnt a lesson that when u wanna force your choice down the throat at america they push back hard against it. ask hilary clinton and she will tell u better. shame on simon and diguarla or whats her name again?

118. Super Sassy -
I AM GOBSMACKED!!!! I'm shocked, appalled, horrified, AND completely unable to grasp this!!! Adam definitely got robbed. so sad so sad =(

119. cea -
I don't think Kris Allen will be able to take the pressure of all that is required from him form the AI machine.

The title of the blog, the use of the CAPS and the BOLD type just affirm the old adage. just because you are louder does not mean you are right. I think Adam is a very talented singer, probably the most talented in the competition this year. But the contest isn't about being the best singer, the contest is about being the best singer that people want to hear.

The fact that he endears himself to you and most of your readers (judging by the comments I read most of the season) means simply that you and your readers love him. It also means that the more reserved, less vocal majority liked Kris.

The end result will be meaningless in a year or two anyways. I disagree with you and truly believe Kris will have better, more long term success - but I'm not hating on Adam, I just don't think he has "widespread" appeal.

As someone who has been a fan of "rockers" since he left the womb 34 years ago, I can tell you I would likely never buy a Lambert album while I can see myself buying a Kris Allen album. And while my rock music collection is quite large, at this point he doesn't even register. I don't even think he really fit well with Kiss tonight. He soft vocals are superb, and his high notes, while annoying, are good. It's his up-tempo, middle ground that I find lacking.

Music Review: Kelly brings the sex, not the sexy

AP

AP - R. Kelly, "Untitled" (Jive Records) When it comes to R&B raunch, no one does it better than R. Kelly. The man has more songs about sex than there are ways of actually having it. From "Bump N' Gr… More »
