It's Not Kris Allen's Fault

Posted Tue May 26, 2009 12:47pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

I'm beginning to feel bad for Kris Allen. It's not his fault that America made a mistake.

Now, my regular readers know that as an avid Adam Lambert supporter since Hollywood Week, I am still reeling over Adam's defeat on American Idol last Wednesday. I truly feel Adam was the REAL Idol. Many other viewers and readers agree with me. And I have a feeling even Kris Allen agrees with me a little bit, since the first words out of his mouth, upon hearing the news from Ryan Seacrest that he'd won, were: "Adam deserves this."

But poor Kris, deserving or not, hasn't been able to fully savor his victory, and not just because he might be suffering from survivor's guilt. His win is the most tainted and bittersweet in Idol history--especially in light of new accusations of voter tampering.

For instance, the entire finale--which was supposed to be a celebration of the WINNING Idol--was instead The Adam Lambert Show, since the only real finale highlights people were chattering about around the watercooler the following morning (aside from Kara DioGuardi's Bikini Girl duet) were Adam's history-making performances with Kiss and Queen. (Yes, I know Kris sang with Queen as well, but "We Are The Champions" was completely inappropriate for his style and he was utterly upstaged, only taking on the lower, easier parts and then stepping back into the woodwork while Adam belted out all the big power-notes.)

And then, from the minute Kris entered the finale night press room about an hour after winning, the question on the lips of every reporter at the Nokia Theater was not "How does it feel to win?" but "Are you surprised you won?" or "Are you surprised Adam lost?" (I was in the press room and I can assure you, the reporters were much more excited when Adam showed up backstage to field press queries.)

And of course, the big news on every blog and in every newspaper last Thursday morning was not "KRIS ALLEN WINS!" but "ADAM LAMBERT LOSES!" Despite coming in second, Adam was still the bigger story.

Conspiracy theories abounded--about the "Christian vote," about Arkansas phone-banking, about the voting being rigged by 19 Entertainment because Adam didn't "need" to win as much as Kris did, about anti-Semitism and homophobia, and most recently about unethical AT&T involvement. The fact that more Americans might have preferred Kris's musical style, plain and simple, was rarely discussed.

And then everyone was crying out, "What will Adam do next?"--record with Queen, go on the road with Kiss, star in the next Spiderman movie?--while no one in the media seemed to care about Kris's next crucial career move. (Then again, Kris-friendly finale acts Jason Mraz and Keith Urban weren't exactly offering jobs to Kris, were they?)

I understand the lack of general media interest in Kris. He's just not as interesting. I mean, I'm a member of the media and I've never been all that interested in him. But then both versions of "No Boundaries" came out, and it seemed like the powers-that-be at Idol weren't all that interested in Kris, either.

Adam's recording was a lushly produced, speaker-rustling power-ballad that sounded like it was slaved over in the studio for several days. Kris's single comparatively sounded like it was recorded in a closet during a studio lackey's lunch break. Additionally, Adam's cover art featured a slickly styled picture and lots of cloud-flare Photoshop effects, while Kris's resembled a student project from a basic Quark Xpress 101 class, with just some Helvetica slapped across a Kris photo that looked like it'd been taken at a kiosk in a mall.

And on top of all that, the record label that reps both Kris and Adam sent out a press release declaring Adam "the real American Idol." Yes, I wholeheartedly agreed with this statement--I do deeply believe, down to my very core, that Adam was totally robbed--but still, I felt bad for Kris that he didn't even have the support of his own label.

Of course, it's hard to actively dislike Kris. As angry as I am that he won, I've never been angry at him, since he's been extremely, self-effacingly humble about his Idol win and it's clear that he has nothing but admiration and respect for his good friend Adam. If the conspiracy theories about the "Christian vote" are at all true, that stuff had nothing to do with Kris, and Kris himself would surely not approve of any sort of anti-Adam hate campaign. (Kris made that clear on CNN's Larry King Live show last Friday, telling guest host Ryan Seacrest: "I guess me and Adam were doing an interview before the show. [And I was asked] 'Kris, do you think you're going to get the Christian vote now that Danny's gone?' And that was rough, that was kind of upsetting, because the show's not about religion...we are there to do music and there to sing, and hopefully people vote on that.")

Obviously, many people, myself included, are unhappy that Kris won American Idol. But it's not really his fault that he won. He knew he wasn't the best singer (he said so, flat-out, at his audition), but he shrugged his shoulders, crossed his fingers, and tried his best. He's not the one who messed up. It's the voters (or maybe AT&T) who messed up.

I wonder if any of this bums Kris out. I wonder if he worries that he won't ever sell as many records or get as much press as Adam. I wonder if he feels like a fraud. And I wonder if Adam Lambert feels kind of bad, too.

I have read so much in the last few days about how awful it is that America voted for Kris Allen. Should I feel awful for voting for him? I liked Kris from the beginning. I find him interesting. I like his genre of music. Oh and I am not from Arkansas :)...but with Adam I sort of felt.. ehh He's cute and I think he seems like a nice enough guy but he does nothing for me. Can he hit a falsetto...ya and so can all of the performers I have seen in Broadway plays! Can he play the piano, can he play the guitar? Why does talent with a high pitched voice and theatrical performances mean you are automatically better then the other guy? I don't get it.
Why is there no competing with Adam? If Adam is all that and a bag of chips why hasn't he made it before now? I guess the same could be said about any of the Idol's....but this guy has been in the business for awhile. The thing I liked about Kris is he wasn't part of the "scene", he didn't have years in the business, he has never been on Broadway, he has never been a backup singer or even tried to make it with his own "band". I think if we should feel bad for anyone it is American Idol because they came out looking bad. Adam fans are mad that he lost and frankly I was sick of watching them fawn all over Adam all season....he got perks, big lights/fireworks, costumes and things I have never seen any contestant receive before. Again...not Adam's fault they loved him but in the long run I think it did him more of a disservice and I know it only annoyed me. So in the long run AI may have turned off more segments of the population then they could have even imagined. I know I am pretty much done with the show....

I think America made the right decision. Adam didn't need American Idol to become the way he is today; he came into the competition with training while Kris did not. Kris is the one who progressed and slowly made his way to the top, Adam was already at the top. So, in reality, Kris worked about ten times harder to get to his position and, for that, I have a lot of respect for the guy.

I like Adam too but he really didn't have to work as hard, he was already pretty much set for hollywood the day he auditioned.

Lyndsey--
I wasn't sure w/ your reference about Mraz and Urban not offering Kris any jobs meant that Kiss and/or Queen had made sort of offer to Adam. If so, can you post a link? I'm just curious.

As far as Idol was concerned, I had a hard time getting behind Adam purely because of taste.

I'm curious to see who will have staying power. They both needed Idol to get this type of opportunity (contrary to some comments--Adam has been beating the bushes for some time now, hasn't he, without much commercial pop music success?). It'll be interesting to see who's style stays.

27. nellie -
Great article again LP!! I couldn't have said it better!! It's awesome to have a writer who has the same opinion all the way through AI season 8. Adam Adam Adam Adam... the more I listen to him, the more I listen to him... He worths every penny from all the downloads I bought..

To Adam fans: Have you downloads Adam's songs today???

28. Mellisa -
I agree with everyone who was with Kris and voted for him, he won because he had more votes, cased closed. American Idol ended already and all you Adam fans need to really get over yourselves already and move on. Personally, I think Kris was more talented and less scary as well.

29. Misty -
I have been a Kris fan from very early on, and yet I honestly never expected him to win. I think he's very talented and I enjoy listening to him. However, Adam is also talented and he had so much support and publicity it seemed obvious who was going to win. So while I was thrilled that Kris made it to the finale, I had accepted that he would probably finish second. I don't think the voterrs got it wrong though, not everyone enjoys Adam's kind of music. I don't like to listen to Adam. I recognize his talent, but I don't want to hear him sing. That's just who I am. It's very sad that people are turning against Kris for winning, and I feel like Adam wouldn't want that. I hope that both men have successful careers in their genre of music.

All the people that leave comments that they hate Adam and they can't stand him that is fine if you don't like him. But to say Kris Allen will be entertaining for 40 years!!!! Are you on cocaine? If Kris is still singing 5 years from now that will be an amazing feat! Some people are just ignorant. Hey if your religious reasons and homophobic reasons are why you couldn't vote for Adam then admit that. I think deep down inside these people must realize how close minded they are and have to defend their stupid reasons for voting for Kris by making up these stories about how great he is. Kris is not great. Even my 3 year old son tells me "Adam is the good one mama, he's good!" And obviously even American Idol knows it because they have never released the single by the runner up!
I just have one question for Lyndsey. How was it being in the same roon as Adam Lambert? That must have been amazing!

31. MiMi Shteiwi -
Adam is awesome and so is Kris. But he did say that Adam deserves this! ROCK ON KRIS AND ADAM!!

32. Guy W -
Chonnie - you can say all the BS you said in your post all you want - but, that will never make it true.
You will be proved SO wrong by the way that Adam will outperform Kris in every way with his career.
No offense to Kris, who I truly like, and hope will be successful.
But to call Adam a "theatrical bore" with "no vocal chops" - is absolute BS, and not even remotely true. In fact - the opposite is true. He's theatrically thrilling and has killer vocal chops.
It's too bad you can't be fair and admit the truth, but I guess you're just too blinded by gay-hating.

33. Lo -
Correction - favorite DUMB comment from Chonnie (aka: dumbass)

"Adam was a theatrical bore" So stupid and absurd, true dumbass!

34. Zak S -
Hahahahaha. Adam definitely should have won. I WILL buy his album, and I've never bought an Idol's album before. Anyway, if it really was the Christian vote that was his undoing... well, all I can say is that I'm really sick of Christian's getting their way in regards to things like homosexuality. How come they aren't pushing to make divorce illegal? It says quite clearly in the Bible that the "Lord hates divorce". *Rolls eyes*. Anyway, Kris will become a Taylor Hicks type Idol. I doubt he'll ever make it big.

35. jjgeo -
Okay All, enough with the "Adam lost to the 'Christian' vote" -"Adam lost because people hate gays". Enough. He lost purely because he did not have the same mass appeal and the votes. Personally, he was never been my cup of tea (neither was/is Kris) but he lost and will still have a lucrative career wtih lots of offers already pouring in. This was not a conspiracy. The only "conspiracy" was that he was probably set up because of all the unbridled biased by the "judges" and producers. Yes, he is super talented but not everyone in the USA drinks the Adam kool-aid. If you don't like his music, don't listen. If you don't like Kris's music, don't listen. Its going to be okay...the world will keep turning...promise. Now, hug and move on.

36. jjgeo -
Sidenote to my previous post: Not to say some people did not vote based on idiot biases, but, you cannot count out all of those people who just have different taste in music and style. Let them each have their shot and the cards will fall where they are supposed too. (sorry, this has been a debate in my office for a week now....its getting tired)

37. camashe -
#28. orchidsinfall - I downloaded the album plus his duet with Allison.

#36. Zak S - The album's really good. It's the first Idol album/song I've bought also

38. sstarnes -
Lindsey - let me preface this post with the following: You rock and I love your blog - whatever they pay you probably isn't enough! So you're feeling the love, right? I easily agree with 95% of what you post! Having said this, you need to chill on the whole "Adam Lambert got robbed" thing - seriously... He is amazing - loved him - but he is polarizing... It's not that difficult to understand why he didn't get the votes he needed to beat Kris. If Bush can become president, then it's pretty clear that America doesn't always "get it right", correct? When the finals began, I didn't think Kris would make the top 5. But when he did Ain't No Sunshine, I realized he was final's material... he is so much more talented than you give him credit for - go spend an hour on YouTube and watch his performances. I just saw him on Ellen today and he was phenomenal - Heartless was spot on, and even the lame Idol song No Boundaries sounded waaay better than we heard on the finale. This man can sing - period and his arrangements kick azz - if he can write good original material, he will be very successful... If you want to laud Adam, no problem dear - he is one of the best ever and his career will surely bear that out. But Kris is no slouch and has NO reason to feel embarrassed about winning - hope you see that someday when you get over your anger about Adam not winning. Mr. Lambert's gonna be just fine without the title - no doubt about it. But please don't think Kris will flame out a la Taylor Hicks - with all due respect to Hicks, Kris is an order of magnitude more talented - open your eyes doll - the man has a future - he grew week in and out and proved he deserved to be there rather than Danny (I did love Allison tho!). And all the best to Adam as well - a true original! Love you Lindsey - thanks for all of your amazing posts - made the season that much more enjoyable - Kindest regards!

39. Paula -
I have to say...that I am a music fan AND a Christian. I think both artists are amazing but to blame Kris' win on a "Christian conspiracy" is insulting. Would I have been unhappy if Adam won? Absolutely not.

The fact that I was cheering for Kris had nothing to with being anti-semetic or gay bashing. Some of my best friends are gay.

I just liked Kris' voice. I like what he chose to do with the songs that he picked. He's singable, which I love.

I'd listen to both. I 'd probably buy either album, although I have mostly downloaded Kris' stuff via iTunes. However, they are different in their style. Personally, I was thrilled that Kris won. It doesn't take away the fact that I also thought Adam was talented.

I don't think Kris has ANYTHING to be ashamed of. He walked out there and said "this is me, this is what I do" and stayed true to that. And America voted. And decided they liked what saw.

I just hope he continues to be able to DO what it is that he wants to do.

40. Jodi -
Let it go. It is commentary such as this that is tarnishing Kris's moment. The truth is Kris is more talented and America saw that truth. I have in the past enjoyed your blog, but this is the last one I will read...it is tiring reading your droning on about Adam who was more lights, fog, makeup and screaming than he was talent.
