Kris Allen: The Reality Rocks Interview

Posted Mon Jun 22, 2009 11:24am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

There are times when I've actually felt a little bad for Kris Allen. Yes, I know that sounds weird: How could anyone feel sorry for the guy who won on the biggest show on TV? But Kris spent the entire eighth American Idol season being labeled the "dark horse" and having to prove himself to Simon Cowell over and over again. And although he was ultimately (and some would say unexpectedly) the winner of this year's Idol, snagging the majority of the finale's whopping 100 million votes, most of the media attention--from Rolling Stone cover stories to 20/20 interviews to (YES, I freely admit it) this very blog--has still focused on the "frontrunner" that Kris beat out, second-placer Adam Lambert.

Despite Kris's constant humility on Idol, whether auditioning (when he declared, "There's probably better singers than me"), winning (when he reacted, unscriptedly, with "Adam deserves this"), or dealing with post-finale Glambertmania, I've always wondered...doesn't he secretly resent this? Doesn't he ever want to get up in people's faces and shout, "Hey, everybody, newsflash: I WON. Not that other guy. ME." Hasn't he ever come close to having some sort of Jan Brady "Marcia Marcia Marcia"-esque meltdown moment?

Surely someone couldn't be that humble and that nice, right? Right?

Except, dear readers...Kris is that nice. He really, really is.

When I interviewed Kris in his dressing room at the Idols Live Tour rehearsals, I tried my darnedest to get him to admit to a little jealousy, or even just assert that he hands-down deserved to win American Idol. But no dice. That's just not Kris's style.

Instead he praised his fellow contestants, spoke glowingly of the Kradam bond, declared "Adam's a winner too," and even over-modestly claimed he can venture out in public unnoticed. (In fact, when I met him, he introduced himself to me by his first and last name--as if I would not recognize him or something. Ha.) I didn't believe him for a moment regarding that last statement, by the way. Just because he doesn't go out in public wearing attention-getting black nail varnish or platform Kiss boots hardly means he doesn't run the risk of being mobbed by fangirls every time he leaves the house without a bodyguard. Puh-leeze. If his laid-back style was enough to win over much of America, it's enough to cause a commotion if he walks into a 7-11.

So I finally realized that Kris's nice-guy act is in fact NOT an act, and that he is indeed one of the nicest guys on the planet; that took up a decent chunk of part 1 of my interview. But we also discussed how Kris is a great role model for Christians (well, of course KRIS doesn't think he is, but I do, and I told him so); why all the political/cultural debate surrounding American Idol this year shouldn't matter; how he's a "rebel" in his own quiet way; and how (despite his humility) he should be proud to represent a really strong, musically diverse Idol season (in my opinion, the best season yet). Here's how the first part of our chat went:

In part 2, we got down to what always mattered most: The music, man. In this section I admit I got a little fangirly myself discussing Kris's genius decision to cover the Once soundtrack's "Falling Slowly" (one of the most musically credible moments of AI 8, and my favorite performance of his), especially when Kris emotionally spoke about the reaction his version elicited from the song's composers, Glen Hansard (of the Frames) and Marketa Irglova.

We also talked about what his debut album will sound like and, perhaps most excitingly, the big singalong number he will be performing on the Idols Live Tour. When you go to the concert make sure to bring your cellphones, kids (or your Bic lighters, if you're old-school), 'cause you're going to want to whip them out and hold them up, high and illuminated, when Kris gets his big, non-humble, victorious stadium moment:

Happy Birthday Kris! Is he going to have 5 songs on the tour in all including No boundaries?

22. astrogal -
that was dumb to assume that all of Kris' fans are tweens. The world doesn't revolve around Adam, you interviewer person.

Hope things work for Kris..Adam's already passed him?

I personally found his songs and stylings quite varied. To go from singing Apologize with such emotion to singing the disco number She works hard for the money with such exuberamce and convinction is praiseworthy. I have all his songs on my ipod and every song feels refreshingly new on every listen. I am for sure going to love his album!!

Thanks for the interview! I love to see how excited he is about that song he is singing on tour and that he just let us know. Yay! I think is the best song to sing along with him it's gonna be beautiful! Kris is the best, I love him so much and I'm going to fly all the was Mexico City to see him in concert in NJ next august 8th! His voice really touches my heart and soul.

oh and yes, happy birthday Kris!!!

Lyndsey, when did you conduct a survey to see what age range Kris' fans fall into. I'm a 34 year old AA woman, so I obviously haven't been a teen for years, but that hasn't stopped me from loving Kris' music. Just based on what I've seen from across the web, Kris fans come in all races, ages, sexes, and nationalities. But, I guess you would actually have to be unbiased to even consider that.

You don't seem like a professional interviewer. Its like some random fangirl interviewing. Come on he is just being gracious. There are celebrities who do not boast about their talent and rather choose to stay humble. They believe in speaking through actions. Atleast be respectable enough. You did the same with Cook, bombarding him with questions about this season when clearly he wasn't interested. Even I can take such kind of interviews...

But Kris is a class act. Loved his fist reaction!! He is an amazing person.

Happy belated birthday Kris!

Hmm, Kris was being so nice to you Lyndsey. He was too nice to inform you that The Fray's fans more than welcomed him last week, or that The Fray's fans are definitely not teenaged girls. Of course, working for a musical blog, nobody would actually expect you to know about The Fray or who makes up their fanbase. Great way to embarrass yourself.

great interview with Kris. What a sweetie!

my one complaint honestly isn't even about Kris, it's about his fans. like #17. The not so subtle digs against Adam are really really tiresome. No one who goes on Idol wants to be famous "for the wrong reason" since they are there to showcase their TALENT, which means they ALL want that talent to help them become famous, even Kris. oh and saying Kris' music isn't your style or taste isn't bashing. It's an opinion. Just like some people don't like Adam or Allison or whoever.

Kris is going to be very successful and I can't wait to see him on tour along with Adam and Allison. The best F3 (I don't count Danny sorry) every in Idol history!

I love how giddy Kris gets when he talks about music. It's that type of passion that will take him far in the industry. I just adore this kid (also not a tween here!) to pieces and I cannot wait for his album!

33. Yahoo! Music User -
ya know it's no more insulting to Kris to say that the majority os his fans are tweens/teens than it is to say that the majority of Adam's fans are 40 year old cougars.

Get a grip people. It was a good interview. Stop painting Kris as the victim all the time. Ya'll are turning into Claymates. for real.

34. CaitlinP -
silverdream_girl, how do you know that dig was about Adam? What makes you think that Adam is getting attention for the wrong reasons?

35. Yahoo! Music User -
My husband said Kris would be the Idol after Kris’s “Ain’t No Sunshine.” I firmly believe that Kris would be the Idol after “Falling Slowly.” Both are the AMERICAN IDOL MOMENTS for our family. Thanks Kris. Thanks for the interview.

Lyndsey -- great job! I really enjoyed the interview. I'm a Kradam-ite (is that how you say it?) and REALLY appreciate the attention you put on to Kradam in this interview -- I loved how he answered those questions. It did bring to mind, however, that I wish you had asked the Kradam question of Adam -- would have liked to have heard his response on that as well. Looking forward to your continued coverage of all things Idol..!

Peachblossom don't pretend I'm naive. I've seen these types subtle and subversive digs against Adam since before the finale and they've only gotten worse IMO. Things like he's more of a celebrity than a musician, he's in it for the fame not the music, I'm so glad the "right type" of person won, I'm so glad the one whose "all about the music won" Idol, blah blah blah. It just gets OLD.

and your dig wasn't subtle either btw. I don't think Adam gets attention for the wrong reasons. I think Adam gets attention because he's the best singer to come from Idol ever. He's the most charistmatic performer the show has ever had also. His story is interesting, he's engaging and he's humble and sweet to boot.

Kris' fans need to accept that he won... because they are acting like he lost and his career is in trouble. it's very puzzling.

38. Marina -
I am an adult married female and love both Kris and Adam because they are really gifted. However, I did vote for Kris because I like his style and emotional impact. Kara Dioguardi summed it up very nicely when she said that Kris creates a unique bond with the audience and makes each one feel that he is singing to that person alone. Kris moved me to tears with his ANS and I actually looked forward every week to his performances (and Adam's too) but it was Kris who won my votes for the finals.

39. Nancy -
Yes, Kris, please continue focusing on MUSIC! Music stirs human’s (even animals) deepest emotion.
Way to go Kris!
WIN PEOPLE’S HEARTS!
Thank you Lyndsey

Hey how many NEW songs is he singing other than the ones he already did on the show?
