Kris Allen: The Reality Rocks Interview

Posted Mon Jun 22, 2009 11:24am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

There are times when I've actually felt a little bad for Kris Allen. Yes, I know that sounds weird: How could anyone feel sorry for the guy who won on the biggest show on TV? But Kris spent the entire eighth American Idol season being labeled the "dark horse" and having to prove himself to Simon Cowell over and over again. And although he was ultimately (and some would say unexpectedly) the winner of this year's Idol, snagging the majority of the finale's whopping 100 million votes, most of the media attention--from Rolling Stone cover stories to 20/20 interviews to (YES, I freely admit it) this very blog--has still focused on the "frontrunner" that Kris beat out, second-placer Adam Lambert.

Despite Kris's constant humility on Idol, whether auditioning (when he declared, "There's probably better singers than me"), winning (when he reacted, unscriptedly, with "Adam deserves this"), or dealing with post-finale Glambertmania, I've always wondered...doesn't he secretly resent this? Doesn't he ever want to get up in people's faces and shout, "Hey, everybody, newsflash: I WON. Not that other guy. ME." Hasn't he ever come close to having some sort of Jan Brady "Marcia Marcia Marcia"-esque meltdown moment?

Surely someone couldn't be that humble and that nice, right? Right?

Except, dear readers...Kris is that nice. He really, really is.

When I interviewed Kris in his dressing room at the Idols Live Tour rehearsals, I tried my darnedest to get him to admit to a little jealousy, or even just assert that he hands-down deserved to win American Idol. But no dice. That's just not Kris's style.

Instead he praised his fellow contestants, spoke glowingly of the Kradam bond, declared "Adam's a winner too," and even over-modestly claimed he can venture out in public unnoticed. (In fact, when I met him, he introduced himself to me by his first and last name--as if I would not recognize him or something. Ha.) I didn't believe him for a moment regarding that last statement, by the way. Just because he doesn't go out in public wearing attention-getting black nail varnish or platform Kiss boots hardly means he doesn't run the risk of being mobbed by fangirls every time he leaves the house without a bodyguard. Puh-leeze. If his laid-back style was enough to win over much of America, it's enough to cause a commotion if he walks into a 7-11.

So I finally realized that Kris's nice-guy act is in fact NOT an act, and that he is indeed one of the nicest guys on the planet; that took up a decent chunk of part 1 of my interview. But we also discussed how Kris is a great role model for Christians (well, of course KRIS doesn't think he is, but I do, and I told him so); why all the political/cultural debate surrounding American Idol this year shouldn't matter; how he's a "rebel" in his own quiet way; and how (despite his humility) he should be proud to represent a really strong, musically diverse Idol season (in my opinion, the best season yet). Here's how the first part of our chat went:

In part 2, we got down to what always mattered most: The music, man. In this section I admit I got a little fangirly myself discussing Kris's genius decision to cover the Once soundtrack's "Falling Slowly" (one of the most musically credible moments of AI 8, and my favorite performance of his), especially when Kris emotionally spoke about the reaction his version elicited from the song's composers, Glen Hansard (of the Frames) and Marketa Irglova.

We also talked about what his debut album will sound like and, perhaps most excitingly, the big singalong number he will be performing on the Idols Live Tour. When you go to the concert make sure to bring your cellphones, kids (or your Bic lighters, if you're old-school), 'cause you're going to want to whip them out and hold them up, high and illuminated, when Kris gets his big, non-humble, victorious stadium moment:

Lyndsey - The interview was great - just like the other one with Adam. I love both of these guys - they are an example to everyone. I don't think either Kris or Adam would like people to be beating you up like this. Rock on Lyndsey! Can't wait to see the rest.

Hey #74 -- on the contrary, Idol did know that Adam was going to set the record straight about his sexuality which is why they let him do the Rolling Stones interview.

And that is also why his mother said that they signed a confidentiality agreement with Idol preventing them from saying anything about Adam's sexuality until after the show was over.

Thanks for the interview. I love him!!!

Lindsey, you shouldn't have to explain yourself to idiots who can't get past their inexplicable bitterness towards Adam to just enjoy their guy's success. Not a Kris fan here but I enjoyed the interview, he's a nice guy and comes across as such. Not a Kradam fan either, but I appreciate their friendship and regard for each other. Your questions were insightful and I really enjoyed the easy semi-formality and the untethered, loose approach you had. Can't wait for Allison's interview!

I thought that this was a great interview, and for anyone who has ever watched any interview with Kris, he talks about Adam enough on his own that blaming an interviewer for talking about Adam is ridiculous.
Also, I would like to say that the mentioning of Kradam and Kris's "We are Kradam" quote mayyyy have influenced my love of this interview all the more. Still though, putting my love of both Kris and Adam aside for a moment, there was plenty of music talk about just Kris to satisfy any Kris fan. All this drama really is becoming very petty. It's an interview people.

Wow both these guys have really passionate fans. I say rock on and protect, defend and love your guy. Both of them! American Idol rules.

Lyndsey can handle the heat she's blogger for goodness sake. And she makes her living stating her opinion on the internet so I'm pretty sure hearing other peoples thoughts on the subject (be it pro or con) are not going to rattle her. Right Lyndsey?!

Best interview so far is still the Idolatry interview with EW's Slezak. You can tell he was comfortablel there, and they spend a lot of time discussing bout his performances throughout the season, the finalists, his plans etc.

THIS interview had - an attempting-to-be-professional Adam fan trying to rile up Kris, how he SUPPOSEDLY won Idol, for reasons unknown thinks humility is baaadd and question him repeatedly bout it, talking bout Adam/Kradam (a lot) and being a Christian role model etc. All 7 minutes plus into the first interview and you has not asked a SINGLE question about music or mention any of his performances which you know, could be among the reasons why he won idol. For Pete's sake, it's already a month after the finale, surely there are other angles you can explore from aa an avid follower compared to the stale old questions asked by none-the-wiser newspapers.

Little wonder then that you left a disclaimer that the second video clip will be more about the music. The only thing worth watching if you're a Kris fan who's mostly seen every interview out there is midway through the second clip when Kris revealed his song choice. Besides that there is not much to be known.

#82 well perhaps you need to call the actual person who interviewed Adam because according to her, she had no idea he was going to come out officially to her in the interview.

I agree. Kris has a lot of male fans Lindsay. You should be less ignorant to say such a thing.

I can't wait to see him on tour. And also Happy Birthday Kris!!!!

I am surprised that he's not playing Falling Slowly. That is one of his most popular performances. Maybe they were not able to clear it? I mean, if it wasn't for him, it would not be as popular as it is now.

Great interview! Thanks! Kris is so sweet, talented and humble and he'll definitely go far! I wish him nothing but success

funny what she said about Adam and Kris being heartthrobs and having many female fans even though both of them were off limits.

thanks for another great interview Lindsay. i don't know why you tweeted you were getting bashed about it. the Kradam thing is just as important as was talking to Kris about his music and himself. please hurry with the other interviews of the rest of the top 10. you rock Lindsay, you fangirl.

actually i just noticed kris brought up the teen subject before lyndsey did - when he talks about doing the "once" song. he says he wasn't sure he should do it because "not too many teenagers watch indie films". i think he was aware that some of his fans were young. so it was not out of line for the interviewer to bring this up later when she asked about the tween fan base.

Used to think the author is too biased towards Adam. I think she redeemed herself with this interview. I love Kris Allen!!!!

Boring!!!! Kris is a boring interview, mumbles and stumbles around. Boring!!!! His interviews are as bland as his music. He sounds the same on every song and has no vocal range.

Kris,I wish you only the best. You rocked all the way. Good luck on the tour and hope you have a great career. You deserved the win.
